A contestant from reality TV show ‘The Rookie’ has been named in the United States Hawks side for the first-ever Americas Nines on May 18.

Kevin Reed Jr, who will play for Brooklyn Kings this year, featured on NRL’s ‘The Rookie’ TV show back in 2016.

At the time, the American said he wanted to be the ‘reverse Jarryd Hayne’ and go from being in the San Francisco 49ers mini camp to becoming an NRL star.

Reed thinks being on ‘The Rookie’ kept him in the spotlight to be selected for USA’s national Nines squad.
He said: “I don’t think the USA Rugby League would have known about me without that.

“It put something on my resume that I got to be put in front of Mark Geyer and Brad Fittler and these guys. They picked the guys who even got on the show.”

United States Nines squad: Dean Hunt, Nick Newlin (Atlanta Rhinos), Brandon Anderson, Kevin Reed Jr, Jamil Robinson, Dane Wilcoxen (Brooklyn Kings), Khalil Harris, Steven Knight (Jacksonville Axemen), David Ulch (Lakeland Renegades), Alex Foster (New York Knights), Chris Frazier (NOVA Eagles), Kyle Denham, Andrew Kneisly, Tristan Sylk (Philadelphia Fight), Sterling Wynn (Southwest Florida Copperheads), Connor Donehue (Sunshine Coast Falcons), Bart Longchamp (Tampa Mayhem), Matt Walsh (White Plains Wombats).

Speaking of the world nines and Jarryd Hayne, he would make the Fiji squad even with no football all year. He and Siva would be a couple of big impact players and would possibly make them contenders. Who would make up the rest of the squad?

I am not sure who Mal will pick for Australia but he should put on a trial game for possible nines specialists who are in need of a second chance.

A guy like Bevan French who was the star of the last Auckland nines should be given a chance to make the squad. There would be a bunch of others around like him.

So long as Australia has stars like Cook (or Cam Smith), Latrell, Tedesco, Morgan, Ponga then a bunch of specialists around them would be great.

I don’t think Fiji will be selecting Hayne. It’s hardly going to go down well with the broadcasters.

1. Ponga
2. Ado Carr
3. Roberts
4. Ferguson
5. French
6. Munster
7. Brooks
8. Finucane
9. Cook

That would be an exciting kangaroos starting line up

Montoya’s so good you’ve named him twice

What about Milne, waqa and the recent union converts at Brisbane and the warriors??

Twins :) yeh Waqa Blake at fullback is a good call

These are starting nine. There’ll be additional ?5 or6 squad players also.

I'd throw a Sims in there for good measure for some size, but mobile forward action.

Not sure what Hayne is up to but Fiji should have a decent squad and not sure what the eligibility critieria will be but here’s what I’m hoping to see;

FB - Naiqama
WG - Vunivalu
WG - Sivo

CE - Blake
CE - T.Sims
1/2 - Koroisau

FWD - Kikau
FWD - D.Saifiti
HK - Bukuya

Bench
Kamikamica, Uate, K.Sims, Williame (UK) Lovodua (NSW Cup) Ravalawa, Montoya, Evans, Vudogo (QLD Cup)

That should give them enough mobility and size and impact off the bench.

Anyone of the big 3 & Tonga,Fiji or Samoa could win it imo....Jamaica would have had a gun side too if they where invited

So who do we think are the favourites for this? NZ will have a pretty strong side

Impossible to say without knowing how serious the players and bodies are going to take it. Id say a lesser nation as it will be a big deal for them, PNG, Fiji or Tonga. England and NZ have test matches to play so doubt they will put strong sides out.
