Sydney is a city of 4.5 million.. Newcaslt is 500,000..

Sydney has roughly 600,000 people for each of its teams.. Still 100,000 more people than the pop of newcaslte... And a lot less than townsville who has a pop of 120,000
Different demographics
And are you suggesting that there are 600 000 people in the eastern suburbs?

OK, here's my theory on the question regarding fluctuations as requested:

Basically I think it comes down to the timing of the games and everyone's personal preferences (and possibly associated commitments). As part of my thesis I've taken into consideration all Roosters home games since the beginning of 2001. Some basic assumptions have been made. Any Roosters v Rabbitohs game has been considered a home game. Any game played on a Thursday has been represented as a Friday game. Any game played on a Monday has been represented as a Sunday game.

Firstly, a breakdown of all crowd figures showing day of the week since 2001:
2004
----

Friday
------
26465
23118

Saturday
--------
11789

Sunday
------
16516
26246 (Long weekend)
11167
10078

2003
----

Friday
------
24172
19124
26014
17136
15842

Saturday
--------
17148
11921

Sunday
------
9854
14155
9123
11201
9986
18726

2002
----

Friday
------
35316
15614
13763 (Newcastle)
20588 (Thursday)
9648 (Parramatta draw)

Saturday
--------
7193
7012
9723

Sunday
------
7318
15891 (Monday - Public Holiday)
9172
8240
18186
15629

2001
----

Friday
------
14112
21126
9185

Saturday
--------
10124
6432

Sunday
------
7426
15251
9878 (Monday)
9857
10417
10147
20117
18889

Summary of figures:
Average Friday crowd: 19414.9
Number of Friday games: 15
7 of 15 games had 20,000+
4 of 15 games less than 15,000
High crowd figure: 35316
Low crowd figure: 9185

Average Saturday crowd: 10167.8
Number of Saturday games: 8
4 of 8 games less than 10,000
High crowd figure: 17148
Low crowd figure: 6432

Average Sunday crowd: 13061.25
Number of Sunday games: 24
2 of 24 games more than 20,000
14 of 24 games less than 12,000
High crowd figure: 26246
Low crowd figure: 7318

Basically, it appears that the majority of fans prefer a Friday night game whereas Saturday is least favourite. Although there were a couple of suggestions, it appears the fluctuations discussed coincide with the day of the week the game is on.

I don't profess to have the ability to delve into the psyche of all of these fans and understand why this is so, but this is what the statistics show.

Oops...forgot to mention that I only used regular season games - no finals series figures were considered.

As for me personally, I prefer the Sunday games, particularly when there's 3 games on. Friday night would be my next choice, but I never go with the family because it's generally too cold for the kids and by the time I get home, it's well after 11:00pm which is no good since the kids have sporting commitments first thing Saturday morning. If I can get myself a Kitchen Pass and get to a Friday game, I'll go but all the planets have to align themselves (ie wife not working etc.).

That said, I'm keen as mustard for the next home game and I'll be there with my Knights-loving mate. Looking forward to getting him as close to the chook-pen as possible. If we don't get 25,000+ it'll be disappointing. Let's hope there's plenty of Knights fans that jump on the bus/train and make the journey down - keep that fluctuating trend happening!

Contrary to popular (and ignorant) opinion, not all Rooster supporters drive around in their Beamers, sipping caffe lattes in the diamond studded shoes. Speaking for myself, I can't afford to go to every home game - love to, but not financially viable. Therefore, at the start of the season I earmark six home games for the season and these limited games are never going to be against a team that is struggling, 'cause I'd rather spend the money to see a close clash rather than a thrashing.

Oh, and this has got to be one of the lamest, most inane excuses for a Rooster bashing ever.

m0j0 - Thanks, I was actually satisfied with the options given to me before I went home from work last night. But you did take it that extra step further!
Penelope - I understand the budget thing, I mean the demographic of my team (Souths) definitely is a budgeting demographic!
You know had the game been against someone like Souths who are clearly no good, I wouldn't have even questioned the low crowd, I think it's just that this is one of the most recent grand final replays possible, I just kind of figured that no matter how the Warriors were travelling, there'd be a decent crowd.
Thank you to the people who were able to be civil and have a proper conversation.

Manly, Dragons, Tigers, Sharks, Roosters, Souths, Bulldogs, Eels, Panthers.
That's 9 Sydney teams.
4.5 million population.
divided by the 9 teams.
500,000. The same as Newcastle.
Also, Sydney teams have to compete with Waratahs, Swans, Something other than games of Rugby League actually happen in sydney....

Don't get me wrong, the Knights should be proud of their crowds, but do the figures right and compare apples with apples.

the BULLDOGS are similar to the roosters. at the 5 or 6 games at TELSTRA STADIUM we average about 26000 but when we play at the SHOWGROUND we average about 10000 (i reckon its that low because of how sh*t the ground is)
