Willie Mason: Players Should Strike for More Money - "Without us, there is no game"

I think a lot of the posters above have just jumped on Mason's back without giving this much thought

I'm no Mason fan, nor a Dogs fan, but in this case I think he makes some good points

Read the article in the initial post, on this occasion I don't believe this to be an attempt by Mason to pad his bank balance

Oink !

Mate once people here (I'm guessing most are under 16) see Mason and or Bulldogs they come up with conclusions without Properly reading and thinking about the article.

Maybe LU can introduce parent supervision for under 16's.

Reading opinions on here makes me realise why we have just returned a geniused govt to power in NSW.

Typical backwards thinking by people who cannot see the forest for the trees.

Willie is 100% spot on in everything he says and it sounds as though you all want the player to play for free or reduce the amounts they are paid.

If any of you were good enough, you'd be playing and asking for as much as you could get as well.

Mason is not the sharpest tool in the shed. The 'strike at Origin time' is his poorly conceived way of telling us he feels strongly about the issue (IMO).

If thinking it's a stupid idea to strike Origin so the players can get more money is backwards, then I suck poo up my arsehole.

You could be right. But I dare say Mason is geniused enough to actually mean it.

Absoloutely spot on Legend.

Every single person posting in this thread if good enough to play the game at a professional level would take as much money as they could for performing.

Exatly the same as what everyone of us does in our own jobs.

What i'd be interested to know is how many of these "anti-rewarding the players" would be prepared to strike in their own jobs if they felt they were being taken for a ride by their employers ;-)

It's a threat. Not a solution.

Do you get the difference?

Willie is threatening to strike during origin so he (and the players) can get what they want. He's not saying that no origin is the solution to getting more money.

For all we know Willie might think striking is the worst thing that can happen to the game, and has absolutely no intention of doing so when push comes to shove. However, his true personal feeling have nothing to do with what he'll say publicly because he wants to gain some leverage in his battle with the NRL for more money for the players.

As I said before... do you expect him to say 'LET'S STRIKE IN DECEMBER'?

Yes I do. But it doesn't matter which it is.

I see the point some making about people wanting to get most out of their work. But I bet when people want to progress in the workplace their pay increase doesn't affect millions of viewers in multiple countries, & make their entire company look f*cked up.

Let's imagine if Willie actually rallies a bunch of players to boycott Origin. Do you really think all the players who dreamed as kids of playing Origin are gonna turn it down ? NO chance in hell. Origin will go on, & those few players will be regretting their action, & then you getting all the players pissy at each other for their own individual reasons. It's a ridiculous idea, & the players would be f*cking themselves over.

The worst thing about this is going to be the love-in on the footy show next week where the whole panel will take turns to agree with him and suck his dick.
That would be a real worry if I gave a f*ck what that bunch of inbred idiots thought. God forbid I should stumble onto that show while channel surfing on a Thursday night.

Gasnier made a good comment and point on this on the Sunday footy show.

He said something along the lines suggesting that the nrl puts restrictions on third party deals for player because these deals could potentially conflict with the sponsorship deals the NRL signs. His point was that if they cant earn this extra money from third party arrangements because the nrl has signed its own, then the players should get a share of the NRL's deals. He was also asking for more transparency in the NRL's books because he felt that the money the NRL was earning was not being used appropriately.. ie grass roots.
Yeah, Gasnier's as greedy as Li'l Willie. Both have played the Onion card to screw our game for a bit more cash. I wouldn't piss on either of them if they were on fire.

Fringe players can drop out and get a real job any time they like. They don't generate income for the game, I don't pay my hard-earned to watch them. They're gambling on a shot at the big money. Good luck to them, but don't let them gamble with my money.

Willie has made a very reasonable motion towards.......i.e. something stinks in dollar land (not just player payments), and he is brave enough to open the door to get people to discuss things. He has obvioulsy heard many players talk about it over a period of time, and decided (on his name) to represent these wimps.

The bit about striking during origin, well work it out, he is writing for (a) a NEWSPAPER = sensationlism is par for the course (b) Striking vs State of Origin = SOA (big event) association creates more debate.

Job well done if you ask me.

And don't give me this crap about comparing what your job pays...christ, soccer anyone.

If you're not earning enough, Willie, feel free to leave our game and play rugby union....oh wait, you already tried to play that card but the ARU came out and said they weren't interested. You could always piss off to England but I guess you wouldn't be the centre of attention over there

Australian Captain? ahahaha

Aren't News Limited recouping their money from the SL days? If so, the pot has to be smaller for clubs (Salary Cap) and Players (payments).

I can't help feeling that if the cap is raised the elite will get richer and the rest will suffer. If the cap is raised then so should the minimum amount each player is paid. If you've got anything left over then use it however you want, but raising the minimum amount will at least ensure everyone gets a fair share.
