So they just looked at the parramatta region? why?
I think there’s about 700k playing sport in wa. If putting a team here got 1% of them playing rugby league I think we’d be pretty happy!
most of the western Sydney nrl clubs have been around for 50-100 years. How’s their crowds and memberships in comparison with that big head start? Good beat up article to make the RL Sydney folk feel warm and fuzzy though lol.
Ps why is league only half of soccer despite all them professional clubs?, now that’s embarrasing!

GWS was always going to be an expensive long term investment, and it's not really that surprising that they are struggling the way they are. Furthermore, I imagine that the Swans had similar statistics in the late 80s and early 90s, and look at them now.

Besides who exactly is advocating for 'afl style expansion' akin to GWS?

I can't think of anybody that is seriously suggesting that the NRL attempt an expensive long term project similar to GWS except, arguably, those calling for PNG to get a team. Even then those people don't expect the NRL to underwrite the costs of a PNG club.

Afl expansion has been a huge failure but the afl are too arrogant to admit this and will just keep throwing money at it

the super league was was a gift for the afl which made the swans what they are today. The lions showed similar growth then fell back

in nsw and qld their tv ratings have collapsed from the high they used to get. So for a majority of australia nobody is watching it on tv

and the article says they have spent 200 million on western Sydney and they rank last in terms of participation

unlike afl rugby league is a sport for all demographics. Their failure to make inroads into the Polynesian and migrant communities in Sydney means they are always going to struggle

as the arlc adds more teams to Brisbane the lions are going to need more support to stay relevant

rather than trying to capture a nieche part of nsw and qld which they could afford to sustain they bet the bank on trying to take over, just like union did, and they are going to get crushed

the article also says once Sydney gets new suburban grounds and with no draft league will be even more enticing for juniors

the arlc still has Perth Ipswich and nz2 to add and that will put them in a position to put afl in the rear vision mirror forever

it all really depends on how long vlandys stays in power to how league is positioned. He certainly sees the game in growth mode now

the article literally quotes ex swans chairman colless who says the new stadium policy in Sydney is going to see afl crushed

you can see why they’ve got rid of gill when he’s still saying the giants are a success and having no policy to make them work

The other thing you have to look at with AFL expansion model; vs what the NRL/ARLC should do, is that the AFL dropped a brand new franchise in an area with a growing population in a state that doesn't have a huge support for that game and already has one team in metro Sydney in the Swans. The other franchise; the GC Suns, were plopped into a tourist trap with a mostly transient population and no huge business industry there for backing (Unlike Sydney, Melb or Brisbane) in another state that already has a team and most of the demographic there support Rugby League.

What Rugby League should do is invest in at least one team in WA; which has no representation in the NRL, and capitalise on the growing RL presence there. You would be pulling in those that aren't aligned with AFL and want something bigger that the Western Force; as well as a lot of the mining and FIFO expats over there from the Eastern states who already support an NRL team and would love to see some NRL over that way.

The Storm, despite being in AFL heartland, has capitalised on Melb's love for sport in general. Yes, success of the team has helped immensely; but the NRL gave the people of Melb, especially the non-AFL supporters, something they never had.... an NRL team to follow.... as opposed to the AFL going for "more of the same" in the Rugby League heartlands that already have an AFL team in that metro area.

If I had been the AFL I would have jumped on Tasmania ages ago before brining in either GWS, or more likely the GC Suns. At least they have been screaming for a team for ages. Capitalise on the market that has no representation before jumping into enemy territory where interest is low. I think housing GWS in Blacktown was a rookie error too. They should probably make a permanent move to Canberra.

I think moving from Blacktown was what killed them

had they stayed there with a council backing them they would be a true greater western Sydney team

but the players hated being in western Sydney so they moved it to homebush where the swans already count as their territory and where most of the players live close by

it’s a no brainer they move to Canberra full time

Stupid thread. Nobody asked for GWS. There was no momentum for that club at all. It was a direct attack on our strongest region and it’s failed. The Perth bid is business and government supported. It’s goal is to place a team where there is the administration and structure to support it. And Perth sports followers have clearly demonstrated their support for a team by their attendance at games. Go Perth!

no it ranks last in Parramatta area where the survey was done. If that is representative we dont know. How many is 1%, it might be a significant number of kids for all we know. Also interesting they did no growth analysis, so has the number of local afl clubs and registered players grown since the Giants introduction? Thats why its a beat up article, they've taken one region, not looked at growth and havent considered other metrics like fans and members, merch sales, corporate backing etc of Giants. Now it might be all those things also back up that its been a failure, but we dont know.
Still if the chest beating makes RL fans feel better go for it lol Meanwhile we are STILL trying to get a second actual expansion club into the NRL after 100 years.

Its Pippen, he likes to post troll threads. Belongs in fight club section but sadly we have no moderators in here.

You should talk to Richard colless and try and convince him

the fact afl ranks last after 200 million being spent would be considered a failure by most rational human beings

only an afl fanatic would try and spin this

Whats your thoughts on RL only being half as popular as soccer despite the billions spent in the region? If soccer can do that with just the WSW then we obviously dont need 5 Western sydney NRL clubs.

Soccer mums. Lots of kids actually get scared of tackling and being hit hard as they get older and it becomes more contact

dean young was a huge soccer junior star

ended up in league

soccer juniors literally have nowhere to go unless they go to England

a league is a joke

soccer has always been a massive participation sport even before a league

Have we wasted billions then trying to get kids to play RL when it has failed so badly compared to soccer participation? that seems to be the argument against AFL.
