Gareth Widdop’s reported request for a release from the Dragons is a bitter blow to Paul McGregor’s premiership plans for 2019.
Club great Mark Gasnier admits Widdop’s is the hardest position to fill given the skipper’s influence on the team.

“He is a hard one to replace because in the past two or three years he has taken control of the team,” Gasnier told Foxsports.com.au.

Widdop requests release

“I think it showed this year that when he didn’t play there ... the Dragons weren’t the same team.

“There are a few options already within the roster that could step up, but it is not just a little change, you are talking about the captain of your club and your chief playmaker.

“If there is a position or a player on the Dragons’ roster that you don’t want to lose, well this holds the most disruption to the squad.”

Gasnier said he was shocked by the reports given his experiences with Widdop over the past few seasons.

However, he conceded if the release has been offered, the club needs to act fast, with the 2019 campaign just around the corner.

Widdop is on a deal reportedly worth around $1 million a season, which would free up a lot of cap space to chase a star like Shaun Johnson, who has been released by the Warriors.

However, Gasnier does not believe Widdop would leave the club without the Dragons being able to secure a suitable replacement.

“I don’t think he would leave the club in a position where he packs up and goes and leaves the Dragons with a big hole in their cap,” he said.

“There is so much expectation from the players within the club. I know they really believe they have the roster to do some damage in 2019, so I don’t think he would want to bring that all undone.

“I don’t think he would say, give me a release or I’m not going to play anyway.”

Johnson has been linked to a number of clubs including the Sharks, Roosters and the Raiders.

However if he were to be interested in joining the Dragons, Gasnier believes Johnson would be an ideal fit.

“Without a doubt Johnson would do well,” Gasnier said.

“I think Johnson’s game would be very well suited because there is some structure at the Dragons, but McGregor would give him a free licence.

“The Dragons do have a really good pack and with good back-rowers next to him in Tariq Sims and Tyson Frizell, there are two players that have played Origin.

“That would really play into his hands and I think that is someone they would have a look at and see what sort of money and terms he is after.”

If the Dragons fail to secure a player of the calibre of Johnson to replace Widdop, it would put extra pressure on million-dollar man Ben Hunt to direct the team.

Hunt struggled last season in games where Widdop was forced out through injury, but Gasnier thinks he has the potential to step up if he has the right support.

“Sometimes it can make someone like Benny Hunt’s game go to the next level, but it could go either way,” Gasnier admitted.

“It could affect him or he could go to another level and really take hold of the team, but it depends on the replacements.

“I would still have them up in my top eight, but you have to be brutally honest and if you take Widdop out of that team, their attack is nowhere near as good.”

Should the Dragons lose Widdop and miss out on signing Johnson, Gasnier warns the club should take their time to sign the right player.

However, Gasnier said he sympathised with Widdop, having spent time playing rugby union in France before returning to of home.

“I definitely know what it is like to get homesick having lived overseas and it was not as long as him,” Gasnier said.

“You can never put yourself in someone’s shoes and living overseas gets hard at times.

“Anytime I have spoken to Gareth, I was always of the assumption that even when he retires he would be staying around in Australia.

“He is on the Northern Beaches of Wollongong and he has always loved it, so it does come as a surprise, but you never know.

“He has come back from a tour with the England side, with the Test series against New Zealand, so that probably sparked the homesickness.”

If he wants to play next season and get a release in 2020 I would hope the club gets rid of him now and put a large transfer fee on him.
I doubt whether Widdop breaking his contract would sit well with the first grade squad.
I hope this is just a beat up to sell newspapers.

Surely the Club should put out a statement re Widdop without the usual Doustisms
Exactly this. If it is not true why doesnt The Club, Widdop or his management squash it straight away again for the Fans or tell us it is true, instead of Tariq Sims posting on twitter it is BS...only then to remove saying I removed it in respect to Widdop and still say it is BS.
The silence is deafening and inuendo annoying to all Dragon supporters. Again poor management and disregard to the soul of the club. (i.e. the kids and all Dragon supporters).
We dont need to know what is going or may happen..just tell us true or not he has approached and then give us update to result when official. Is all that so hard.?

Really disappointing but I must admit I had concerns over Widdop due to his shoulder and how it will stand up going forward so perhaps a blessing in disguise... Believe Johnson will sign with Cronulla so next best bet is Norman or here’s Fields chance ...

Now that the media wind has cleared somewhat it would appear that OUR Gareth will not be leaving until the end of season ‘19 , thank goodness . That will if anything spur the Dragons on to greater heights if anything , as his teammates will most certainly wish to have him go out as a winner and next year they may do just that .

With respect to those whom are hailing Corey Norman as a replacement - you gotta to be bluudy joking ! Not in the same ball park , an highly overrated player that cannot even force his way into a SOO team . Hopefully another player that is capable of forming a good partnership with his half will come onto the market and then our boardroom ‘ brains trust ‘ will have the money to make a quality acquisition to replace Widdop .

F**k. Gareth is our best player. A few would disagree but they are wrong.

Have Norman and Hunt played together at the Bronco's? I think they have, if so that could be the best fit for the Saints getting Norman to replace Hunt. I heard Saints are interested in Mitchell Moses as Widdop's replacement which is probably the worst option out of Johnson, Norman and Moses.

Surely not Moses. How do our recruitment people come up with such stupid decisions.

St George Illawarra star Gareth Widdop has no set plans for UK return
NOVEMBER 28, 2018

Don't despair Dragons fans, Gareth Widdop's manager is adamant the star five-eighth will be at St George Illawarra next season.

In fact, he may not leave at all.

Reports their captain wanted to quit the Dragons because of homesickness sent the Red V faithful into a frenzy on Wednesday. It came just hours after Shaun Johnson was released from the final year of his New Zealand Warriors deal.

But Widdop's agent Paul Sutton told The Daily Telegraph the England international had not asked for a release hasn't set a date for a return to the UK.

Widdop has told Saints officials he does harbour a desire to one day return to his homeland but hasn't indicated when.

Sutton said Widdop would have to give the Dragons at least a year's notice for the club to secure a new, elite halfback.

The most likely option would be Widdop leaving St George Illawarra with one year remaining on his contract in 2021.

"Gareth will definitely be at St George Illawarra next year," Sutton told The Daily Telegraph. "He hasn't asked for a release, he may see out the entire contract. At some point in the future he expressed an interest in returning to England."

The 29-year-old has been in Australia since he was 16 and St George Illawarra officials would need some strong convincing to allow Widdop to walk away early if being homesick was the reason cited.

The Dragons also know that freeing Widdop after next season means they would be going head-to-head in the market with the Sydney Roosters with Cooper Cronk retiring, in searching for a quality half.

Before signing his most recent contract just last year, which was worth $1 million a season, Halifax-born Widdop did express am ambition to return home given he joined the Melbourne Storm system at 16.

"It's not immediate, it may be never. It's just something in the back of his mind", a friend close to Widdop said.

"He will be there next year. The club doesn't have to let him go and he certainly hasn't drawn a line in the sand."

"It's like three guys sitting around a table having a beer and one says he might go to England, and that's it. It's all got out of hand."

Speculation Widdop wanted out alerted several English clubs, who have had internal discussions about moves to recruit the No.6.

Huddersfield has revealed an interest in Widdop if he suddenly wanted out, while Hull FC and Wigan are other likely suitors.

"If he's available, we would obviously be interested and we have a marquee spot available," said Giants coach and former Dragons hooker, Simon Woolford.

Widdop once described finishing his career in England as a fairytale.

The 29-year-old did not play in the recent England-New Zealand Test series due to a shoulder injury.

Possm... You're again aligning with anti-Millward ideas to suit your agenda against him haha.

There is absolutely no evidence that the target is Mitchell Moses. Slippery has no idea, most people out there have no idea. In fact the overwhelming consensus is that Norman is that target.

In fact we don't even know for sure if Widdop is even leaving yet!!!

Sorry Tom,

Couple of things.. How do know slippery has no idea ? How is his opinion different to the so called overwhelming opinion that Norman is coming ?

The only part of your post that I agree with is your last sentence.

Widdop hasn't left and we don't know when / if he will.

I'm not insulting Slippery, he's only passing on things that he's heard, probably most of it on the internet. When I say he has no idea, I don't mean his Footy IQ or anything like that haha, I mean he doesn't know anything about what's going on with our targets. I have no idea either.
We've been linked to so many players in the past, and of course Moses' name has popped up because he's a player who's future is uncertain. But WTC has posted previously in Jubilee Avenue that Corey Norman is the target, and i'm taking his word as gospel given his impeccable track record.

Further to that, Possm chose to take Slippery's word as gospel because nobody really wants Moses and that align's with his negativity towards Ian Millward.
