Why this NRL ad is simply the worst

I have always thought the pga ones are awesome, they are cheap to make and you could make 5 or 6 NRL related ones and play them at different times of the year...

surely the marketing geniuses with their porshes and pony tails could dream up some alternate scenes featuring our best players doing stuff.

beats last years one by a mile, journo has a bug up its ass like the majority of them. Nothing else to bag about nrl atm so them releasing something was going to cop critizism regardless of how good it is. Getting seriously sad

yep, everyone's entitled to their opinion, but the SMH might've decided that because of the lack of negative stories around NRL at the moment they'd publish a piece about the ad that takes that approach, ie - there's something wrong when there's nothing wrong....

Knowing the NRL's luck, the rodeo clown will turn out to be a prominent member of Stormfront or something.

Julian Lee is the SMH Media & Marketing journalist, hence why the article is more less an op-ed piece. They do this every year.

I think the article is more or less right, its one of the most uninspiring ads I've seen from a sporting body.

However it’s the ad we had to have. It doesn’t work against the game, but it doesn't really work for it. It’s just a cheap, safe public service announcement and allows the NRL and its media buyers to spend big and not worry about controversy derailing 2010's marketing strategy.

Hopefully next year, barring more incidents of mass player stupidity, we'll get an ad that actually promotes the game in a way that is actually relevant to this decade.

I'm glad I'm not alone here. This is the sought of ad that comes out of research. This is the ad you make when you don't have have an idea - or allowed to have one. It does feel like a government department ad and I can't see it pulling in too many new fans either. What are they seeing in this ad that they haven't seen before? It's wallpaper people.

It reminds me of the Microsoft ad for Windows7, where the viewer is given a sense of ownership.

"it's my windows, i created it!"

its not bad, but it wont win any advertising awards (well it shouldnt anyway!)

I was at gosford last night and before the second game they played working class man....it was amazing how many people in the crowd were signing it, i think most of them without even thinking about it.

Working Class man should be the NRL's anthem

They did the multiple ads a few years back when they had the different sets of kids re-enacting big moments from the previous year, ended up being one of the least memorable IMO.

You've missed the point, those ads were pretty much the same, throwing the eggs into one basket again. I agree, that was a dodgy campaign, but they were hardly different ads, they were basically the same nonsense. I'm talking about using different styles of music with different aspects of the game. Big hits, great tries, fan emotion, last minute wins and bloopers etc. having their own ads with their own music and/or narrative.

Exactly, those ads are good, so are some of the NFL ones. The PGA didn't make this one ad for a whole season either, there was a series of them. The NRL is useless at selling the game.

I didn't mind the current ad, we just need more of them and a bit of variety.

Just noticed on One HD that the AFL merkins are still running last years ad. To insinuate that their nufty players (see Australia's Greatest Athlete and cutie for validation) are better at all the sports in it is pretty weak.

The 4 best ad campaigns were, in order:

The Centenary ad where Wing passes to Ron Coote
What you get is what you see,
The Tooheys "How do you feel" featuring Manly v Parra
Simply the Best

i didnt mind the ad either, keep it simple, but have a message nd get us pumped...now, if they would just go back to showing them in adelaide like in the 90's.

greatest ad campaign Ive seen was when I was in USA for NFL playoffs...

Don Cheadle is brilliant and cool without trying
the ads are simple, to the point, but just plain...cool.

5 seconds - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2w40wqvdKCc&feature=related

roman numerals - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=io6VyzWpHkk&feature=related

impossible - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMpG3jPlwec&feature=related

i can easily see someone like Hugh Jackman (Manly supporter) doing something like this.

The centenary and Tooheys ads were good but I was never a fan of the Tina Turner ads.

The success of the Tina Turner ads was always overrated as well, they were around during the period where we went from a Sydney comp to including Brisbane and Newcastle. The extra ratings and crowds were always going to happen with a change like that. They may have had an impact but not quite the impact some people believe.

Plus the homophobe in me didn't like listening to a song with sexual overtures to men while watching an ad for the footy. Those ads were done purely and simply to attract more female fans, they may have done that but most of the extra fans came from the inclusion of the Broncos and Knights.
