Sharks player has bail refused

By CHARLES MIRANDA
June 22, 2004

CRONULLA Sharks player Jason Williams will wear a uniform of a different kind after a magistrate yesterday refused him bail "for the protection and welfare" of his teammate Jeremy Smith.

Williams sat in prison greens as Sutherland Local Court heard details of his history of violence and his alleged grudge against Smith.

Magistrate Jay Carney said it was not clear what was behind the "bad blood" between the pair but remanded Williams in custody for a future court hearing.

Williams has been charged over two alleged incidents against Smith; maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm in company on June 13 at Miranda and assault on the team bus on February 7.

The court heard Smith was in the toilets of Carmen's nightclub in Miranda when Williams and an unidentified male entered.

Smith made to leave but was allegedly set upon by the unidentified man.

In a statement read to court, Sharks teammate Michael Greenfield said he told Williams not to do "anything stupid" and tried to hold him back but he broke away and joined in the beating.

"I tried to hold on to him but he was too strong," Greenfield said.

The court heard moments before the assault, Williams tapped the unidentified man on the shoulder and said "that's him" before the other set upon Smith. As Smith lay on the ground unconscious, he was allegedly punched and kicked.

On the team bus to Gosford in February, a number of Sharks gave statements about how Williams stood up, walked down the aisle and held Smith's head in his left hand as he punched him in the face with the right.

That matter and another altercation between the pair later at Shark Park was not reported to police by the club.

Mr Carney said Williams – who was supported in court by de facto wife Tamara Pereira and Sharks chaplain the Reverend George Capsis – had already been given five suspended sentences in the past for assaults including domestic violence issues.

Smith's injuries, including a fractured jaw and cheekbone, have ended his season.

He told The Daily Telegraph yesterday he was upset by the case publicity and claims he had spread rumours about Williams and his family. "I will swear on the Bible that I never said anything about him or his child, it's below the belt and not something I would do," he said.

"This has been very hard on my family and myself. I haven't been able to eat or sleep because of the stress. I want my name cleared of all this rubbish and about what's being said about me. I have done nothing wrong."

He said he did not know why Williams did not like him.

This report was published at www.dailytelegraph.com.au

Does he read the newspaper?

Oh well at least Capsis from the Sharks supports him. He's the nicest guy too.

"This has been very hard on my family and myself. I haven't been able to eat or sleep because of the stress. I want my name cleared of all this rubbish and about what's being said about me. I have done nothing wrong."

Out comes the second side. Not that I don't believe him but it is very hard to believe Williams would go out of his way for no reason whatsoever to make Smith's life a living hell.

I wish we had some concrete answers and this whole situation resolved.

The Bulldogs' response was absolutely disgraceful

Letting the players remain anonymous and therefore implicating every single one of them

In my opinion it was the wrong response

i dont agree SS

the club showed due loyalty to their players and as it turns out there were no charges laid

the club showed due loyalty to their players

all the while maintaining that something very wrong had occurred against the club's code of conduct and saying the whole time that they were going to fine the shit out of them

though i do agree with you to some extent

Does he read the newspaper?

More than likely.

However, you are not allowed to sit and rule over cases of which you have outside knowledge (i.e. have read about them or heard about them on tv).
It can cause prejudice.

The club risked compromising itself earlier in the year, when it DIDN'T report the assault in February. Instead, it acted in the best interests of Williams by paying for him to get counselling and making it clear that no further violence would be tolerated.

How soft would we have looked if we took the 'warm & fuzzy' approach a second time?

We HAD to release him, that goes without saying.

There is nothing to say that he can't come back and play again, once he has served any gaol time. But for the club to be able to 'fight for him and stick behind him', as several of you have suggested, he needs to be out of gaol.

That ain't gonna happen, and it's hardly the fault of the club.

You are probably in a better position to judge than Sharkie 1973 if you work in and around stuff like this everyday. I have no practical legal experience so dont know what the going penalty is for cases like Williams' and am just going on what i learnt last session at uni. I thought he would have gone to prison earlier if he has received 5 suspended sentances already.
I hope its not long for his sake and the people he has to support anyway.

I think some peoplehere would try to make excusesfor Williams no matter what because they liked his playing style.
IF he had killed someone, would everbody still be saying "2 sides to the story"?
He's a fruit loop.
Paranoid Pschyzo.

Perhaps the Qld Sharks Supporters club could aid JW in his rehabilitation by having him gainfully employed at next years Sharkies Vs Ponies match at Lang Park by being OUR 'crowd controller' and telling the event staff/ bouncers to keep THEIR    noise down!!!!!

can someone tell me where this Jeremy Smith guy comes from.
There was a Jeremy Smith up here who played for Runaway Bay (Mat rogers junior club up here on the coast) and he went to manly in 2002 and came back to play for Tweed Head Seagulls last year. If it was him im not surprised he got a flogging.

I note he was placed on a suspended sentence because of some domestic violence too huh?

What do you have to say about that Millers? Isn't that what you accused Pogo of lying about?

as pogo stated that williams would not play footy because he beat up his wife his story is wrong

if you are going to "break" such a story surely you should get it right

besides getting this one wrong pogo has a bit of a string of getting it wrong

I am sure that when this story was "broken" that it was about this domestic violence. It has been shown that the domestic violence occured. I fail to see how he is wrong. His continued violence has landed him in gaol. Don't you think the judge will take his domestic violence into account when he hands down his ruling?
