This is a great point.
Football (soccer) is so big, in terms of kids participation rates. It is by far the most popular sport for kids to play in this country.
It's staggering that this has not transcended into following the game at the highest level in Australia.

It is pretty simple. There are a number of better competitions overseas. The same would happen to the NRL under the same circumstances.

Melbourne has a population of 4.8 people. Yet ave 18k to games (0.3% of the population) So gone?

Gold Coast has a population of 620k. Yet only ave 15k to games (2.5% of the population) ... so you are right they should be booted out

Brisbane 2.4m population. Yet draw 29k (1.5% of the population) to games...I guess we kick them out too?

North Queensland - Well Cairns and Townsville had populations of 336k combined
Yet Cows draw 17,210 ( Also just over 5% of the population) should they go too?
The difference with those teams is they represent enough people to be worthwhile to sponsors.

Why do you think 13 or more Toyota car dealerships across NQ have sponsored the Cowboys since 2003?

Why do you think Village Roadshow sponsors the Titans?

Why do you think the Broncos are the richest RL club in the world?

If you sponsor Cronulla you're appealing to 220k people at most as that's all the Sutherland Shire has living in it. They don't appeal to anyone outside of Sutherland. On top of that, you're competing with eight other clubs within the Sydney metropolitan market for television coverage. It's a poor deal for the sponsors, hence the reason they got just $4m in 2021 and $2.7m in 2020.

Cowboys got $8.9m in a season they finished second last after finishing third last the previous season.

The numbers don't lie mate, no matter how you try to manipulate them.

He shouldn’t argue by those means but Brisbane, Melbourne and North Queensland earn a fair degree more than the Sharks and are much more commercially important to the competition. That’s a pretty inarguable point.

By the way I’m not advocating the removal of any side - the competition has moved past this. Nevertheless, it is important to add context

Because he is an idiot. I added to Melbourne numbers to show even more how dumb he is
The only idiots are you and your mate for not understanding what sponsors want and what a professional sports team needs. Your stupid argument would have a point if the Broncos, Cowboys, Storm and Titans were basket cases off the field like the Sharks.

Melbourne is one of the richest clubs in the NRL, despite only having a niche following in Melbourne. You're too stupid to understand why.

The only way a team like Cronulla can be successful is appealing to at least 10% of its market as the population of its catchment is small.

@Iamback proved he doesn't have a leg to stand on when he added the population of Cairns to Townsville to fudge the numbers his way. Cowboys are based in Townsville. Cairns is 347km away. That's a drive of 4 and a half hours. Only an idiot would think it's comparable to the small distance people within Sutherland have to travel to get to Shark Park.

Townsville has about 180k people. So using @Iamback's calculations, that means just under 10% of the market is supporting the team.

Nobody gets paid on %'s lol. There are some clubs that are underperforming in fanbase engagement and corporate support growth, if they can get better or not is the key point I guess. NRL has kept upping the grant significantly (more than doubling it in a few years), geez you'd hope the clubs would be at least break even by now!

I am not either, All Sydney teams are expanding outside of their local borders and have outside of football income.

Merely pointing out how stupid looking at % of Population at games are as a metric

Hahha it’s embarrassing

the fact you can’t realise this is the point being made here

oh and sharks have the second highest junior numbers in Sydney fyi
You're not making a point. You said "local car dealership". That means you thought it was just one dealership from Townsville. It's 13 car dealerships from across NQ because the Cowboys appeal to people all over Cape York to Mt Isa and Mackay.

Cronulla only appeals to Sutherland because Sydney is over saturated and the club refuses to extend its reach to new regions.

Best tell your club to remove Mackay and Northern Pride off the website then?

The Cowboys and its three feeder clubs are partners in a long-term strategy that provides a clear pathway to the National Rugby League for juniors from the region.

Northern Pride

Representing Far North Queensland, the Northern Pride were founded in 2007 and played their first Queensland Cup season in 2008.

Home ground: Barlow Park, Cairns

CEO: Paul Callaghan

Coach: Ty Williams

Well if its Cowboys territory then would be silly to base a PNG club there wouldn't it? lol

Cronulla have no where to expand as they're boxed into Sutherland by the Dragons.

🤦‍♂️

Try looking at a map.

You still don't get it. When your market is limited to one LGA on the outskirts of Sydney with just 220k people then you need more than 5% of it to actitively support your club. Especially when the Sydney market is so over saturated there is no room for the club to grow elsewhere. That's the drawback of over saturation and why the Bradley Report called for rationalisation.

Melbourne and Brisbane can get away with having a lower percentage of people from their market following them because their total size is more than 20 and 10 times bigger respectively.

Stick to telling us that all the numbers released by the media on the broadcast deals are wrong. It's quite entertaining watching a delusional moron at work.

Another stupid post from @Iamback.

Cowboys cover all of NQ from Cape York to Mt Isa and Mackay, but it's obviously difficult for everyone across such a vast area to travel to games on a regular basis. Active support in the form of game day attendance is primarily drawn from a 20 to 30km radius of the team's stadium. From a commercial perspective and non-ticketed membership perspective the entire NQ region can support the Cowboys, which they do enthusiastically. From a game day perspective the bulk of fans are from the Townsville region.

Its what they pay. not what they sell that matters most.
(2021)
Cowboys $9mill sponsorship, Dolphins $10mill (2023), Broncos $13mill
Sharks $4mill, Panthers $6mill, Bulldogs $3.6mill

Its hard to argue that Sydney clubs arent struggling a bit in this space
