My proposal for a 10 Country World Cup

Pool A Pool B
Australia New Zealand
England Somoa
Wales Tonga
Lebanon France
P.N.G Russia

Australia v England at Aussie Staduim
Australia v Lebanon at Melbourne Dome
Australia v P.N.G at Dairy Farmers Staduim Townsville
Australia v Wales at Suncorp Staduim
England v Wales at Gosford
England v Lebanon at Parramatta Staduim
England v P.N.G at Gold Coast
Wales v P.N.G at Wollongong
Wales v Lebanon at Belmore
Lebanon v P.N.G at Belmore

N.Z v Somoa at Erikson
N.Z v Tonga at Jaide Staduim Chritchurch
N.Z v France at Wellington
N.Z v Russia at Waikato Staduim
Somoa v Tonga at Erikson
Somoa v France at Hamilton
Somoa v Russia at Invercargill
Tonga v France at Dunedin
Tonga v Russia at Small staduim in Auckland
France v Russia Double header with Nz v Somoa

Semi Finals

Winner Pool A vs Runner up Pool B at Suncorp Staduim
Winner Pool B vs Runner up Pool A at Erikson Staduim
Final Winner game 1 v winner game 2 at Staduim Australia

Kept 3 of the 4 Lebanon games in Sydney to keep the Lebanese crowds happy. Australia which is the major draw card playing at larger staduims. Good spread with out stretching the budget to far. Financially the world cup need to split the cup between to countries. This will insure larger crowds. Kept Somoa , Tonga in Pool B due to large communities in NZ .

What u think?

I posted this a while back as part of a possible format for the upcoming International Calendar

The World Cup Finals will be hosted by Australia and New Zealand at the end of the NRL season, during the time the tri-nations would normally be staged. It will be contested by 10 teams. I read that Great Britain wants a 12 team world cup and Australia want an 8 or 10 team cup. Let us compromise and make it 10 teams, with two pools of five. By calling it the World Cup finals we can avoid the media taunts over the fact that there are only 10 teams competing. We can also market the comp as the cream of International League.

The World Cup Finals would then progress as follows: (Please note the teams shown are only being used as a guide; I have no idea who would actually qualify)

Pool A

Australia (Auto qualifier)

France (Auto qualifier)

Papua New Guinea (Southern Hemisphere qualifier)

Ireland (Northern Hemisphere Qualifier)

Lebanon (Northern Hemisphere Qualifier)

Pool B

Great Britain (Auto qualifier)

New Zealand (Auto qualifier)

Wales (Northern Hemisphere Qualifier)

Cook Islands (Southern Hemisphere qualifier)

Fiji (Southern Hemisphere qualifier)

Format

Pool A Game 1 - Australia v France Suncorp Stadium (Match to follow opening ceremony)

Pool B Game 1 - Great Britain v New Zealand Ericsson Stadium (NZ)

Double Header

Pool B Game 2 - Cook Islands v Fiji North Harbour Stadium (NZ)

Pool B Game 3 - New Zealand v Wales North Harbour Stadium (NZ)

Double Header

Pool B Game 4 - Great Britain v Cook Islands Dairy Farmers Stadium

Pool A Game 2 - France v Papua New Guinea Dairy Farmers Stadium

Pool B Game 5 - Great Britain v Wales Bruce Stadium

Pool A Game 3 - Australia v Ireland Aussie Stadium

Double Header

Pool A Game 4 - Ireland v Lebanon Express Advocate Stadium

Pool A Game 5 - Australia v Papua New Guinea Express Advocate Stadium

Pool B Game 6 - Great Britain v Fiji Hindmarsh Stadium (Adelaide)

Double Header

Pool A Game 6 - France v Lebanon Olympic Park (Melbourne)

Pool B Game 7 - New Zealand v Fiji Olympic Park (Melbourne)

Pool B Game 8 - Cook Islands v Wales Jade Stadium (NZ)

Double Header

Pool A Game 7 - Papua New Guinea v Lebanon Members Equity Stadium (Perth)

Pool B Game 9 - New Zealand v Cook Islands Members Equity Stadium (Perth)

Pool A Game 8 - France v Ireland Newcastle

Pool A Game 9 - Australia v Lebanon Aussie Stadium (Final pool game will follow a ceremony celebrating 100 years of Rugby League in Australia. Things to include, a parade of past league legends etc.)

Finals – 6 teams progress, 3 from each pool. Top two teams from each pool (Australia and Great Britain) progress to week two of finals

Australia

Great Britain

New Zealand

France

Wales

Ireland

Finals Week 1

Game A – New Zealand v Ireland Olympic Park (Melbourne)

Game B – France v Wales Aussie Stadium

Final Week 2 (Double Header)

Game C - Winner Game B (France) v Great Britain Suncorp Stadium

Game D - Winner Game A (New Zealand) v Australia Suncorp Stadium

Grand Final

Winner Game C (Great Britain) v Winner Game D (Australia) Telstra Stadium (Match to follow closing ceremony)

By getting regional venues to host double headers we ensure bigger crowds, whilst reducing the costs of hiring two venues. Double headers at North Harbour and Express Advocate would go close to selling out. I’ve also attempted to minimise the number of games held in Sydney to ensure a larger crowd for the final at Telstra Stadium.

Concessions would be made for those who purchased qualifier tickets for the finals.

Those early pool matches shouldn’t see two many blow outs, except in the games Australia, New Zealand and Great Britain are involved in. Games like Papua New Guinea v Lebanon and Cook Islands v Wales should see some very close and exciting matches.

The finals are a simple six team, three round format. The second week double header at Suncorp Stadium would go close to selling out.

Good list of grounds dimitri.

Although if we co-host with NZ it will mean that the whole list may not be used.

Ages ago I posted a list of matches and grounds for the RLWC. I'll see if I can find it.

That is a sensational format if you ask me.
Well done, well thought out.

Personally I want 12 teams, I still think we have to get the USA into the Finals. The more exposure we can give to the USA the better for our sport. But this is possibly the best format I have seen so far.
I like the idea of the double headers.

anything less than 12 teams is hardly worth of a world cup

and would be a massive step backwards from 2000 when we had 16 teams

we really should have 12 teams

either 3 pools of 4 or 4 pools of 3

or perhaps 2 pools of 6

either way we need enough teams so that many games can be played around aus and maybe nz

we also need enough teams so that it doesnt look like a mickey mouse tournament

8 or 10 teams to me would make it look like a mickey mouse tournament

Nice layout Colonel but huge question mark on the amount of flying these teams are doing and whether they can afford it. I think it makes sense to keep games from each pool in two seperate countries... Especially the New Zealand pool, short distances means less cost for the tournament. I would have second thoughts on Perth and Adelaide too only because of distances and other Rugby League areas deserve more.

Look at England for example... I ashume u don't mean Great Britain as Wales is apart of great britain. On your proposal Great Britain go from Auckalnd to Townsville to Canberra to Adelaide to Brisbane and then the final in Sydney.. WOW big costs and gruelling on the players.
