Having grown up on Bands like;

Venom,Slayer,Morbid Angel,Carcass,Cannibal Corpse,Deicide,COF,Bolt Thrower,Kreator,Sodom,Dark Throne,Bathory \0/,Empaled Nazarene,Dark Funeral etc etc - what bands are hot today?

Got married and had kids 7-8 year ago and mellowed out a bit, but am looking to expand my CD collection with new stuff.

Cheers

I would recommend the following:

Nile (death)
Immolation (death)
Borknagar (black)
Opeth (progressive death)
Amorphis (melodic death)
November's Doom (doom/death)
Amon Amarth (death)

Geez, there are heaps of bands out there, Farmakon are good too. If I took my time I could name over a hundred.

I stand by the fact that BM has never been as good as when the Norwegian scene brought us Immortal, Emperor and Darkthrone but there are plenty of good modern death bands out there. Start with some of the above.

Cheers Devy, Agree with you on the Norway Scene.

I must make mention of Mayhem, "Live in Leipzig" the only full album with Dead on Vocals.

Listen to his vocals on "Freezing Moon" or "Funeral Fog", absolute Killer!

It's an apt name, Dead, given his current state.

Mayhem were never my favourite band I must admit. I love Immortal though.

I'm currently listening to "masters of war" by Amon Amarth, which is pretty good.
Any recommended tracks to listen to?

Black and Death Metal has fallen in a heap.

I picked up the latest Akercocke album as it was getting great reviews and it's pretty awful. The clean vocals are unlistenable. He simply can't sing. I could do a better job. The reviews said it was very different and original. It isn't. Adding a few sound effects here and there doesn't make you original.

If you want straight ahead death, then KATAKLYSM are pretty good if not amazing.

I'd recommend HOLLENTHON, SIGH, FUNERAL ORATION (not the punk/hardcore band), DECEASED and I don't know what else.

The swedish death metal scene is utter crap. It's destroying death metal.

And buy the new RAGE album when it comes out in March. It's not death, but it's brilliant speed/power/thrash/heavy metal. Buy all of their albums. Best metal band on the planet.

Well Akercocke aren't death or black. More a hybrid. They identify themselves as Satanic metal.

Kataklysm are quite good. Serenity In Fire is a solid album.

But Immolation, Amon Amarth, Opeth and November's Doom all kick arse. Dark Tranquility too.

A few faves from recent years:

Anaal Nathrakh (brutal industrial-tinged black from the UK)
Frost (Anaal Nathrakh offshoot, old-school black)
Ackercoke (although haven't heard their newest, hope it's better than the above report)
Primordial (blackish metal from Ireland but not really part of any normal genre)
Xasthur (low-fi obscure BM from ther US)
Blut Aus Nord (seriously twisted BM from France)

I agree, black metal sure isn't what it used to be. All of the great bands have either changed their style or disbanded.

The new Nokturnal Mortum album is quite good, it's not really black metal though, they've gone down the "forest dewlling pagan" route. They're not Nazis anymore by the looks of things either.

Anorexia Nervosa is a great symphonic black/death band. They put the likes of Cradle Of Filth to shame.

I downloaded some of the new Dark Funeral recently, it's solid if not spectacular. 5 years ago I would have bust a gut over it. These days I guess I just don't care anymore.

Kataklysm remains one of my favourite bands. They're definitely my favourite "still active" band. I'm quite looking foward to their new album, which I hope to pick up in Canada when I'm there next month.

I've never understood what the fuss about Akercocke is about. They've always sounded generic to me. I know that Terrorizer raves about them, but that's to be expected as they rave about all British bands (Primary Slave, anyone?).

Naglfar is one of the better Swedish black/death bands. Melodic but still intense. Their best album is from a few years ago, "Diabolical".

The last Setherial album was worthy as well. They finally learned how to write songs instead of just blasting for 5 minutes at a time. Hopefully they'll have something new out soon.

I've mainly been listening to industrial lately, Hocico in particular. I'm a poseur :)

Ahh yes I forgot about Blut Aus Nord. I downloaded The Work Which Transforms God a few weeks ago. Quite impressive.

Anyway, my playlist at work today will be:

Emperor - In The Nightside Eclipse
Darkthrone - Under a Funeral Moon
Nile - In Their Darkened Shrines
Immolation - Harnessing Ruin
Strapping Young Lad - Alien
Farmakon - A Warm Glimpse

I have a couple of the albums, Vobiscum Satanis and another?

Very good band IMO.

True, I personally have been listening to Black Metal Since Venoms "Welcome to hell" or Bathory's "Bathory".

The music has changed considerably, but still has that underlying tone/message.

Bathory - I still think A Fine Day to Die is one of the greatest of all metal tracks.

I haven't been around as long as you. I began listening to hard rock in the early 90s - Van Halen, ACDC etc - then gradually progressed into heavier stuff I guess about six or seven years ago.

A few people on here have said that they don't get it, but it's their loss. To me, nothing offers what metal does.

Too right Devy!

And "A fine day to die" is One of if not the best Metal songs ever!, also Blood fire death is an excellent album.
If not for Bathory Black Metal may have died after Venom?, I know Dark Throne/Mayhem contribute them as their main inspiration.

Also thanks for putting onto Amon Amarth, "the last with Pagan blood" is Bloody Awesome!
