Why is Matthew Elliott such a terrible coach?

The Warriors have been in a downward spiral since late 2011. Elliot was never going to change that in three rounds... indeed, he may not ever change it. But I'll still give the guy a chance. Anyone who pretends to hang themselves with their tie at a press conference is worth a shot in my books. Absolutely crack up guy.

The Warriors desperately needed a Craig Bellamy type coach, instead they got David Brent.

Pretty much this.

Wayne Bennett is also on record saying this is also why Allan Langer wouldn't make a good NRL Coach.

What an ego. Give Langer, hell even Craig Coleman the 13 internationals Bennett had at his disposal and I dare say a few others may have forged a good coaching career during the 90's.

Whatever you say, random no name on a forum who has never coached a first grade game in his life

He's a true snake oil salesman. He could probably sell water to a whale. Only Gus had the intelligence to see through the idiots bullshit. Unfortunately the Warriors admin didn't.

I'm sick of that ridiculous perception that the Raiders sides he coached "didn't have the cattle". That's absoulte garbage. The squads of that time had plenty of talent.
the swindle of the century for sure. he's lived off those small achievements at canberra his entire career.

Take a look at the backline he selected in round one. Go thru each player, then imagine them standing next to each other and defending. That is why he cant coach. He has absolutely no idea. I took one look at his selection and laughed at it. They couldnt tackle me.

Hagen is probably another example, in fact there's many you could put in that category and none of them were very successful. Elliot, Hagen, Taylor, Fittler, Brown etc

Hagan won a comp at least. He could also understand how you workout who stands where, how positions relate to each other etc. Technically he was very sound as a coach, he failed to manage the respect of his unit and nobody since has been able to get it right at parra either. Newcastle, he ran into the ground, no doubt at all.

Elliot's technical side is the problem, its diabolical, i would be alarmed having him teach my son about the game, he clearly has no idea.

Have you seen the list of injuries at the Warriors? They're basically on last man standing stakes. Who you see in the team is practically a combination of who is available and who could play at a pinch.

As far as the backline, Leuluai's a good defender, Neilsen has no attack yet still played for Queensland, they're not that bad.

This is spot on
Elliott does not have the luxury of a full squad at the moment . Although I'm not too thrilled with his appointment & dubious about his game knowledge atm I'm prepared to give him a shot.

Until we have more player options available it's not realistic to judge his coaching ability. Very shortly he will have to step up and make some hard decisions. If he's faking it will soon become clear then the heat goes on.

the point is, have you seen any changes from last year in terms of the teams strategy, commitment, techniques or results - short answer - no.

He`s had a whole pre-season and trial matches to change something.... the only radical change in the side is Taylor to hooker - they are still fumbling the ball and playing with their heads down and with lno eadership.... in fact i dear say, simon mannering, our captain is having a shocking season so far.... its a telling sign and so early in the year to be showing it....

i fear this is going to turn into a SK saga.... warrior fans - brace yourself for a long season.....

He'd make a hell of a used car dealer, thats for sure
Could sell ice to the eskimos!

As for why he is so rubbish? Basically he makes things too complicated, no one can follow what the hell he's trying to instuct them to do.

Ive said since about year 3 of his 5 year stint in canberra, the man's future is in media. He's hilarious, and genuinely one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. He'd be fantastic in the media as a colour commentator or on a panel like the footy show... but as a coach he's f**king ordinary
