SHAMELESS PLUG!!!

Flying Fish Cabernet Merlot. Anyone who reads my posts knows my abhorrent nature towards Merlot and anything it is blended with. And now I have to hock one to customers (yes, just one). A blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon and 18% Merlot. The "green" edge to Margaret River wines isn't present to me (in your face Evans + Tate!), although the softer nature of Merlot is still present. Plenty of ripe dark fruit and a slight dark chocolate note as well. Good quaffer.

2009 Sam Miranda Tempranillo. Absolute. F**king. Ripper. Drinking perfectly too. These guys were the real surprise when I first went down to the King Valley, they were the best winery I visited. I have only just discovered that it's got 10% Tannat in it, they didn't mention that at the cellar door. Really complex, loads of cherry, but really dark cherries instead of the brighter flavour you get from some Tempranillo.

I know it's one of yours, but the Hanwood Merlot to me is a typical fruit driven, soft, flabby mess....you should look at the Brands Laira merlots :p

You lie! Lies make baby Jesus cry!

Its better than most of the merlot I've drunk. Still not something I'd pay money for...

Brand's Laira Two Row Merlot is a reasonable drop, actually.

Getting stuck into the new Barrellman IBA exclusive tonight. '12 Cab Sauv. Lots of tanin, but a good drop.

Also, you boys - get yourself a bottle of the McWilliam's Appellation Canberra Syrah when it comes out. Bloody fine wine it is.

Where will this be available and how much do you know?

Offhand, because I am a nerd, do you know who you got the fruit from and who made it?

Will be in some limited Coles stores. I think Vintage Cellars, and maybe the odd First Choice. It hasn't launched yet though so I'm sure it will depend on a few things.

Re who made it, I am not entirely sure. I don't think Jim Chatto had much to do with it, but I do know Jim Brayne had a fair bit of interest in it (and likely bought the fruit if it wasn't produced by us, which I don't think it was but can check too); Adrian Sparks and Andrew Higgins were likely involved too as it dealt with the McWilliams winery in the blending (from what I can recall).

I'll definitely look out for it, I don't like Canberra but I love Canberra shiraz. The reason I ask who grew the grapes (other than nerdism), is simply that there are some rubbish growers in Canberra and we've had some deceptive years. Not that I think you guys would pick the bad grapes, but even Tim Kirk has struggled in some recent vintages.

Yeah, I'm not that clear on things yet. But Jim Brayne is a first class wine maker and wouldn't buy rubbish so I have confidence in it.

I had a taste of it too; was very pleased by the result. It, the Canberra Shiraz and the Hilltops Cab Sauv were all very good.

Didn't bother with the whites
