Why does Brisbane only have 1 team?

Is this the biggest joke in the NRL? Where does Fraser start on this one.

What have the Ergon Energy Broncos ever done for the NSWRL/ARL/NRL? From the moment the scum entered the competition they have been a self centered evil organisation that does not care about the game or the growth of the game in Brisbane and Queensland. Who could forget the news limited Broncos starting the rebel competition because Ribot didn't get a few things going his way? Who could forget that when the South Queensland Crushers, a second Brisbane side entering the comp in 1995, Broncos complained and did everyone to ruin that sides chances in developing itself into a powerhouse? Being the news limited scum they are, news limited owning the 1 paper up here, being pro-bronco and anti-crusher. FFS the Broncos didnt want the GOLD COAST to come into the comp in 2007.

The BRL had 10 sides in 1987. TEN. Teams with history, Valleys, Souths, Brothers etc. Crowds of 5000-10000. Why was there a need to bring a new artificial side? To this day, there is still only 1 team in Brisbane to this day. This aint anybody elses fault but the WOW Broncos who just want that monopoly on a city of 2 million. Greed. Power. Money. Was NSWRL admitting the Broncos in the single worst decision ever made by the NSWRL? Within 6 years they WANTED TO START THEIR OWN BLOODY COMP!!!!!!

We all know, realistically, there should be at least 2-3 sides in Brisbane. Anybody else want add anything else as to why Brisbane are the scummiest scum of the scum (After Manly)?

Whilst I wouldn't mind seeing another team up this way, it would be pretty hard for another team to compete with the Broncos at this point. (by compete I obviously don't mean on the field, lol)

Sentiment is agreed with, but the BRL was NOT drawing crowds of 5000-10000 consistently in 1987, and hadn't been for some time. No club was in a position to compete financially with the NSWRL clubs.

The NSWRL chose a private bid when they should have bankrolled possibly three QRL run clubs - One for the Northside, the Southside and Ipswich.

That's history, and nothing can be done now.

if you had a monopoly you wouldn't want competition nearby either - thats not scummy - its business you doofus. you talk like the Broncos made all the competition go away, when clearly its the decision of the NRL and big business support to back it.

there's not sufficient support for a second team among the public in Brisbane - except from whinging southerners like yourself that live up here.

you remind me of whinging pommies - move over here and want to change it to suit yourself.

piss off back to nsw...

The reason a private consortium was given the initial Brisbane license is that Poker Machines were illegal in QLD (Goss introduced them in 1992), and Poker Machine financed clubs was the only community based model the NSWRL knew, so they figured they may as well let private owners bare the risk. This is also the reason that the initial Gold Coast club was based out of the Tweed Heads.

But, as others have pointed out, what's done is done.

Adding an additional team to Brisbane is just diluting the current market, and potentially limiting the ability to reach new locations.

SE-QLD will be able to sustain another team in ~ 10 years time, and the addition of a new team will bring many benefits. Basing a new team primarily out of Lang Park would be a mistake however.

SE-QLD is set to boom over the next 17 years. It is the fastest growing region in the country, with the current population of 2.7m to rise by over 50% to over 4m - a population greater than Melbourne - by 2022.

The population of the Sunshine Coast reached 300k last year, and is projected to be in the vicinity of 430k to 520k by 2026 - exactly where the Gold Coast currently is (population of 527k, 2007 figure).

A Sunshine Coast team will not just benefit the local community, but strengthen other clubs as well. Broncos V Titans/Cowboys are already sell-out blockbusters that bring in huge revenue for the club hosting the match and the league in general via media rights - Brisbane V Gold Coast out-rated the Olympics last year - and almost NOTHING out rates the Olympics.

You add a 4th QLD club and the number of QLD derby games are doubled from 6 to 12. The draw should be scheduled so that at least one game is played in SE-QLD each weekend, and if the Gold Coast and SE-QLD both play 2-3 home games out of Suncorp, the venue would host 16-18 NRL games a year - almost one every week. Once the NRL draw is completely written prior to the start of the season, any Titans/Sunshine Coast home games to be played at Suncorp should be held on a Sunday afternoon to assist people wishing to travel into Brisbane.

Add to that the media saturation and hype generated in the lead up to derby games, the number of QLD raised rugby league players in the NRL and SL, and the fact that the Broncos, Titans and Cowboys are all profitable and turning away sponsors, and a 3rd SE-QLD team becomes a very attractive proposition - just don't base it out of Brisbane.

Except in this case the business is Rugby League, not the Broncos.

there's not sufficient support for a second team among the public in Brisbane
Let me emphasise this astonishing quote again: there's not sufficient support for a second team among the public in Brisbane

1.96 million can only support 1 team? And all this crap about heartland and demanding grand finals and killing Sydney clubs? Funny, because Melbourne looks like doing a good job with one team with 3 million League haters. Or, only 1 million people can support 4 clubs if they are in Townsville, Newcastle, Canberra and the Gold Coast.

The Crushers proved that in normal circumstances it would work. And smaller AFL cities have 2 teams each - and each time the second team came after the first was well established.

- except from whinging southerners like yourself that live up here.

you remind me of whinging pommies - move over here and want to change it to suit yourself.

piss off back to nsw...
......where many clubs thrive to give the NRL a life. I know many like you have the Brisbane mentality - ie one club per 2 million people - so lets hack the crap out of Sydney clubs becuase we are paranoid - but do you merge the Warriors, Titans, Raiders and Cowboys because their base populations add up to 2 million as well?

CC and Perth will be the next entrants. Yet a 2nd Brisbane side is the no brainer.

You are dwelling in the past, get over it.
Brisbane already has a team, any more QLD teams should be from other regions like Ipswich, CQ, SC.

So teams should be formed on the basis of GPS location, and have nothing to do with resources, population, markets etc?

There are 3 maccas in Port Macquarie, but none in Birdsville. Obviously the best thing to do would move one to Birdsville and kill the other one.

another Brisbane team would work but you have to find a "point of difference" for the new club from the BRoncos. Here the WCE are masive but seen a the rich persons club, mainly attracting fans from the Northern burbs. They cleverly introduced teh Dockers as the working mans team and aimed at people from the Southern part of the city. The rivallary worked well and now both teams attract 30,000+ and turn a profit,

Yes from memory it was approx 7-9 years. The short answer is they will protect their monopoly at all costs, even to the detriment of the game, while allowing other clubs to suffer. If the NRL was set up, using Brisbanes business model as an example we would have a 4-5 team comp. Bris, Syd, Newc, Melb & maybe Townsville.

every team drawing decent crowds in modern stadia and making a profit??
