Women's NRL

We're all RL fans here and will probably all give it a watch, but how many would really latch onto a women's team that wasn't the women's branch of their current club?

On the flip-side if they are aligned with current clubs and there is only 6 teams are the fans of the 10 unrepresented clubs gonna buy in? I'm a Sharks fan and would take an interest in the Sharkettes similar probably to NYC; happy for a win but I'm not gonna go out of my way to see every game and wouldn't fork out to be at their grand final. I'm sure as shit not buying into any other club's side, a rival jersey is a rival regardless if its on a male or a female.

I'm thinking if all NRL clubs aren't represented then maybe some broader shit like Brisbane Babes, Canberra Chicks, Melbourne Mums etc. might be the go. You're asking people to essentially take on a whole new sports franchise but you're not asking 10 lots of current RL fans to follow a rival. I could live in Brisbane, hate the Broncos and still get behind the Babes.

Wonder if the NRL want clubs to put forward say a $2 mil guarantee or $2 mil to buy a licence

If I was a club I would be expecting a $5 mil grant to run a W-NRL team

Not expecting to cough up cash

I said early they or the NRL should be looking to take the Ausaid money that is currently given to bloody AFL, Have the Orchids do health and safety message etc.
That's the sort of thinking that is absent from NRL administrators! Pretty sure they are not aware of this funding in general!
A little research helps. Some facts:
Support for Rugby League in the Pacific
http://dfat.gov.au/people-to-people...ific/pages/sport-for-development-pacific.aspx

Aid funding boost for PNG rugby league
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-12-11/an-aid-funding-boost-for-png-rugby/4420370

Plus there more if you google it. I think you'll find that AusAid and Rugby League administrators are well aware of each other's existence.

That's great! Pretty sure a code like AFL has been using it well before rugbyleague? But yes its good that something is happening in this regard. My major tip for rugby league in schools is to have Leaguetag as a registered PSSA sport for primary schools. This would significantly increase familiarity and participation in rugby league.

I'll leave the speculating up to you. I do know that AusAid has been involved in Rugby League development in South Africa as well, so they seem to see value in the game.

But that's all getting well off topic now.

Interesting point you bring up about South Africa. An article by an NZ journalist informed that rugbyleague development people would put on a clinic/camp for rugby league(probably the Ausaid people?) and a few weeks later the rugby union people would come in and basically say "You are now playing this!" I can refer you the journalist if you like?

I didn't say that RL doesn't already access Ausaid. I was commenting that supporting a PNG Womens NRL team is the type of program that the NRL should (and very well could be) be promoting to the government to getting funding to help set up the NRLW

This is how the NRL likes to do things. By stealth. One of the conditions of the clubs agreeing to this would have been we don't want any money spent on publicity or promotion. It has to stand on its own two legs.

The big question for me is... by how much would the 1999 Magpies finish last in NRLW??

Nice. I figured this was another thing the NRL was going to fall way behind on. Happy to be proven wrong.

First team in should be the Bears.

You could argue that we have a leg up on both AFL and RU on this one.

We have a women's club league as the AFL does and the women's teams will be from the iconic clubs but we also offer women's state of origin an internationals like Union does. We are the only sport out of the three that do both.

I don't mind who the inaugural teams are, as long as we continue to expand until all NRL clubs are represented and I also don't want to see some BS like the Storm putting their women's team on the Sunshine Coast like they do for their netball team FFS - it is not a good look, it basically tells the Victorian public; f@#k you we are a QLD team at heart, we are here to put a dot on the map - which is not how you win new fans in Melbourne.

True. We are probably the only code that has the female and male world champions (though I am guessing touch footy also has this claim to fame).
Based on the world cup you could argue that the Jillaroos are the most entertaining Rugby team in the country of either code.

Is there likely to be any corporate or TV network support for the WNRL?

Man, can't help but be jealous of the support the NAB and 7network give the WAFL. The NAB ads are something we would be pleased with for our mens competition. And every game live by seven.

Edit: 7mate are only showing 1 game a week.

Heard that womens games are being covered? I'd say by FOX but not sure. The major win for the ladies game is the grandfinal on grandfinal NRL day prior to the big one . That's very positive. It will be interesting to see what the weekly coverage will be like!

I’d like to think that it gives the Nrl a bargaining chip. Afl tv deal also had the wafl tied into it. You could argue it helped push up the price or maybe not. With cbs/10, 9 and fox in the picture for winter sport it could help gain a small deal.

I agree. I actually think the womens state of origin would rate through the roof given that on Origin night everyone is dripping with state based hatred.
So I would make it a condition that if Nine wants to broadcast the womens origin series they have to broadcast all of the WNRL competition or offer it all to seven who got ratings of about 250k for the final of the womens world cup.
