When is an 8 point try awarded?

When a player scores at the exact same time he is fouled.
Last one i can recall was 1993 when Polla Mounter fouled a bears player as he put the ball down.
The bears were down 17-0 and won 18-17 thanks to the 8 point try.

When an act of foul play occurs during the scoring of a try. Ie is a player puts it down and then a late tackle arrives with a cheap shot or knees.

iI an act of foul play occurs in a certain try scoring position. IE the ainscough hit on Smith in the 1999 grand final. The ref/video ref needs to be certain thata try would have been scored. this is a PENALTY try, different, its only worth 6 points but the kick is given in front regardless of where the try is scored.

I would imagine that if a player was streaking away down field and about to score, but the chaser trips him from behind with a soccer style sliding tackle....then this would be a penalty try NOT an 8 pointer.

for an 8 pointer to be awarded, the try has to be scored and foul play made afterwards or during the scoring of that try, Ie the try scorer puts the ball down, but if his support player is taken high and cheap off the ball then this can be an 8 pt try.

I'd love to see an 8 pt penalty try one day !

There is no such thing as an 8 point try - as such

There is a penalty try - where a try is awarded when no try was actually scored - but as beekershark pointed out - a try would for certain have been scored if it wasnt for the infringement.

And there are penalties awarded for infringements after the try is scored.

In both instances a regular 4 point try is awarded - but the goal kicker is awarded two shots at goal - one from where the try is scored (as usual) and one from directly in front.

So there is an opportunity to recieve 8 points - but the try itself is only worth the regular 4 points.

what was the last penalty try awarded ??? last one i can gather was the 99 grand final, has there been one since

I'm pretty sure the one in the 99 final wasn't a 8 point try. I saw a penalty try this year or last year involving the storm and warriors i think

That's a technicality. "8 point try" is a name (or at least, a nickname). So there is such a thing as an 8 point try.

That's the old rule. It was changed in 2000 - I don't agree with the change.

Now the foul has to be at the exact same time. So if he scores a try, then a player comes through with his knees or late tackle, then it's no longer an 8-point try. It has to be at the same instant.

8 point try and a penalty try is the same thing

as someone else mentioned, the only difference to a normal try, is you get a second penalty shot from right in front, so you are pretty much guaranteed to get at least 6 points, from the infringement, if the other shot is out wide

An 8 point try situation should have been given to the Cowboys on Saturday High tackle on Sing by Tupou as the try was scored Went through to the keeper

So, what happens when a player scores, gets up, and a defender runs in and king hits him ?

hes sent off obviously but where and when is the penatly awarded ?

its my understanding that the kicker gets to conver the try from where the try is scored, then gets a penalty for the king hit infringment from in front- effectively an 8 point try. but as has been pointed out, that term is wrong, its an 8 point PLAY, but not a guaranteed 8 pt try.

Speaking of technicalities, the term is a "Possible 8 point Try". And it is a completely different thing to a Penalty try.

I challenge you to find any reference in the rule book where it calls it an '8 point try.'
