There is one thing which depresses me about the state of hollywood. Action movies and action heroes have NEVER been in a more dire state than 2007.
Over the years, hollywood has supplied more than its fair share of real "men".

1960's : John Wayne, Lee Marvin (They did minimal physical activity, but were pioneer tough guys whom you would not want to mess with.).
1970's : Clint Eastwood, Charles Bronson, Bruce Lee (Great one-liners, more physical action).
1980's : Arnie, Stallone, Seagal, Van Damme, Sho Kosugi, Mel Gibson, Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis, Rutger Hauer, Harrison Ford, Chuck Norris, Jesse Ventura, Hulk Hogan, Dolph Lundgren, Steve James Michael Dudikoff (well...maybe exempt him). (The peak tough guy period. I have left so many guys out as well. These guys had action, fighting skills, great weapon skills, great one-liners....the whole package).
1990's : Wesley Snipes, John Travolta (the beginning of the end....action movie roles were mainly filled by successful men from the 80's. The action men breeding program ceased to progress, which would lead to a drought in the following decade. The 90's could have been a lot worse, if not for Travolta's transformation from whimp to tough guy and the charming Wesley Snipes).
2000's : The Rock...(OMG....what has the world come to????? The Rock is the ONLY actor who has shown signs of being a man this decade. Even he is on the downhill slide :(. Don't DARE refer to pretenders in Vin Diesel and Ice Cube.....they are fakes. If anybody refers to Pitt and Clooney as action men, they should admit themselves to the cookeyhouse.)

Men, we have to stand up and DEMAND that real men return to action roles. I am tired of seeing "fake" men (clooney, pitt, bana) trying to look tough. Let REAL MEN return to the forefront of cinema.

If Arnie could recruit an "Oceans Eleven", he'd do a lot better job than the current weak-ass gang. Try this for Arnie's 11

1. Arnie
2. Sly
3. Willis
4. Snipes
5. Bronson
6. Eastwood
7. Lee
8. Seagal
9. Marvin
10. Gibson
11. Van Damme

I know who I'd choose.

Unfortunately, only Bruce Willis and Sly are carrying the flag for the true action men, while "The Rock" is trying to get his sh*t together. Hopefully, this will mark the start of the "man" revivial.

There is something of a lull in the action genre of late. The trend seems to have gone towards thrillers and epics. You're right that it's a sad state of affairs when The Rock is pretty much the sole 'action here' of our decade who isn't some older guy trying to harken back to his glory days (such as Sly or Willis).

CWBush, you are right. It is at a crisis at the moment. The only way to bring the glory days back is to see movies like "Rambo 4" in droves. People protest about the industrial reforms, but this stuff takes priority. We should be seeing remakes and sequels of classics, such as "Commando" and "Cobra", NOT Oceans 13.

Btw, I like the sales pitch of the new "Oceans 13" movie. They realised that the movie public didn't like seeing the wimps again in "Oceans 12". I mean they used Julia Roberts as a sales pitch instead of using a real woman like Pamela Anderson or Sharon Stone. How pathetic!!!!
So, the producers have now recruited a "real" man in Al Pacino. Let's hope he keeps his toughness and dignity in front of women like Pitt. A real man in Pacino should see tickets sales go through the roof.

You must carry a handbag and read "Mills and Boon" novels. Try watching "Commando" as you may learn something about being a man.

I think most movie audiences have become too smart to be still be entertained by mindless action, violence and bloodlust.

Plus stuntmen are a dying breed - CGI has meant that you can have even crazier stunts and you can keep the pretty-boy leading men in the main roles

i rate jason statham as an action (and comedy) actor.
transporter 1 & 2... crank... the italian job.. revolver.. thats not even mentioning his comedy movies etc (and perhaps the best 2 he's in, lock stock and snatch).

the action hero has certainly changed from yester year though. keanu reeves would be another modern action hero (funny but true). we rarely have actors that typecast themselves as solely action stars these days.. too much money to be made acting in other genres.
