Petaluma Coonawarra Red Blend 1994.

Blend of 60% Cab Sauv and 40% Merlot. If you told me this wine had Merlot in it, I wouldn't believe you. This would of been a huge wine when it was bottled, as after all this time there is still some very good tannin structure. Classic aged Coonawarra flavours of cigar box and bitter chocolate. Very happy to have popped the cork on this one.

Just can't get into Cab Merlot. I've likely never had a good one, but my experience has been that it tastes like cardboard.

Polished off a bottle of Zeppelin Big Bertha. One of my serious faves. Lilydale Gewertztremener next.

I've never been a fan of Aussie Merlot. I agree, it has a flavour profile of wet cardboard.

But I remember going to a DWS trade show in Brisbane in 2012 (how I remember going I don't know, I ended up ratshit drunk) and sat in a few of their master classes. One was for Bordeaux, and got the shock of my life. I swore blind that I was drinking a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, only to be told I was drinking a wine made up of 98% Merlot and 2% Cab Franc.

Finished off a Zeppelin Amelie Shiraz - 2009 (Eden Valley). Gorgeous peppers and cherry flavour. Went down a treat.

I look forward to you teaching me more about these...

Regions, look to McLaren Vale. Wherever good GSM is made is a good starting point. Yarra does some good ones too.

Bottlo, not sure. Not one you see around a lot.

SGL / Baz - any good tips on where to find a straight Mourvèdre?

Dan Murphys or Vintage Cellars. I haven't got a clue what the smaller bottlos in Sydney are like but Dans and VC should definitely have some.

Teusner Dog Strangler is a good one. Turkey Flat too. And depending on the stores range they'll likely have some Spanish imported Monastrell which is the same grape.

Le Prince de Courthezon Cotes-du-Rhone 2011. A blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre, and 10% Syrah. For me this is quite earthy, with forest floor and black pepper spice up front, which is interesting for a wine with that much Grenache in the blend. Very clean finish. Pleasant quaffer.

I received a bottle of 2004 Eileen Hardy Shiraz a few years ago from my beautiful bride. Have been waiting to try it. Cracking it tonight as it's my birthday. Can't wait to get stuck in. No doubt it's going to be magnificent.
