What is it with Hollywood and f**king remakes at the moment.

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/entertainment/sydney-confidential/moves-to-remake-1991-surf-action-masterpiece-point-break-the-culmination-of-hollywoods-addiction-to-pointless-reboots/story-fni0cvc9-1226838074766

Moves to remake 1991 surf action masterpiece Point Break the culmination of Hollywood’s addiction to pointless reboots
DAVID CAMPBELL THE DAILY TELEGRAPH FEBRUARY 26, 2014 9:36AM

Sydney actor Luke Bracey wins key role

Former Home and Away star will reprise Keanu Reeves role

POINT Break should be hands-off. It is an iconic action movie that shouldn’t be tampered with. So why the hell is Hollywood funding a remake?

This film is in my top five and gets dusted off a few of times a year much to my wife’s annoyance

Imagine my horror when I learned a remake was on the cards. And now Australian actor Luke Bracey has been cast in one of the starring roles.

For those unfamiliar with the 1991 masterpiece, it follows the rookie FBI hotshot Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves) as he risks his life surfing and skydiving to track down a group of masked bank robbers.

The criminals end up being a group of surfers, led by a very Zen Patrick Swayze as Bodhi, hitting banks in a bid to fund an everlasting summer.

The fast-paced action, Swayze’s brilliant performance and the terrible Australian accents by Australian actors in the final scene at our very own Bells Beach make Point Break unforgettable.

The late Swayze is barely even cold yet and already Hollywood has set its sights on a remake.

Slated for release in 2015, Gerard Butler has signed on for the role of Bodhi and Bracey will take over Reeves’ Johnny Utah.

The new Point Break will be just the latest film out of Hollywood in recent years which focuses on remaking a flick that can hardly be considered old.

The Batman, Superman and Spiderman franchises have all released reboots, remakes and new stories of late with varying success. But at least we can understand why.

With cinematic technology and special effects continuing to race ahead in leaps and bounds these superhero films, with all their powers and super villains, are the perfect vehicles to test out the new toys.

But with a Point Break remake we can finally ask, what’s the point? How can a film about masked bank robbers surfing and skydiving be made better?

The picture might look clearer but any remake would struggle to match the stunts and action that made the original the cult film it has become today.

Bracey, who became recognisable in Australia through his stint on Home and Away, is still trying to make a name for himself in Hollywood following his breakthrough role in 2013’s G.I Joe: Retaliation. He has an excuse for signing up.

But who knows what Butler was thinking when he agreed to follow Swayze? He must surely know any performance he gives will never live up to the Swayze legend.

We can only assume the Point Break remake is a movie studio’s grab for money rather than a legitimate investment in retelling the story.

Point Break 2015 will be doomed by the huge shadow cast by Swayze and the fact many followers of the original are still only in their 20s and 30s.

Hollywood should heed words from the original movie itself as it continues to push on with the ridiculous idea of a Point Break remake.

As Johnny Utah’s FBI boss Ben Harp (John C. McGinley) says: “You know nothing. In fact, you know less than nothing. If you knew that you knew nothing, then that would be something, but you don’t.”

I just got Point Break the other week, after not seeing it for years. Love it.

Pity it has to be ruined.

The original can't be ruined.
It's there forever.

I don't see how a remake of a great movie can diminish the original in any way.
Just don't see the remake.

I don't think there's much of a reason to remake it, but you never know...it might end up being good. I actually really liked the Robocop remake.

Why can't the just make it as a sequel?
You can use the same premise, just different names for characters, and have a cameo by Keanu... I. Am an F. B. I. Agent!

Who greenlights this shit???

Did they not get the memo when the Total Recall and Oldboy remakes tanked?

The people who want to make money do.
They don't care about what movies they make, they care about it making them some coin. I doubt they want to make a bad movie on purpose, but a recognised title is the easiest way to get people through the doors.

Total Recall made almost $200 million. From a production budget of $125 million that probably works out to it breaking even. Not a hit, but didn't exactly tank either. Although on this one I think the recognised title may have worked against it.

Oldboy tanked because it wasn't a title that was well known to the majority of moviegoers and it was rated R in the US. I don't think it was marketed all that well in the US either. Spike Lee isn't exactly the biggest drawing director around, and Josh Brolin has headed up some terrible movies lately.

What a pointless film to remake.

I don't see the point unless they can improve on it somehow or have a different take on the story (like Robocop did).

If they are just going to do the exact same story with the same plot points and characters then it really is pretty pointless from a moviegoer's point of view. At least when Fast And The Furious remade it they changed the setting and characters.

But who knows, maybe there are a whole heap of 14-22 year olds who have heard about the old one and how awesome it is but won't watch it because it's an "old" movie and would like totally watch it if it was set today.

Gerard Butler in 300 gives him a lifetime pass from me. But I haven't really seen him in too much else.

If they want to do a different take on the story they might as well just give it a different name and characters.

Robocop was a generic action movie.

I honestly haven't heard of any 14-22 year olds that won't watch 90s movies cause they are 'old'.

I don't see the point in remaking 90s movies when they can hardly improve on it. There are plenty of films from the 30s-60s that could be a lot different, and relevant, with a modern take. Godzilla for example. A film that was great in it's own right but can also benefit from a modern remake, as this year's film is looking to do.

No one can come near Swayze in that movie, he f**king owned.

Not happy with this, but in saying that I'll probably watch it and complain the whole time.

I was making a bit of a joke when I said that bit.
I thought the Robocop remake was a little bit smarter than your average generic action movie - sure it was no Matrix and it didn't re-invent the wheel or anything, but I did think it was a cut above most actioners. I think that if it weren't for the original then it would be seen in a much better light.

I think if it weren't for the original it would have flopped big time, if it was even made.

The original movie made me lol.

The surf sequences were filmed at Bells Beach in Vic and in the movie they had palm trees every where.

If you've ever been to Bells you will see there isn't a palm tree in sight and they would literally freeze their nuts off. If you're a surfer the movies was a joke.

most of this generation have no idea about anything that happened more than 15 years ago.

it's wont be a remake, it will be a new movie.

This is pretty much how I feel.

Was the same with total recall.

Lack of chick with 3 tits in the remake just didn't make the grade, although having Kate beckinsale and Jessica Biel in it nearly made up for it.
