Mate, I can only guess.

Personally I would like to see Scott and Jarrod.

If I were a gambling man, I would be leaning toward Mullen and Bailey.

I am not a Coach or privy to any information, this is just an uninformed opinion.

I think The_Joey_Show has a bit of a cruch on Bailey....

I would have a massive crush on Bailey... but I can't find anyone who will lend me a steamroller :D

Is there a difference between who should and who will?

Who I think should: Mullen/Dureau

Who will: Depends on Walsh's fitness. If he gets some pre-season going I think it will be Walsh/Mullen, but ATM I see Hilder/Mullen with either Dureau or Walsh on the bench to come on and play in the halves with Hilder moving to Hooker to give Danny a rest (Its gonna be another big year for Danny.... best not burn him out.)

Imho:

Should: Mullo, Gidley

Will: Walsh, Mullo

I just dont think we have the talent at fullback to consider moving gidley back at this stage, long term however if things dont work out for walsh/ dureau Gidley will be back.

Dear god please tell me you're not serious about putting Kids back in the halves.

Due to specialist nature of the defensive positions with the halves usuallly locked 3 in, it is important that the halves can defend. I do not agree with hiding halves on the wing.

Therefor my halves would be Hilder/Mullo and no Bailey is not good in the defensive position at 3 in (absolutely atrocious against the Titans)

Knights hand Dureau, Bailey half shot

KNIGHTS halves hopefuls Scott Dureau and Chris Bailey will get first crack at securing one of the play-making positions when they split time partnering Jarrod Mullen in the NRL trial against New Zealand Warriors at North Harbour Stadium on February 15.

Coach Brian Smith will name a 22-man squad in the week leading up to the Knights' first serious hit-out but indicated Dureau and Bailey would be preferred for the Warriors game over 2007 No.7 Luke Walsh, who has been plagued by injury and illness during summer.

Barring injury, Mullen is the only certainty for a scrum-base start in Newcastle's NRL season-opener against Canberra at EnergyAustralia Stadium on March 15.

But whether he plays five-eighth or half could depend more on the performances of Dureau, Bailey and Walsh in trials against the Warriors, then Cronulla at Cessnock Sportsground on March 1, than his own contribution.

"We'll probably only take one of the halves, and because Walshy's not been able to train at all until the last week or so, we're looking at taking Dureau [at halfback] and Bailey [at five-eighth] to fit in with Mullo," Smith said.

"I'd say Mullo will probably get a bit of time at both five-eighth and half, and the other two will get a bit of time in their chosen positions."

Smith stressed Walsh was still in the mix for the season proper but had to establish a strong fitness base in the final month of training after ankle surgery then an abdominal ailment wiped out most of his pre-Christmas conditioning program.

"We're probably looking for a good solid month's worth of training for him, then he'll get a trial in that game against the Sharks at Cessnock," he said.

Dureau's only NRL appearance came in Newcastle's 50-16 loss to Manly at Gosford in August last year, but that made the Taree-born 21-year-old hungrier for more.

"Getting that one shot, I realised last year how close I was to being a full-time first-grader, so it's addictive, really you get one taste and you just want more," said Dureau, who signed a new two-year deal at the end of last season.

A halfback by choice and Newcastle's Premier League Player of the Year last season, Dureau said he had benefited greatly from the skills sessions conducted by former captain and halfback Andrew Johns in the past two months.

"We've had a few sessions with him, and any time you get a chance to train with Joey, it's a goldmine, really. You want it to go for 10 hours rather than one," he said.

"If you picked up just one per cent of the understanding that he had, you're going to go a long way, so any time you get to spend time with him, you've got to listen and learn as much as you can because you never know when he'll be back.

"There's some healthy competition for positions and that's good. I can't wait for the trials and the start of the season to come around."

It is very wide open.

I am a little surprised some forum members would consider Gidley for 5/8.

We have discussed why his attacking style suits fullback so well, but his defence is also far more suited to fullback as well.

His instinctive one on one tackling is excellent, but in the line, with a lot of traffic, this style throws our two, or three on one system into chaos.

With the amount of work the Kicking Coach is doing this year, I am certain Smith wants quality kicking options at both 6 & 7, with a third option from 9. With all due respect to Gids, his kicking is simply not up to the standard of the others competing for either 6 & 7 spots.

He is perfectly suited for fullback.

For me defence in the halves is our biggest concern. We have been blessed in the past with a halfback who defends and defends hard and hiding players on the wing due to a defencive weakness solves nothing ie. the Benji Marshall experiment.

Ill admit I havnt seen much of Dureau as he has only played 1 first grade game and I live out of state so I dont see much of our PL side, but surely his D couldnt be any worse than Walshs.

Maybe we need to have a hard hitting back rower act as our halves "bodyguard" ala Tonie Carroll

he has been tackle shy for a year or two due to a dodgy shoulder. apparently that is all over and he is good to go. he is short but a bit nuggety so should slow them down ok. Walsh is built like a 12 year old, but has a heart like phar lap when it comes to defence.

IMO Simmo or Tolar will be lock for precisely that purpose.

agree 100% .. and i can't understand why certain forum members can't see this. i thought this would be the only unanimous agreement before the season started this year.

it actually hurts my eyes to read people suggest gidley at 5/8th again. he looked sh*t there with andrew johns inside him, how you think he's gonna look with jarrod mullen?!

One of the few positive of these boys both being hugely injury prone is that no doubt both will get plenty of opportunity!
