What would be the perfect NRL season if we started again with no power struggles from the TV networks or club revenues.

Mine would be as follows,

Pre Season
Auckland 9's
All Stars

Season
18 Teams, Perth & Central Qld new teams
17 Rounds, play each team only once
State of Origin played on Wednesday and a Pacific knockout comp held the following weekends of Origin. NSW Cup & Qld Cup have a bye these rounds as many will be playing in this.
World Club Championship a week after the Grand Final
Test Matches

NRL:
12 teams
22 round (play each team home and away)
3 bye weeks for State of Origin
1 bye week for international window

Below this, 2 divisions of 14 teams with promotion and relegation between the 3 leagues.

Entry to 3rd level league done by application with team having to play in equivalent State competition

4 weeks of 9s circuit;
(1 week break)
17 weeks for comp, with 18 teams playing each other once;
4 stand alone weeks in season for Rep matches;
4 weeks for Finals.

30 weeks from start to finish, just like now.

Sounds like a good basis, makes allowance that Nines will rival Origin and a couple of extra teams can't be denied much longer.

Playing each other once will mean every second year turnaround or agreement

The key is to convince the media that there is more money to be made satisfying everyone, advancing the game in the South Pacific, and logical steps to a prosperous season

3 conferences of ten teams, 2 Australasian/pacific and one European.

Play your conf home and away and selection of 3 teams from other conferences 24 game season. Make each season different getting to play new clubs and keeps rivalries/derbies for crowds

Combine NRL and SL into one comp with shared TV money to really develop the game across 4 countries

World club nines in feb

Proper test calendar Oct/nov for every test nation

Expansion to 20 teams. Play every team once and your three biggest rivals a second time for a 22 round season. Retain a Top 8.

The 10 matches for each round would be structured as follows:
- Friday 6:45pm + 8:30pm
- Saturday 3pm, 5pm, 7pm, 9pm (Perth's special timeslot)
- Sunday 1pm (NZ team), 3pm, 5pm, 7pm

Stand alone SOO on Sunday nights with matches separated by only two weeks, not the current three.

Award the premiership to the Roosters in the first week of March and save all the headaches.

18 teams playing each other twice with no pre season. Have a stand-alone origin series played over two weeks played on Wednesday, Saturday and the following Wednesday. That gives the players a couple of weeks mid year to recuperate. Origin players must take games off (depending how many they played) post series. If the players think it's too long a series, f**k 'em. The off season is far too long as it is.

Standalone SOO weekends with a Nines roadshow including Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne Saturday daytimes (if preseason option 1 is used), NZ vs PNG vs Pacific Islands tri series on Saturday nights followed by the main game Sunday nights

First year you have 18 teams playing once. Then go to Origin which becomes an end of season best of 7 bonanza.
Second year you reverse the home and away. Then go to cumulative finals. Top 8 with home and away prelims, a best of 3 grand final hitting Melbourne, Brisbane and finally Sydney.
