I'm all savoury when it comes to cooking. Doesn't mean I don't like the desserts, only good at eating them though, not making them. My grandmas jam roly poly or biscuits are a real throwback. The smell and taste would take me straight back to a wonderful place.

I haven't got a big sweet tooth but i really love a good trifle but it has to have the jelly, if it doesn't have jelly its not a trifle to me. Do like a jam roly poly but couldn't tell you the last time i had one, that does take me back many years. Yes like you i'm good at eating deserts, not making them.

The other thing i miss is my mothers fruit cakes, every time our school had a fete, she would make a dozen or so but always the first one would be for us, they were always the first to sell out at the cake stall and a few times people would put in an order so they didn't miss out, don't know what it was but those fruit cakes were amazing, i so miss them now.

Agree on the jelly.

As kids we never considered the effort that went into having fresh biscuits ready for when we arrived. It was special and there was range to choose from. Everyone's favourites. I reflect on this as an adult, I did not at at the time. As a parent I know that thanks does not matter and was never the point - still makes me nostalgic and reflect on the practical act of love in baking because we were coming over.

My better half has tried to emulate my mothers lemon poppy seed cake and even though it comes out good it is no where close to my mothers, we were spoiled for so many years when my mother was happy to bake just about anything we asked for, sadly those days are gone even though my mother is still alive she is unable to do just about anything now so i look back on those time fondly.

I havent tried doing that yet. I assumed it would be average at best. Any tips for giving it a run?

I was put onto this by an colleague. I wasn't interested - air fried steak just did not sound interesting. My health conscious daughter bought an air fryer.

I was sceptical. But I put a fresh piece of rump in - nice and thick, I sliced it to fit the air fryer pan. (It was one of those door stopper pieces of rump)

200 degress, 4 mins per side. Perfection. Very rare, very tender, very tasty. It is not like a BBQ'd or grilled steak - no char. But so tender. Have you ever had american prime rib? This is what it is like. And prime rib is great.

If you don't want it rare then I'd go 6 mins per side. Beauty of these things is you can underdo it, easily check and extend the cook time.

I'm doing one for dinner. Best steak sandwich I could make.

All I do is light season with salt and pepper prior to cooking. No oil or anything like that.

I'll give it a try. I've only really used the air fryer for fried chicken, which it excels at. I haven't even been tempted for a kfc run since trying it. I dont know if the lack of char will hurt the steak, but if it's tender and medium rare then it should still be good.

I get 2 medium sized chickens & cut them into kfc style pieces, then get a 600ml carton of butter milk and mix it with an egg and about 150mls of Franks hot sauce. Chuck it all in a big ziplock bag and leave it for 24 hours in the fridge.

Then coat it in seasoned flour and in the air fryer at 180 c for 23 minutes. Flip the pieces over half way through

I only cook it as I'm ready to eat it. The excess floured chicken I vacuum bag and freeze then defrost and cook later. Freezing it doesnt hurt it all.

The flour mix I use is

2 cups plain flour
2 tsp table salt
1 1/2 tsp dried thyme
1 1/2 tsp dried basil
4 Tbsp paprika
1 tsp dried oregano
1 Tbsp celery salt
2 Tbsp garlic salt
1 Tbsp black pepper
1 Tbsp dry mustard powder
3 Tbsp white pepper
1 Tbsp ground ginger
2 Tbsp cayene pepper

I like the chilli hit, but for more authentic kfc original style just delete the cayene pepper. When I made the flour mix I multiplied the quantities x 4 and have it on hand ready to go. It also goes really well on pork as a schnitty. I havent tried it yet, but next time I do it I'm going to use 1 cup of flour and 1 cup of cornflake crumbs for a bit of extra crunch.

After coating the chicken I put it back in the fridge for about an hour to let the mix stick properly, the a light spray with oil before going in the air fryer.

Unfortunately KFC just doesn't live up to fried chicken expectation most of the time. Where i live is so close to a KFC that i have it every now and then and it is so variable, some times its pretty much ok and other times i think mehhhh.
Locally overall for my fried chicken fix i go to Clems in Newtown, their fried chicken pieces are pretty good and definitely the best in the local area, the best i have had over the last 5 years is from Chicko's in Wollongong opposite Win Stadium, not that i get there often but the times i have had it it has been very good.

When i'm driving back from up the coast from Grassy Head or Port Macquarie i usually call in at Henny Penny at East Maitland, the break there gives me a rest before the 2hr drive back to Sydney and i get a bit of a fried chicken fix that i can't get in Sydney, there were a few times where it was just ok and i started thinking is this worth the spot for the break before the hideous run back on the M1 but last November coming back the chicken was so good and back to what it was that made want to stop there on the return trips.

You are right on KFC being hit and miss. When it's good though it is a nice guilty pleasure. The best KFC I've had is in China. They do New Orleans wings, they are sensational. I found a New Orleans chicken marinade mix in an Asian grocery store last week. The pic on the bag looks exactly like the wings in Chinese KFC. I havent tried it yet, but will give it a run one day this week. Hopefully it's on the money. They also do a prawn burger, the pattie is very similar to the Sea Shanty things that used to be available in the frozen section at most supermarkets up until a few years ago. They are also delicious.

Yeah. I think they went about 5 or 6 years ago. I looked for them a few months ago and couldn't find them. I had a look online and from what I could find they went the way of Kraft braised steak and onions.

I hate when they discontinue lines that people like.
Continental used to make a packet cheese and leek soup which i and lots of people used to use to make a very tasty potato bake, it disappeared a few years ago to.

Yorkshire pudding mix disappeared from shelves in the last 12 months. Bastards.
I'm pretty sure they still have it in the soap dodger section at Woolworths. I'm not a big fan of it, but know I've seen it there. Could be a while ago though, I'll have a look next time I'm there.
