I think you will find that its because of the audience thats killed the action star and time....
Times have changed and so have the people who view the films and the more the audience want bigger films, budgets go up and so does the level of acting required for bigger budgets.
Take steven segal(however its spelt) he made top cheap action films cant remember the last one i have watched but i always have noticed he has made about 50 since i viewed his last movie so time has changed he is out of favour so he attracts small budgets that make his films crapola...
Also i think that not everybodies cup of tea is a huge hulking muscle bound actor in the action genre take Jet Li for instance doesnt get huge budgets to his films but he is small but powerful when it comes to his style of martial arts very good..
So in essence we are to blame in some points for the way movies change and what becomes produced and directed and how much it is going to cost and to what genre we consume....:D

You forgot one star.....Chuck Norris...

Maybe not an action man in the mold of an arnie or a sly, but i think Jackie Chan should probably make the 90's list. He may make gay kiddie sh*t like the tuxedo or that crappy western thing he does with Owen Wilson these days, but some of his other stuff from last decade was pure action entertainment.
Another one that might have been if not for a freak accident was Brandon Lee.

true enough, but Jet Li didnt really have the hollywood fame that Chan acheived through the 90's, but yeah i agree, Li can actually act as well.

Li has a presence about him, his acting is great, love him in Lethal Weapon 4.

i rate jason statham as an action (and comedy) actor.
transporter 1 & 2... crank... the italian job.. revolver.. thats not even mentioning his comedy movies etc (and perhaps the best 2 he's in, lock stock and snatch).

the action hero has certainly changed from yester year though. keanu reeves would be another modern action hero (funny but true). we rarely have actors that typecast themselves as solely action stars these days.. too much money to be made acting in other genres.

lol crank = greatest movie ever and yeh jason owns
it also helps that the movie stars amy smart too ;-)

Jason Statham will be the next Steven Seagal, and I don't mean that in a good way. Like Segal every film changes the name of his character and that's about it. Everything else about him remains the same.

Jet Li is a legend though. Fearless is an awesome movie, but my favourite has to be Unleashed. That one shows he can really act as well as kick some arse. Didn't hurt that Morgan Freeman was alongside him though.

Gotta agree with you there because fearless was one movie i loved specially when the surround sound was turned up loud absolutley brilliant....

One action star that never made it was Howie Long the guy that was in broken arrow and firestorm was once named to be the action star of the future and then died in the donkey....

One movie i saw way back in the day was a movie called Stone Cold with Brian Bosworth at the time i thought he would be a big action star but once again another that died in the donkey...:(
