1. There is arguably greater scrutiny on our club's salary cap given the salary cap debacle a couple of years ago.
2. We don't seem to have any wealthy supporters willing to give us a path to TPAs (i.e. our own Uncle Nick or Porky Morgan).
3. Our brand is pretty shit right now. We are the only club to have salary cap cheated their way to a series of wooden spoons.
4. We are fighting for the scraps in western Sydney with other clubs.
5. We still have a 'sort out the books' approach that has permeated the club since the salary cap dramas.
6. The remaining leaders at our club or not risk takers or even entrepreneurial enough to know how to get us out of the shitty mess we are in.
7. The club cant control its own destiny and the consitutional changes that Max promised don't appear to have been delivered.
8. We have idiot factions looming in the background ready to kick us in the goolies if we do anything remotely risky or contentious that would threaten their attempts to regain power in the future.
9. The majority of our players are mincers.
10. Our coach is struggling.

Sure, we might be able to turn some of this around over time, but that's why we are currently bereft of TPAs and are likely to be for some time yet.
Is there a down side?

TPAs are legal so what does scrutiny have to do with anything ? same about risk, why are they a risk if they are legal ?

The fact that we dont have the business nous or connections I can understand as we have just been put though the mill but the Eels brand and a new stadium must be worth some legal sponsorship.

If I owned a business and wanted to sponsor the Eels I'd be more inclined to do it now. First up, the salary crap issues are old news. Next, the new stadium. Get my business up in lights and on the jersey. Last of all, from a business point of view, coming off a wooden spoon I'd expect to get a generous 'value for money' deal compared to all the other clubs, as a sponsor.

Yes but that wouldn’t be a TPA (which is what the discussion is about). What you have described is a club sponsorship. A TPA doesn’t get their name up in lights at the stadium or on the jersey

yeh but there are some club sponsored TPAs that can benefit an investor, other clubs have them, the Club acknowledge their sponsors on their website and around the club etc. TPAs are sort of a few tiers below club sponsorship so if you are chipping in a $50K or $100K or so you dont expect your name up in lights

Point 8 is probably a s sufficient explanation. That and the related fact that our fans aren't the sharpest.

As far as I'm aware, someone who provides even one cent to the club is not allowed to provide TPAs.

TPA's are just fans and rich people with nothing better to do with their money than throw it away on a footballer. They're like racehorses for cashed up bogans

I think the more successful clubs bend the rules on TPAs and do so successfully.

Can’t subscribe to the idea that all clubs play by the rules when the rules are so malleable.

I completely agree with this on the basis that just about every team that has been busted is because of a whistle blower.

The salary cap auditor really does f**k all as far as busting clubs as they are encouraged to self report now so they get a slap on the wrist, although we did deserve to be anally probed after our pathetic effort

Agreed. Our f**k up was spectacularly stupid and as a result the outcome (appointing independent administration) was fairly significant.

I think a combination of caution from our side and extra scrutiny by the NRL means we aren't able to compete with other clubs right now.
