The Bulldogs and Kangaroos star said he had achieved most of his goals in league and believed that, at 24, the time was right for him to make the change. "If I'm ever going to union I've got to go now," he said. "I probably couldn't wait any longer at my age. The 2007 Rugby World Cup looks pretty good."

Mason said the international dimension of union, not money, was the main attraction. "I'm pretty good mates with [union converts] Wendell Sailor and Lote Tuqiri. They just have a ball - they play all around the world. It'd be pretty exciting doing that. League is very limited in that area: it's not an international game like union."

Genuine interest or a good idea in order to help bump up his next contract? This will be an interesting story, it seems a little odd that 1 week out from the season starting Big Willie wants to add fuel to a growing fire here...

Despite his off field problems of late, losing Mason to Union is not a "winning" situation for Rugby League. Yes, he has embarassed the game and his club on a handful of occasions, though in time, with maturity and off field help, this can be fixed so to speak...

Mason is a damn fine footballer, a larger than life character and I believe he will "grow up" on and off the field from 2005 and beyond...couple that with his undoubted talent, we are the loser here if we lost him to the "dark side".

Personality apart

He does emphasise a VALID point, that being the fact that RU does have a big advantage with regard to Internationals/overseas travel.

Suely RL should look at developing the international side of the game initially via the tri series.

Travel!!!

If I'm not mistaken Mason was a member of the Kangaroos that thought Prague was boring cause it had no TAB.

From another point of view, how is it good for union when almost 1/3 of the wallabies would be ex-leagueys?

RL could really ram home that point and should even now.....they need ex RL players to prop up their senior team....not too mant ex rah rahs in the current Roo squad.

But in reality the entire thing is a joke, I laughed out lound long when I heard this on the radio this morning.

Mason a wallaby...yeh right! :roll: :lol:

What next?

Mark Philippousis in the news for tennis?

This article by Phil Derriman (a union journalist for the SMH - are there any other kind) was placed in the middle of today's RL news from that paper.

However, looking through the article I wonder if it is genuine. Every tired cliche, every hackneyed phrase about going to union has been used:

1) international dimension, not money;
2)going for the challence after achieving all there is in RL;
3) the union WC is in 2007 & I have got to go now to be ready;
4) I am great mates with Wendell, Lote & Matt ; they are having a ball with all the international travel, the profile of union went through the roof since they changed;
5) Does have a background in union have played in the centres at school & has a brother & cousin playing union etc;
6) The idea of changing codes has been on my mind for some time;
7) have had a couple of chats with Eddy;
8) thought that Brad Thorn could have done a lot better in union because he dominated RL for so long;
9) union is a lot more technical - just a new challenge.;
10)always wasnted to play for the Wallabys/All Blacks.

Wayne Bennett had the right idea about Willie. Don't let him give interviews.

I think your right Immortal, but seriously, Mason a culture Vulture? I just can't see him fitting into the Rugby way of life.

Goodness gracious me.

Firstly his manager claims talks with the NZRFU to be an All Black.

Now he's thinking of being a Wallaby?

C'mon Willie, you seemed to mature up quite a bit over the past six months, don't go back into the six in one hand half a dozen in the other stakes. You killed it in the grand final, one of the great performances that one - the Bulldogs will try hard to keep you, if not, any number of about 14 clubs will stick their hand up to help you out.
