The Eels not making the 8 would not be a travesty, it would prove that Brian Smith's time, the coach unable to adapt to the modern game, is up and force Parramatta's hand in dumping him for the 2006 season despite having time left on his contract.
Admittedly, Smith again has to gel a newish team together and this will be an exucse down the track if they struggle as they have no solid halves pairing, a new dummy half in which could add to a slow start for the Eels if the creative men are not cohesive.
Honestly, I can see Smith at the Eels in 2006 as Fitzgerald is a fan of Smith and more importantly a fan of money in which he would not look forward to a payout to the coach for terminating the contract.
The Eels have the right tools to make the 8 in 2005, a good forward pack bolstered by the return of a fit Nathan Cayless, with the addition of Paul Stringer and Mark Riddell. Add Nathan Hindmarsh, Daniel Wagon (overrated IMO), Mick Vella and the like...you have one half of what's needed to win a premiership, A BRILLIANT FORWARD PACK.
The halves will be the key for Smith, if he does not get this right, it will be a season of ups and downs for Smith and the outside backs Tahu included.
