When did you know that your team would win the big one?

When we signed Luke, RTS, Robson, Sao, Ayshford, Wells, Lauititi, Gavet and Nicoll-Klodstad :sarcasm:

Forget RTS, Luke and even Johnson. Ayshford will lead the Warriors to glory in 2016, thus confirming his immortality. He's less than a god but more than a man.

1991 - Penrith were the best team all season and didn't really have much competition outside of the Raiders i knew we would beat Manly and Norths because they weren't quite good enough to win the competition.
I think the Bears deserved to make the big one that year, but it seems the major semi took it out of them, because they didn't even trouble the Raiders in the prelim, having lost the major on goal kicking.

The Raiders had come from the bottom half of the finals, and were perhaps fortunate to have got there, given their salary cap misdemeanours. They did not enter the top 5 for the first time until the second last round.

In 2002 when Villasanti launched his flying headbutt into Freddy, and Freddy didnt get taken off. I knew that would fire up the players, especially Adrian Morley. Morley went on to absolutely smash Villasanti three times in retaliation, and the points started to flow after that.

Wasn't until the Nathan Fien try in the 70th minute that I was absolutely sure it was wrapped up. Even at 26-8 in the 68th minute I didn't think we had it.

Soward back nice and deep like the week before, obvious to everyone in the ground they are gonna hit the field goal, Fien dummies and goes himself and even the markers didn't know what happened.

Obviously the mid year signing of Gaz, being the best team for the past 2 years, the big first round of finals demolishing of Manly made me confident, but we had been there before and lost. After the soward gf in the prelim against tigers I couldn't be confident.

Ahh the life of being a st george supporter.

Before the season kicked off in 2003, I recall seeing Penrith's odds which were something like 100-1 and saying 'I like those odds!', a la Homer Simpson's reaction to the weatherman's impending appearance at the Laugh and Brew.

The build up throughout the season, particularly in that 8 wins in a row stretch was a nice feeling, and beating Souths to reach top of the table was even better.

Even when Penrith won the minor premiership, I still had a nagging feeling that the fairy tale run would finish abruptly. But as I was walking out of Telstra Stadium after we beat the Warriors, I felt quietly confident, although I was a realist in that I thought the Roosters were the better team.

To be honest, it would not have been until that second Rooney try that I was truly convinced that we had won.

I think it would have been when Melbourne snapped their 5 game losing streak in 2012. Against Penrith at AAMI. The first two sets yielded a try and a 40-20 kick consecutively. Don't remember the final score but I remember thinking there was an air of inevitability about the Storm that day. 7 weeks later the trophy was headed south of the Murray again.

when nathan fein scored in 2010..

up till then the little negative voice in my head kept on calculating the time left, and all the different times we'd lost from similar positions...

Funny. I would have said when the touchie refused to put his flag up. Morris was out. ;-)

I took a group of indigenous kids to a snow trip around Canberra that year. News filtered through on our bus that Wests Tigers lost to Penrith that day. The kids gave me curry about it. I said to them in reply that when the Tigers win the 2005 premiership, I'd buy each and every one of them a Tigers cap.
About six weeks and $270 later, I presented all 16 kids with a 2005 premiership cap.

Great story, mate! Sounds like something my Tigepies supporting uncle would do!

Had a funny exchange with Wendell Sailor one day. He came in to work to do some promotion for his book and one of my bosses bought him down to say hello to me and we talked footy for about 10 minutes. Delightful bloke. He asked me who was going to make the GGF and this was on the eve of the prelim.

I said Roosters vs. Manly and he said Roosters vs. Souths because of the "traditional " grand final and emotion factor. I said "but, Dell. Week one of the finals. I don't remember the last time I saw defense like that. Detinite GF preview."

So I one upped International Dell! :)
