I have been loathe to be too critical of McCrone when we were winning games as he seemed to be a steady, good defending partner for Widdop. But, yesterday he was a liability, pure and simple.

I think fans expect a first grade player to be picked for first grade rather than an acknowledged reserve grader picked week in week out. Reasonable expectation no? I understand having mccrone in teh squad to sub in for the odd game when desperate however picking him consistently is surrendering the side to confirmed mediocrity. We literally cannot excel or improve with McCrone in the team week in week out.

If Hutch didn't tear his ACL, McCrone would be nowhere near First Grade. And given we had Ben Hunt in our sights, no point getting an established half for just one year. We don't have a lot of options. Yes we could play Mann at half but haven't seen enough of him there to make a call.

All things considered, we're still in the mix for the top 4 even with McCrone at half so I'm pretty happy with that.

We've seen enough of McCrone to know that someone else deserves the opportunity.

I think it's fair to say that Mcrone is a pass mark...because in all honesty
We don't possess a star studded backline, we do lack speed and tbh leading into the season ..most of our backline would have struggled to get a run if they were at other clubs..if you look at Canberra for example who have, Whitton, Leilua, Lee, Rapanna, the bikie looking dude with the goatee and when we consider that currently the reggies are less than impressive than as much as I hate to say safety first with Mcrone is a pass mark for now...and he seems to compliment our power game..I even think MacDonald and Nightingale play more like second rowers than wingers...one can only hope that next year along with Hunt we aim for better and have a plan to bring along the likes do Garrick Thompson, Dufty, Field...lets hope that's the plan as our power game appears to be fading and becoming less and less affective against the top teams...
Having said all this I'd replace Mcrone if I could for Nona but of course won't happen

2016 Marshall hands down.
Marshall
16 Games
10 Try assists
3 line breaks
196 tackles

2017 Mccrone
14 Games
9 try assists
1 line break
261 tackles

When you consider the winning % difference and that mccrone would be on significantly less coin Marshall is way worse.

Also consider while mccrone is not great he always gives 100%. Marshall not so much

Why would anyone other than MacGregor play Benji at halfback. After dropping Macrone after 10 games last year you would have looked at the big picture and given Mann /Field a go in the hope building for a premiership

I would have liked to see Benji playing with the style we've played this year when on song. Then, I think we could've seen a much better result from Benji.

Vaughan and McInness have added a lot to the team and JDB has improved. I think Marshall would have done well in this team. Having said that Widdop/Marshall was not a good combination, both are ball running 5/8ths in my opinion. Although Widdop does seem to have adapted his game this year.

In what world is McCrone a better player than Marshall outside of this club?!?!

I think he was answering the question who was worse. So McCrone is a worse individual player, however Marshall was worse in 2016 than McCrone this year. Which I agree with - the results speak for themselves.

Absolutely. I dont think anyone will argue that Mcrone is a better player than Benji - although he is a much better defender. However 2016 Benji was rubbish. Mcrone has done some good things but his kicking game and decision making are terrible. It sometimes feels like we win in spite of having him in the team rather than a benefit of having him

I'd argue Benji purely because he was on a lot more money than McCrone, had a lot more upside and had just come off a reasonable return to form in 2015. No one was under any illusions about what McCrone was going to bring to the table this year.

I think the most telling insight into the Widdop-Marshall fiasco was when Mary came out after our round one win over Penrith and, when asked about the combination between Widdop and McCrone, said 'Gaz likes playing with McCrone'. That says to me that Widdop didn't enjoy playing with Marshall and no matter how good either individual was, they weren't going to gel in a positive way.

Benji's off playing good footy and so is Widdop. They're like my parents: great individuals who go about as well together as pizza and icing sugar.

A fully fit McCrone v a busted up Benji playing for a contract and getting no support from WIddop? Dumb poll. Benji with a quality half in Ben Hunt shows what he can do. McCrone with a decent half will do absolute jack $hite. You do realise that Widdop was just as much to blame as Benji last year? If anything Widdop threw Benji under a bus and ran off. If he played like he is this year when Benji was busted up and allowed Benji to come in and out of games they would have done much better last year.

Did anyone see how good Benji played on the weekend? Wow, he was freaking awesome. McCrone could not provide that many highlights in a year as to what Benji did in 1 game.

I just don't get how bad Mann/Nonna/Field must be for Mary not to give them a run ahead of McCrone.

I take it all back, I'd rather McCrone.

At least with McCrone you have consistency, it's consistently bad, but at least we know this. He will always give up 7 tackles and kick to fullbacks because he's an very average first grader.

Benji on the other hand is a former international and premiership winner, who on his day can be devastating. Only problem is that is one day and as last night proved as soon as that day is over he's back to throwing balls that go 10 feet behind its intended target, or over the head of his target into the crowd.
