Will Pucovski - How far will he go?

The immediate playing future of one-Test opener Will Pucovski is again up in the air after he was hit in the helmet batting for the Victorian second XI and forced to retire hurt.

Pucovski, 25, has suffered 10 previous concussions and taken a raft of breaks from cricket to address his ongoing mental health issues since he made his Test debut against India in 2021.

With the Shield season set to resume next week, and having missed out on a Big Bash contract, Pucovski opened the batting and had scored 43 off 101 balls at Karen Rolton Oval in Adelaide before taking a blow to the helmet which forced him to retire hurt.

That may be the end of it.

How on earth can someone get hit hard on the head that many times? Haven’t seen much of him, but surely there’s big technical issues? Or has it become psychological? Just stop playing them…

I'd say the latter at this point.

That shot looked half hearted. Maybe just trying to keep the ball down on the grass. At best he has edged that into his helmet but looks like he missed it completely.

Seemed to be a very half hearted hook shot, just turning it around the corner rather than really going after it.
At the same time didn't appear to not want to play the shot.

I can't see him playing for Australia again, if you hear him commentating on 7 he seems content with what he's doing.

Yeah he's done. If he can't play short stuff in a second XI game he's got no hope.

Shame. He's talented but he just cannot play chin music

Didn't he once get a concussion kicking a football?

He could probably train the rest of his life to duck/hook and it won't matter much. Everyone gets hit sooner or later and its a lot faster than second grade too.

They are saying Usman has no concussion and the hit he took looked a lot worse than the one Pucovski copped.

How it appears and the impact aren’t the same thing. Regardless he’s had 10+, so just different for him, and as you said earlier as well as technical issues almost certainly psychological/mental ones too. Sad, but hard to see how he can cope at highest levels, everyone knows and they’ll be relentless

What happens if the kid gets seriously hurt or worse on the next hit in terms of duty of care / law suits?

Retire son, dont need it to get that way

Pudding brain for sure. Any healthy bloke should be able to laugh off a hit like that

I wonder how different things would have been if JL didn't screw him over for Kurtis Patterson in the Sri Lanka series 4 years ago.

Pucovski was set to make his debut and they shunted him in the last minute for Patterson.

Things may still be what they are now. But what a sliding doors moment.

Patterson only played 2 tests for Australia.

Looks like he came out and batted out the day:

One-time Test opener Will Pucovski nearly made a century after being cleared of concussion and allowed to resume playing after he was hit in the head while batting in a second XI game on Monday sending shockwaves through the sport.

Pucovski was assessed on the field before he returned to the crease and batted for four more deliveries, but he retired hurt after running a three with partner Nic Maddinson and experiencing dizziness.

Cricket Victoria said Pucovski was cleared of concussion and after a net session he returned to the crease later on the opening day of the match, adding another 46 runs before being dismissed for 89 in a positive sign.

that's good, obviously he's (and everyone else) going to be very concerned about any knock to the head....
