The Phillipou brothers are the best thing to happen to horror in a while. Talk To Me was a heap of fun, and Bring Her Back went right into my short list of incredible movies I loved but will never watch again. Gees that got to me.

To think these guys were the buffoons on YouTube who did those ridiculous Ronald McDonald videos

Recent movies I've watched

*Signs: A movie I've not watched to completion till recently. M Night sure knows how to build tension. Mel gives a good performance. A good, entertaining watch. 3 out of 5.

*Strays: An okay movie....it never fully grabbed me but there were some funny points in the movie. 3 out of 5.

*U-571: Fantastic film. The submarine genre is not one I usually seek. In saying that, I've seen two other fantastic ones (Crimson Tide and The Hunt for Red October) and a good one (Hunter Killer with Gerard Butler). A really enjoyable film with a solid cast and a great leading man in McConaughey. 4 out of 5.

*The Hunted: This movie had a lot of good ingredients yet failed to really hit the mark. Del Toro and Tommy Lee Jones in a Friedkin film with a First Blood-like storyline. It was okay but should have been better. 2.5 out of 5.

*Wrong Turn (reboot): Definitely a bad movie but entertaining type of film. I'm giving it a higher rating than I probably should, but I liked it. I've not seen any other wrong turn movie before.....ones I'll check out. 3 out of 5.

*The Comeback Trail: De Niro, Jones, Freeman. All three gave their all but the movie seemed rather bland in parts. 2.5 out of 5.

*Peppermint: It started promising but never really took off for me. Garner has done a lot better. 2 out of 5.

*The Last House on the Left (1972): For all the hype this movie got with this being Wes Craven's first film, it is an absolute pile of crap movie. The way it is filmed and acted, it is almost done in a 70s porn style way with the wooden acting and crap cinematography. Im a Wes Craven fan but this film shows NONE of the talent he would display in future productions. My first zero rating of 2026. 0 out of 5.

*Lake Mungo: My f**k, what a surprise this one was. The best movies are ones that make you feel something. The atmosphere of this movie is so f**king eerie. Total proof that a movie made with a 50c budget can be an absolute gem. Best movie I've seen in 2026. 5 out of 5.

The original Wrong Turn movies are great, well as far as dumb horror movies go

Some movies I've watched over my break. Back to work this week so I'll be watching a lot less sadly.

Speed: My mates are often in amazement of what movies I've seen and what I haven't seen. I have not seen "Speed" until tonight. I've even seen "Speed 2" and turned it off for being crap. A movie which is so typically 90s in its action. One of the stunts with the bus actually made my jaw drop. The pacing of the film was superb, yet there was some character development at the same time. Bullock and Hopper were superb while Keanu certainly has a super likeability about him. I'm not sure why it took me so long to watch it....but a great film. I watched it on a 4K disc as well....great fun. 4 out of 5.

Martial Law: I am a martial arts fan and loved this type of movie as a kid but am a lot more selective about them as an adult. This one had David Carradine, Chad McQueen (Steve's son and Dutch in The Karate Kid) and dynamic (but annoying at times) martial artist in Cynthia Rothrock. Even as a fan of the genre, I found this one so dull. Carradine scenes and Rothrock kicking ass save it from a 0. 1 out of 5.

Howard the Duck: Perhaps the most infamous dud from the 80s. I was surprised (but probably shouldn't have been based on his later directing efforts) to learn that George Lucas directed this film. Make no mistake, the movie is shit. I can't help but think Lucas for some reason wanted to give this movie a bad movie type feel to it. When a movie tries to do this on purpose, it rarely turns to be the way they intended. What elevates this movie from a 1 is the pure amount of "WTF" moments in the film. It is not laugh out loud "WTF" moments....it is more out of pure confusion with the craziness of it all. 1.5 out of 5.

Vertical Limit: I was hoping for "Cliffhanger" type fun but didn't get it. It was an okay watch. 2 out of 5.

Eraser: A movie I saw a part of as a teen but only remembered an early action scene. Pretty good film with a great airplane sequence. Caan was great while the other actors did their jobs without being particularly memorable, A decent action flick. 3 out of 5.

The only reason I saw this was cos it came as part of the package with my PS2 (along with Black Hawk Down) back circa 2003 when I had an insatiable need to finally play the GTA games in my own time instead of sporadic rentals.

Movie was very unmemorable. Vice City was great though!

Yep, it even went for the Cliffhanger-like intro with nowhere near the same effect. Even Scott Glenn could not raise the film to great heights....pun intended

I was trying to remember how I knew of this movie, then I clicked it was filmed in NZ and Temuera Morrison played an Indian or Pakistani pilot. Directed by NZer Martin Campbell who made the two best modern Bond's in Goldeneye and Casino Royale.

Yep.....Temuera did not even try to put on a Pakistani accent......much like Sean Connery in Hunt for Red October...lol. I'd say it is for the best....lol.

Yeah, if you want an accent for your random ethnic dude you get Cliff Curtis, if you don't care then Tem is good to go.

Both actors are highly entertaining. No actors can seem to nail an Australian accent. A bunch of English actors can nail an American one though. I had no idea for a fair chunk for Gerard Butler's career that he was English.

I'm slightly worried about your hearing now 😉 , Butler's US accent is terrible, and he's not English, he's Scottish.

Oz and NZ accents are pretty hard to do.

I think most actors from the English speaking world can do a passable US one due to so much of their stuff being distributed. I think Idris Elba was the biggest one that surprised me after seeing him in The Wire, I just assumed he was from Baltimore. But the guy who played McNulty you could tell was English.

Haha, I thought it was the same one movie. I've not seen any of the series.

I think the best non-NZ actor somewhat pulling off a NZ accent was Anthony Hopkins in the World's Fastest Indian.

There were some moments of "that wasn't quite right" (maybe fell back to his own Welsh background) but in general he pulled off the old school Kiwi "she'll be right" manner, of course playing a guy that grew up in the 20s/30s so accents were still a bit Ye Olde English/Irish/Welsh/Scottish depending on where their parents emigrated from!

As for Temuera, not sure I've ever seen a movie outside of Once Were Warriors/Broken-Hearted where he doesn't just play plain old Temuera 😅
Whenever I seem him in something, I will always be reminded of Speed 2 where an anchor speeds past hitting his character on the arm and he just non-chalantly says "oh my arm is broken" or something like that, cracked me up in the theatre and still lovingly think back to that ridiculous moment hah!

I thought that Hopkins was doing a Cornish-Kiwi accent (that there's still remnants off these days with the Southland rolled R), but it didn't really scream NZ accent when I watched the film. Somewhat weirdly I've been getting Youtube shorts of scenes from that movie recently.

On the flipside of Kiwis trying other accents, I just couldn't handle Jemaine Clement doing a token American accent in the latest Avatar (maybe also the second one but tmy memories of those movies are almost immediately flushed when I leave the cinema so can't recall if he was in that one as well!).

Why would you cast him if you're just gonna take away one of the things people love him for - that flat slightly nasal Kiwi drone! He did a much better British-ish accent as Boris in MIB3, but American just doesn't suit him.

I might give it a watch. 28 Years Later felt like those exercises in school where one kid writes the first half of a story, then another kid has to finish it. Weird movie.

Yeah, I wasn't a fan of that one.

Even less so after watching this.
