I said Titans before, but the more I think about it, the more I think Canberra.
I mean who misses the Comets? the Cannons? the Cosmos? Bludger of a place.

Agreed. Very astute business sense from all concerned at Red V HQ.

Yep gypsy. I always laugh when the Sharks supporters crap on about the Dragons merging. It was a brilliant decision. We took the initiative and secured our future. There were some grumbles but 99% of them have gone and within a generation nobody at all will care.

Teams like the Sharks sit still and will eventually have the decision forced on them and the terms mat not be favourable. That or, do nothing and languish at the bottom of the table forever. The sporting landscape is changing. Not for the better, sadly. Money talks and that is a by-product of your supporter base. Grow or die.

I agree too, it was a smart move to merge with a team with similar colours and get a whole new city and juniors to support your team.

Really it shouldn't matter what club it is. Just a Sydney club. It's inevitable like everyone is saying. I say, just draw straws. It really doesn't matter. If it came up dragons, won't matter because dragons fans will follow them if they end up relocated. Still the mighty red V after all. Same with all the clubs. Footy won't be the loser, fans won't care. Just either switch to another club or follow the Adelaide, roosters, bunnies. Sharks, dragons etc.

To easy.

I don't know about that Miller. Footy is pretty tribal. I would rather see a merger than a relocation. If Rabbits and Roosters merge for example, there would be some angst (there always is) but it would create a powerhouse. Both team's supporters would still have a team and it's still local. Some would be pissed off but the majority would work through it. And their kids wouldn't care as long as they have a team in the neighbourhood. But if you moved one to the Central Coast (for arguments sake) it would really become a Central Coast team. The geography doesn't work.

Spot on. Mergers are the go.

Very few teams have their traditional identities anymore anyway. Look at the Roosters squad...that place is just a transit lounge. Souths have sold out as well, they used to be the people's club...now they get about in Armani Suits and have basically bought (some) success through big name signings. If they merge, they still buy players...big deal.

Tradition helps some sports, look at the EPL. Conversely, it holds others back. The NRL falls into the latter IMO.

A positive for a relocation is that if it is a Sydney team relocated, they'd probably play 8-9 away games in Sydney alone. Obviously not the same as a merger that'd play all its games in Sydney plus another 6-7 away games also in that city but you'd keep your identy.

All clubs are important for different reasons

NFL has 32 teams. EPL 24 teams

ARL had 20 teams in 1995 and 22 minus Melbourne during the SL War

I don't believe we can ever go back to 12 teams so we need a new model

I like 20 teams in two conferences. A Sydney conference and a regional conference. Where you play each other twice and the other conference once over 28 rounds

Which means Perth, Central Coast, West Brisbane, Wellington can all join

Or expand to 26 teams over 25 rounds with Adelaide, C Qld, Redcliffe and Darwin, Hobart and Port Moresby

The Sharks being in a strong financial position is the biggest myth I've heard. They're only barely getting by with handouts from the NRL. They will crumble or re-locate by 2016

It'd have to be a NSW/Canberra conference because if/when we get to 20 teams there is not going to be the current 9 Sydney teams. There will be a relocation of one or a merger of two teams which will allow the Bears plus Newcastle and Canberra to join a conference of 10... It could be like the pre-1988 Winfield Cup conference vs other post 1988 clubs
