But it is believed the Roosters are prepared to offload three players to accommodate Mason, who could command about $400,000 a season on the open market.
One player, veteran lock Luke Ricketson, is expected to retire at the end of this season.
While Mason has not ruled out staying at Belmore, privately he has told friends of his desire to play for the Roosters.
He socialises with Roosters players and has forged strong ties with club coaching director Phil Gould, who backed Mason during a series of traumatic ordeals last season.
Mason also remembers the representative lifeline he received last year from Roosters coach Ricky Stuart, who named him in the Country Origin side as Mason pondered defecting to rugby.
