Thats true, its like starting as a whole new side. How long did it take till warriors and cowboys were competitive???

Warriors - first season, they were one unbelievable illegal replacement faux pas away from making the finals, being deducted two points for a 46-8 win over Wests when fielding an illegal substitute for a few seconds.

And after all that, they've never won the wooden spoon.

We (the Raiders) play them in a fortnight... I have a horrible feeling we will be 'drought-breakers' :(

Keep Merrit, Cusak & Sutton. Replace the rest with PL players. I doubt if they can do any worse.

And bring Katinas back as 1st Grade coach, even if its only "part-time". He was a much better coach than McRae was.

They could have had two wins from the Knights and the Roosters. Both were begging to be beaten.

I think part of Souths biggest problem was their first season back. The recruitment for that team was completely and utterly diabolical. They signed a bunch of hacks, and thus, it has continued. Once you set a culture in motion, generally it continues.

You look at the halves they have now, Williams - nothing, Walker - nothing, Sutton can be devastating at six but gets no support from the number 7. Its been like that since their reintroduction.

Basically they seem to have either recruited borderline reserve graders, over the hill donkeys, or toilers and nothing more. Players like Chris Caruana, Anthony Colella, Owen Craigie, Jamie Fitzgerald, Glenn Grief, Andrew Hinson, Andrew King, Duncan McGilvary, Scott McLean, Paul McNicholas, Blainey Stanley, Zane Clarke, Stacey Katu, Damien Mostyn and Joven Clarke were terrible purchases for season 2002. None of them offered anything. None of them. Not one of them.

However, was this because they entered the player market well after all the other teams? If it was, its understandable, but is still largely the reason in my book they've fallen by the wayside - along with infamous decisions like 3 year contracts to unproven coaches on the basis of a close loss.

Seeing as souths have almost locked in the wooden spoon this yr (and prob next yr) I propose a 2nd award....the plastic spoon. Awarded to the team that finishes 2nd last.

Has any team that has been in the comp for more than thirty years not had the spoon other than Manly.

Manly has never had it in 60 which, if nothing else, is an achievement

It can't be there worst start as they didn't win a game in 1956 - maybe it's their worse start in 50 years...

Maybe thy'll do a newcastle who last year were crap for over half the season. Then again maybe they won't.

Manly are the only one with such longevity in the game (1947-today) not to have the spoon. They came close many times though in the early days, but the Eels were even worst and saved the eagles the spoon.

souths have been cellar dwellers since 1989 when they ironically won the minor premiership. A losing culture sure is hard to overcome.

Interesting to note that in 1989 Souths indeed won the Minor Premiership, then in 1990 Uncle George took over the reins of the club and they got the spoon that year.

Yeah but personally I'd rather have the record of never losing a Grand Final than never getting the spoon. You never know, 5 years from now Manly could have an absolute SHOCKER. Imagine suggesting the same to a Newcastle fan in 2000...

Souths are run like a welfare department - The club needs to make decisions such as the following.

1) Sign Chris Anderson as coach with him having full control over other coaching / trainer appointments and player signing and retention

2) relocate to the central coast and collect the 15 million on offer

3) Sell Souths seniors for approx 10 million

4) Form themselves into a company - central coast rabbitohs pty ltd and float the club on the stock exhange - share issue 5million shares @ $1 - 49% stake in the club

5) get souths juniors/central coast to finance the lower grades as well as a 1 mill grant to the company ( central coast rabbitohs pty ltd) from souths juniors.- 51% of the club owned by crowe/homes acourt/souths juniors/central coast

6) do a deal with the central coast consortium for an equal split of gate takings/signage /ground naming rights /food and beverage sales etc

7) obtain 2 million in sponsorship

8) gain 100% control over merchandise and sales and name

9) company board consisting of reps of the crowe/homes acourt /souths juniors/central coast groups / other people appointed by the shareholders (49%)- minimum fees for board members though

finances - approx not including business/company tax offsets etc

bank - 30 Million

Income

2.5 million from NRL
1 Million from 50% ground etc split
2.0 sponsorship
1.5 million in merchandise sales

2 million for coaches/trainers/football club wages and costs
_____

_______

______

pay say 0.20c dividend per share - 0.14c per share fully franked - 14% profit would be very attractive for the small invester as well as the 0.06 c per share tax credit

Yes, I am aware that Uncle George was coach in '89. He could coach a team, no doubt. But running a football club???

It still isn't right for a Manly supporter to complain about Souths recruitment when you consider how they (Manly) raped them (Souths) of STARS in the '70's and did the same to Wests in the '80's.
How many International or State reps did they recruit from you ???

I'm hardly complaining...It's more a point being made that Souths had a better opportunity to field a higher quality squad than we did for 2002, but have failed miserably over the past 5 years! Why can't they get thier sh*t together when we have?

Muir Played SoO in 2001 didn't he? Sure, he turned out to be a useless sack of sh*t, but that's beyond the point!

We've competed in about 15 or so of the things though...that's a quarter of GF's since our inception. We've got a strike rate similiar to yours as well for winning the things too ;-) . Back in the early days though apparently Manly where Chokers though!

They were actually! If you read about the team's history in 'The History of Rugby League Clubs', you'll see that before 1972, Manly had a worse record in Grand Finals than Cronulla do! They lost something like 5 deciders before they finally popped the cherry. Having followed teams to the spoon and Grand Final defeat in the NRL and the A-League these past 12 months, I can say that losing a Grand Final hurts way more. The feeling of being so close but still not being able to get all the way is awful.
