When do we call time?

Well didn’t French play nsw cup last?

Smith is just a back up.

BA has dropped / moved on or demoted his previous captains in Foran, Mannah and Scott.

He can make the tough decisions.
The problem is though, both Smith and French (as well as Taka) still saw plenty of first grade this year to suggest they could see enough in 2019 to attract interest from other clubs. That’s probably enough hope to keep them interested in staying with us and not pursue opportunities elsewhere.

I dare say BA felt no loyalty to Foran after the mess he caused so his demotion from the captaincy is largely irrelevant to this discussion. Foran also asked for a release if I remember correctly so he wasn’t really moved on.

Mannah hasn’t been dropped has he and what demotion has BA given him?

Scott’s the only one I can see that BA has really made a tough call on.

OK then. How is BA too close to the players?
I think he’s overly loyal and probably a bit too familiar with the playing group. Having pretty much either re-signed or recruited the entire playing roster now, I also think he feels he owes them to at least see out the contract he signed them for, at least to some degree.

Edit: I’ll add that these traits are generally good things to have and shows the character of the guy. However, coaching is a cut throat business (much like the corporate world) and ambitious, win at all cost attitudes are generally more successful.

What does 'too familiar' mean? I'd want a coach to know everything there is to know about his players.

Having pretty much either re-signed or recruited the entire playing roster now, I also think he feels he owes that roster spot to them to some degree.
That's a pretty sweeping statement. Which players has he re-signed that he shouldn't have (and what should he have done differently at the time)?

Also, how is recruiting a player a sign that he is overly loyal? If that player doesn't get his contract renewed then all that is happening is that a player is seeing out their contract.

By too familiar I mean he may be past his use-by-date with the players because he has been there now for 5 years and they are probably too used to his sprays, training techniques etc. He even admitted the players are sick of hearing his voice.

He gave them a spray after round 1, round 2 we got beaten by over 50. Sprays don’t seem to work anymore.

Maybe. We'll see next year I guess. I think they will go a lot better in 2019 than they did in 2018.

The time to get a new coach has passed now so I am going to support the current mob.

Off the top of my head, he sure as shit shouldn’t have resigned Smith and I think Kaysa has been a poor re-signing the last few times. I don’t think we’ve got value for on hoffman and the Evans signing is questionable at best.

I actually agree. We’ve missed the boat to move the coach on for 2019, I was simply agreeing that IMO we should have moved him on earlier this year. We absolutely need to decide by mid season next year.

Hoffman and Evans don't count as BA being too loyal. They aren't re-signings

Maybe he is guilty of being too loyal by re-signing Smith and Kaysa but what where his other options at the time?

It won't be the first time that we hear the 'experts' bang on about how we should have signed someone else at the end of 2018 but I was hoping to wait until at least our first loss in 2019 before hearing it.

Do we know whether any decent coaches were actually interested in coming to Parra in 2019? Actually, scratch that, we probably didn't talk to anyone.

Why couldn’t BA have a sense of loyalty towards Evans and Hoffman? He signed them so he may feel like he owes it to them to see out their contract. That’s a form of loyalty is it not?

Let’s say Smith is on $150-$200k. That’s a roster spot and an additional $150-$200k we could be offering Hayne next year.

Edit: FFS Jarryd.

But then he's just guilty of being too loyal to Hayne (i.e. another guy in our team!!!!).
Not necessarily. I think the whole loyalty concept comes more into play with the players he has signed/re-signed whilst they are contracted, rather than the act of contracting them in the first place.
