Hey I thought we'd use this thread for some discussion on the game and on our team.

Overall I was a little dissapointed, I did give up my weekend sleep in just to see my team get done however I am not too dissapointed either, I did get to see a solid game of football after all.

I thought our backline never really got a chance to shine. Karmichael Hunt played his usual game but he's got to stop with his risky passes when they are not needed. I thought Michaels was good, very promising and will be on the wing come March 16th, while Boyd got very little oppurtunity, played alright I guess.

Tate and Hodges were both solid in this hit out, below what we're use from them, however this was their first major hit out and to make matters worse, they never really got any good clean ball.

Halves were alright. Lockyer tried but just kept choosing the wrong options or went for a bad pass. Perry played one of the worst games I've seen him play.

As for the forwards, I think this is where we went wrong IMO.

Carlaw is not a Prop forward, he's a second rower who attacks at the fringes. Berrigan should've been on the bench and come on and created havoc up the middle when St. Helens were getting tired. Ennis should've been on at the start as he really added no impact. Civo and Thorn played their respective parts, didn't see much of them though.

Parker was everywhere and was one of our best on field IMO. Same goes for Carroll who made a lot of big hits.

As for our bench, Thaiday didn't do too much. Eastwood looked promising, made some good runs and made some heavy tackles. Hannant was solid as ever. Ennis looked rusty as I've said, however should've started the game.

Overall not too phased at the moment, just hope we make the right team changes and we should be sweet.

I was there and Webke is definately a big loss. Broncos started well but the Broncos lacked some up-front grunt. Too much reliance on Lackyer a la Newcastle and Johns. But he had a quiet match and was pretty well shut down. Saints lifted enonormously when Scully came on and even further in the second half when Cunningham came on. But they were pretty evenly matched and it could have gone either way.

Lockyer looked like his lottery numbers had come up but he'd lost his ticket. He was not happy about losing. But hey, s**t happens...

Wayne Bennett and Locky looked the picture of misery and despair last night

What would your reaction have been had they been laughing it up in the dressing room.

Wayne Bennett can't laugh

Really?
Watch the post game celebrations of the prelim final of 2006. Brad Thorn put him in a bear hug and Bennett was laughing. The ch9 camera shots showed him smiling and laughing as he congratulated the players as they entered the dressing room.

Watch the GF last yr and the post game celebrations and you couldnt wipe the smile off his face. Did the lap of honour and embraced the fans....all with a big smile on his face.

Yeh I was quite impressed with Carroll. He looked fitter than he's ever been and he was everywhere. I agree with Carlaw. Hes trimmed up and got a lot more speed over the off season. Lets not waste that by having him hit up into the big forwards. Out wide is where he's most dangerous.

Hannant should have started prop.

Yeah I have to agree with what you have to say icewind. I might of had Thorn start Prop IMO, he's better up the middle, Carlaw/Thaiday in the second row with Parker. Thaiday IMO played better last year when he started as the Broncos always started on the front foot that way with his added enthusiasm.

Carroll was a mad man, I just hope he doesn't go down injured because everytime he looks dangerous he goes down with some unfortunate injury and returns a shadow of what he was.

I am not too fussed about the result. Lets look at some positives hey.

1. No major injures. I said before the game if we came through without major injures then I'd be happy.

2. Michaels proved why he is way better than both Tupou or Boyd.

3. Carlaw aint a prop

4. Severe questions on Perry. Could we try Brent McConnell in round 1?

5. Ennis getting through his first game in 8 months.

you cant fault the effort. i do wonder about the gameplan which saw the backs starved of the ball (though conditions could have played a large role in it).

Carlaw looks much better this year then last, i agree he's prob better off at 2nd row, this switch could force him to get more involved.

Michaels looked sharp, boyd showed defenisvely he still gets lost on the wing (maybe taking pointers from tate). I agree berro has more impact off the bench than ennis but to be fair to berro he was the clive churchill winner and you cant just bench him to start - besides it's ennis first run in a long time he'll get better.

peryy was more non-existant than normal but i anticipate he'll improve as the year goes on

But... weren't you touting young Boyd as a candidate for a spot in this years QLD side as a winger?

You're a fickle one locky.

There are hardly any wingers for QLD to choose from. It is one position we are extremely weak.

nah we have plenty of centres and fullbacks to choose from :p

the position of winger is dying in the modern game, even at test level we're putting in centres instead of wingers

None of QLd's centres are good wingers and our fullbacks are specialist fullbacks, although tehy are damn good specialist fullbacks. That said you will probally see Tate on the wing with Hodges and Willie Tonga ion the centres.

So he's not even the best winger at the Broncos, but he's good enough for QLD?

Putting it simply yes. At least he has some combinations and has a year more experience than Michaels has.
