Who were you surprised never made it?

I remember back in around 2008 there was a story about Penrith signing a 16 year old kid who's name escapes me, but he was on a solid contract (4-5 year contract backloaded to hit 6 figures when he was about 20 in the final year, back when min contract was $50k). I don't think he ever made it to firsts but the club had a solid wrap on him.

Or maybe I am just talking out of my backside.

Out of the 3 Wallabies to convert in 1988
Papworth (Eastern Suburbs)
Matt Bourke (Manly)
Ricky Stuart (Canberra)

Papworth was considered the pick of the bunch. I remember articles in the Sun and the Mirror how he was the signing of the year
I don’t remember any positive article on Ricky Stuart

Yep, that’s what playing for Souths will do to you. Honestly I can remember the raps on the kid when he was young and he was on the bench for Easts against Illawarra in 1997 and he made the starting 13 against the Gold Coast the following week, I had forgotten he was injured in that game but I lost track of him after that, I do remember the drug incident happened when he was South Sydney quite a few years later.

Yeah not much up top unfortunately. I remember seeing him in the lower grades, he just carved up, scoring tries from kickoffs etc. Probably got a big head and didn't work hard enough.

Papworth was savaged by injury.

Am going to assume you're tongue in cheek when talking about Ricky Stuart.

He was a great halfback in an era full of great halves.

Bourke and Wills. Always thought they were going to make it. What went wrong?
They refused help from the indigenous Australians.
King stole some flour from the supplies that probably helped him last long enough for the aboriginal men to save him.
He took their help .
He was on his deathbed when he finally thought it was a good idea though.

The papers use to run those filler stories every year. I remember reading one on Parra signing up a 12-year-old to a scholarship. Never heard of any of them again, except for Jordan Rankin.

Jacin Sinclair was an exceptional talent. But he obviously had his demons off the field.

what happened to that warriors U20s hooker Nefe Seleniu? or something like that.

He had so much speed and expected him to be doing what Cook is doing now.

Still can't believe that this bloke never made it:

Hey guys,

Just after some friendly advice. I'm considering making a comeback next year after a 2 year break. I previously played for Souths Logan. Should I stay at my current weight (113kg) or drop 10kg?

I'm a former back rower.

I meant in regard to the media buzz at the start of 1988 season.
All the newspapers carried article on how Papworth was the buy of the season.
Bourke also got good media attention
With Stuart a can not remember any media articles about him, and I was only later that I found out that he was a wallaby

TBF, He copped serious leg injuries very early on two (three?) seasons in a row. Hardly surprising he never hit the heights after that.
