Will Kyle Flanagan be a good #6 or #9 for the Dragons?

Your 18s or 19s are our 6s.
We have no other options, hopefully Kyle does a job, I think he can.
Usually 18 will be a forward (for concussion substitution). Normally coaches put some up and coming youngster at that position to get game time. So if Vokeman fires early and makes number 6 his own, then Flanno will be our 14. If Vokeman has to do a year of apprenticeship, then Flanno will be our 6. Of course during State of Origin Vokeman and Flanno will cover 6 and 7. We also have Taylor and Mulheisen from lower grades as backup. Now Flanno's First Grade career reads as follows:

Sharks 9
Roosters 20 (This was under Mr no Nonsense Trent Robinson)
Bulldogs 50

Finally, He is not Tom Deardon (which Flanno Snr was aiming at getting) but he is a decent First Grader.

I'd say, we made a big mistake in not letting Hunt go when he so desperately wanted to leave. If there was not Hunt, there most probably would be another marquee players and Kyle in our halves pairing. Who both want to play for the Big Red V.

We could start fresh with a new captain and a team buying into what Flanno is selling.

You guys are in a bizarre situation.
Your number one halves pairing, Hunt and Flanju, are both playing in their second best positions, with both of them having their best position as being no.9.
I disagree re Hunt. His best position week to week in the NRL is a running half but could fill in at 9 for bits and pieces. He excels at 9 in origin cause he plays up to 40 mins at top pace a game sharing with a better 9 as is Grant and playing with a top level 13 on field
Unless you want all hookers to become like most front rowers playing half a game at NRL level Hunt would not last 60-80 mins week to week as our premium 9 IMO

Yep, you are right BLM01. However, Hunt has had quite a lot of time in the 9 position as you might recall.

Yes DD that is history and reputation only as I have mentioned in other thread. He is mid 30's now. He wont keep pace.

I reckon Flanagan could be a revelation at 9. In fact I think our only chance of being a surprise success in 24 is if Ron Volks earns a spot in the halves and Kyle gets to shine at 9

It's a tricky one. Normally if you have a young half like Volks, it's a good thing if you can pair him with an old hand as the other half/five-eight. But pairing a young bloke with Hunt doesn't seem to work. Neither Sullivan or Amone went well when paired with Hunt, in fact Sullivan seemed to play a lot better when Hunt wasn't there. So I reckon you might be better off with Flanagan in the halves and Hunt at 9.

He's had some good moments for the dogs at 9 but I wouldn't trust him to play more than 30-40mins in that position atm. Imo a better bench impact player, subbing in for liddle. He's still very raw at 9, let him build his craft. He's a promising prospect, has some good instincts in that position.

Sounds like Volk has had opportunity & confidence issues in the halves. Hopefully a change of teams & low expectations allows him to settle into that role at 1st grade level.

I'd do the opposite. Sub Liddle in for Flanno. Liddle has speed and impact but is limited as a crafty dummy half imo. Flanagan could be like a Jeremy Marshall-King

All I can say is if he cant perform at his best / potential with his dad at the helm at NRL level then he wont perform for anyone. This is his best chance and opportunity
I think, despite us not having that much to look forward to this year that Kyle will be one of our shining lights and that he won't let us down whatever position he plays, although I'm betting he owns his 6 jersey (or even better 7)
I know I harp on a bit but I've just watched another game of Kyles' from his stint with the Roosters and saw again what a real competitor he is (I'll put the link below). You need to remember that Trent Robinson saw enough in the young Kyle Flanagan who had played just 9 1st Grade games to hand him the jersey just vacated by none other than Cooper Cronk and to stick with him for the entire year. The Roosters were a top 4 team when Kyle got there and a top 4 team when he left. Their season was cruelled by injury but they still made it deep into the finals and Kyle helped them do it.
This game again features Kyle in the 7 but his usual partner Keary is out injured and Hutchinson is his 5/8. Right from the start you can see Kyle taking charge, telling his troops what to do and where to be, really focused and possessing a natural confidence - pretty cool in just his 23rd top level game. You'll also notice from the get go David Fifita (imo the most overrated player in the NRL) trying to dominate Kyle physically and verbally but Kyle to his credit just takes it in his stride and gets the better of Fifita not only by matching him with great defence but also by showing him up beautifully with his second try assist when he notices Fifita is slow to move up and across Kyle decides to run it on the last, taking it to the line then slipping a great ball to Tupouniua who glides past Fifita to score - a very satisfying moment. Kyle also took on the greater responsibility for kicks in the absence of Keary and did well for the most part. Other things to pay attention to is how often Kyle is there when a break is made or when a try is being scored, backing up and ready for the pass. He was also involved in the lead up to a few of the tries as well as his two try assists. To top it off he kicks 9/10 conversions, half from the sideline.
I don't know why the Roosters let him go, it can't have been for underperforming because from what I've seen he was solid every week. They did have a lot of halves on their books - Kyle, Keary, Hutchinson, Lachie Lam, Joey Manu (who came in for the injured Keary a bit in 2021) as well as the young gun Walker. I bet Robinson kicked himself for letting Kyle go when Keary was ruled out for the season in round 3 of 2021.

Anyway, we (and Kyle) need to just erase his 3 years at the Dogs and look forward to him recapturing the form he showed in 2020 and giving us poor supporters something to smile about.

Round 16 2020, Roosters vs Broncs. It's a bit scrappy but shows us what Kyle can do. You can watch the highlights but you'll miss the Fifita vs Kyle stuff and Kyle's work off the ball.

I watched the match. Had a slightly different take on it.

seemed to me Hutchison did most the kicking and controlling the team. Young Flanno‘s involvement seemed a little low, but he didn’t do much wrong, and did do a number of things well. From this I’d say he could play well with Hunt, and sometimes it’s better not to overplay your hand.

still, I’d like to see
-a little more involvement
-better kicking game
-learn when to pass quick and when to draw (he Had some good examples, but I noticed many times when he did that slow lazy passing that makes it easy for the opposition).

still, he was young and i hope will have a great year.

The game stats have Hutchinson on 3 kicks for 71mtrs and Kyle 8 kicks for 166 mtrs.
I thought Hutchinson was a bit quiet, certainly in the first half. In the 2nd half he came to life a little and got involved in a couple of tries. Maybe he did some organizing on his left side but Kyle ran the show in the middle and on the right, I was watching him closely and saw him pointing and quite vocal to get people into position. Kyle's work with Tupouniua was great, hope he can do that with Su'a or BMM.
I think he'll compliment Hunt really well and if Sloan can get more involved like Teddy we can cause our oppositions a bit of stress.

You sound like his manager. You needed to pass all that info onto the Bulldogs.
He fell off a cliff there?
