Why don't the refs keep the markers straight

All teams, all games, all refs. Is there some reason they don't bother?

It’s a definite defensive strategy against teams with hookers that like to run or kick from dummy half. Bennett employed this effectively over the last few seasons at Souths.

needs to be enforced but need a high profile coach to whine about it or some media blowups for it to happen

Then the refs will enforce it for three or four weeks, only against lower rated sides though, and then it will all be forgotten about until the next "crackdown".

Also, stop tackled players standing up and stepping to the side to make the markers no longer square.

to be honest I think it the attacking player plays the ball off the mark then the ref calls it and no defenders can be called offside on the next play. Watch this problem quickly disappear.

Because the best coaches completely focus on their defence, partly so they can constantly cheat. Split markers, slowing the ruck, offside. None of these are a problem when you can defend. A ref isn't going to penalise every tackle and they sure aren't going to use the sinbin against the better teams.

On the flip side, I'd like to see refs actually penalise for interfering with the markers. The amount of times where you see the man playing the ball holding onto the Jersey or leg of a marker/tackler to stop them from either getting to marker or getting out of marker to make the next tackle is ridiculous.

Or just make it a penalty like it used to be. These days they can walk off the mark and only risk being asked to go back and play it again.

I haven't noticed it being more of an issue than it has been in previous seasons. They only need to be penalised if they get involved in the play and for the most part the referees have been doing this.

Yep. Or like how if they take a quick tap with a player in front of them they just tell them they have to wait rather than calling the infringement. They've made the referees give the team in possession so much leeway it's kind of ridiculous.

Its funny when you see the second marker put his hand on back of the 1st marker then stand an arms length to one side, like that's ok! My other pet hate is second marker standing 3-5m behind the 1st marker. Get up close merkins.

My pet hate is when the bloke playing the ball steps forward, essentially nudging the first marker in a position where he's no longer square

The NRL completely bottled it in 2018 when they bowed to Rothfield, Gould and co. If they persisted with the hard-line stance and kept blowing penalties like they did the first half of the season, we'd have a much better sport right now.

In the lead up to Manly's first try on the weekend, the Manly player climbed over the tackler, moved 2m forward, effectively making the marker the dummy half adn the dummy half just ran straight through where the marker should have been. Happens every game.

Why don't these incompetant painted on eyes referees do their job consistently correct?
Calling players by their first name and mate is very unprofessional. All players should be address as the number on thier back...thats it. You are not his mate or coach.
Coaching and warning the elite players not to commit a penalty and not to stand offside is very unprofessional. Are they the referee or the coach on the field ?

A good referee should be heard but never noticed or remember for any on the field calls.

Most of these referees just couldn't make it playing the game and end up wanting the attention on the field as a inconsistent, unprofessional referee.

I've often wondered why they call out to tell a player he's offside. Let him make the tackle and penalise him if he can't get onside himself.

Because they are under pressure by the NRL to let the game flow. No point having a go at the refs when they are only doing what their boss tells them to do. Their life would be a heck of a lot easier if they were allowed to ref to the rules only!

It sickens me that I agree with you...
