Dumb idea. If the players strike, the NRL will be destroyed by AFL and the possbily even the ARU.
Then their will be hell of a lot league players looking for non league jobs.

Yes without the players their is no game, but without TV contracts their is no money.

The worst thing about this is going to be the love-in on the footy show next week where the whole panel will take turns to agree with him and suck his dick.

I guess that show won't have a pg rating. I wonder if it will be spit or swallow time for the chief ?

Git Willie.

Seriously any valid points he may have in the speel are overidden by the fact he comes across as a money hungry toss pot.

Hasn't our game, thats right THE PEOPLES GAME, been dragged through enough sh*te to last a lifetime. The game is back to growing and getting stronger and this human stain throws in the strike banter. Moron

Strike...NO
More money for fringe first graders...YES

you people whinging about Willie being greedy honestly need to wake up to yourself and learn how to read. He said in the article that he is being paid well enough, but if a strike was to go ahead, it would be for the benefit of future generations of players - the players who work just as hard as willie and earn a tenth of what he earns.

Players are only in the game for 10 years, then most of them are ratsh*t after they finish. IMO the minimum wage for anyone in the squad should be 75,000, maybe even up to 100,000.

While i don't agree with the whole striking during origin thing, at least Willie is standing up for the players who aren't getting paid what they deserve.

Look at the answers in this thread compared to the one I posted earlier on the same topic... the difference is the way this thread starter layed out the bias topic title

How is it not fair the salary cap increases ? There has been an increase of over $70 million a year yet only $500 000 to the salary cap? The players are being ripped off.. lets use common sense.. The NRL is not spending all that money on grass roots either. They have enough to do both but probably want to take care of their own interests and News Ltd. first. These are professional athletes in one of the toughest sports in the world and there is clearly enough money to increase the salary cap. Mason is just speaking out on behalf of all the other players. Ofcourse he doesn't want to actually strike but threatening a strike is the only way to get the NRL to listen.

If the players don't feel they earn enough playing footy they could retire and do something else to earn a living. As i said previously, 100k for a reserve grader seems a bit rich to me.

The players are paid what the market wants to pay them. A huge percentage of their earnings is economic rent. No leg to stand on when they whinge.

Mattyg you can't believe everything you read. Just because Willie says it's for future generations, it's foolish to believe there is not a modicum of self interest. If the salary cap goes up, a higher percentage of the extra dollars WILL go to the star players rather than the fringe first graders, don't worry about that,

No, because if they raise the salary cap, they would also raise the minimum wage. IMO, that is what they should do, however it should be more focused on the minimum wage if anything...

I thought they just raised it recently to around 60K? In which case the minimum salary is still a LOT higher than what the majority of Australians earn per year.

Gasnier made a good comment and point on this on the Sunday footy show.

He said something along the lines suggesting that the nrl puts restrictions on third party deals for player because these deals could potentially conflict with the sponsorship deals the NRL signs. His point was that if they cant earn this extra money from third party arrangements because the nrl has signed its own, then the players should get a share of the NRL's deals. He was also asking for more transparency in the NRL's books because he felt that the money the NRL was earning was not being used appropriately.. ie grass roots.

Golllllyyyyy Gomer - it's a big ten all round for Willie. Ten for starting a strike for cash debate on the tenth anniversary of a breakaway for cash when you have the mentaility of about a ten year old which is ten dollars more than you agreed to pay when the RLPA asked the players to subsidise it.

Sure give the younger guys a fair cop but strike .... ? won't get my vote you transparent greedy goose better to grow your hair and then stick finger in a powerpoint ... again.
