They're doing a major overhaul of professions, PvP, and class specs - so I'm hopeful.

Hunters, who are my go to class, are getting a huge overhaul:

- Beast Mastery stays largely the same as the prototypical hunter.
- Marksmanship will no longer have a pet and will have extra ranged beef.
- Survival back to being a melee spec.

They've also announced they're overhauling at least the Demonology tree for locks, making them hardcore summoners rather than having metamorphosis (which has gone to the new Demon Hunter class).

Between this, the shift of PvP talents to a separate tree, and the class halls - it might actually make every spec a different experience.

The Ranger in Gw2 has these 3 traitlines too (although 2 others as well) Never played WoW so didn't realise it came from there. I suppose there's only so many names you can come up with for these things.

Just started a new toon. I've got to say, for all of the flak that MoP got, it stands out as my favourite expansion in terms of setting, music, and overall storytelling.

Love that Asian aesthetic.

Was considering subbing for a month to try it out again...it's been nearly a year for me.

And it goes wrath > cata > mop > wol for me (didn't play BC enough to rate it properly)

I'll double check this afternoon. Been away for five weeks, so haven't had much time for gaming.

I would say my order is Wrath > MoP > TBC > WoD > Cata for me. Loved the old world revamp, but Cata's end-game was kind of shit.

Haven't played this since the level cap was 85 (Cata I think). Worgen frost mage. In the days before getting completely bored with it I remember finding much enjoyment hovering over lower level areas and destroying people. Dick move I know....

Moved on to GW2 soon after.

I've tried to get into that 3-4 times now, but I just can't get interested in its generic fantasy world.

Now, LOTRO is something I keep going back to, and I'll occasionally try to like ESO due to it being based on some of my favourite games of all time.

Since this thread oscillates between a WoW and general mmorpg thread, I'll run with the latter.

Moved on to GW2 soon after.

You handsome bastard.

I'm still playing GW2 (since launch) but slightly more casually now given old Arenanet are taking an age to release content. Still my favourite mmorpg I've ever played though, one of those games that is highly visually appealing to me that I can find entertainment by doing even the simplest stuff. I also like the fluent combat system better than any other I've played (which is admittedly, not many).

Now, LOTRO is something I keep going back to, and I'll occasionally try to like ESO due to it being based on some of my favourite games of all time.

I think much like your comment on ESO, this is the appeal of GW2 to a substantial amount of its players. The original Guild Wars had a pretty huge following and still has a massive fanboy crowd in the GW2 community, many of which seemingly only to continue to play GW2 because it's the successor to their favourite game. Any decent throwbacks to gw1 lore in gw2 are met with old timers blowing their collective loads  I think gw1's lore was probably one of its largest appeals, so in a way (and I feel like this myself sometimes), while gw2 has its own story, you're missing out on a lot of the value if you never really got into the originals.

I only ever dabbled in GW1, I liked the story and it was the first mmorpg thread I played that wasn't Runescape so it had that going for it. A lot of gw1 fans will say that gw2 is good but a lesser version of gw1, but personally I find it to be a much improved version.

On LOTRO, I logged in a few months ago just to transfer my characters off the closing or now closed servers. I really enjoyed my time in LOTRO but I pretty much never will go back. I've never been one to mmo-hop consistently and I can't stand lotro's gameplay after playing gw2. Of course the story is always going to be a huge drawcard though and the one unfortunate aspect of not playing it any more is not being able to see all the cool new areas I was always waiting to see. FTR, I quit in 2012 (gw2 launch) and last played actively during Isengard.

An onnline friend of mine (met in the days of LOTRO) who has been playing RIFT the last couple of years has told me that's gone down the drain due to recent decisions so he's back on the WoW train too now.

I wish I could get into GW2 like you have. I never played (or heard of) the original, and my few forays into it so far were perhaps hindered somewhat by the Chinese firewall making it a tad laggy.

Maybe when I get decent internet again, I'll give it another burl.

----

My brothers were both heavy into Rift when it first came out, but it didn't seem to have a great deal of replay value or breadth to it. I could never get into it.

----

LOTRO's graphics and gameplay are a bit shit, although your first barrow wight encounter is still something to be remembered and the settlements feel more lived in than anything I've found in WoW or GW2 or Rift.

It still blows my mind that a decent D&D MMO has yet to be made. It's got so much content!

First Guild Wars came out in 2005. I played briefly in late 2006/early 2007 before going to LOTRO when it launched in April 2007. I've always been a pick-and-stick kind of guy when it comes to mmorpgs, I've only played RS, Lotro and GW2. The latter two I both started playing at launch and stuck with for several years at least. So getting into any game is just easier for me. I don't like dabbling in different mmorpgs because I'm hopeless and will probably want to play them all. That right there is the main reason I've never really played WoW >_>

LOTRO's graphics are outdated now but they were bloody awesome back in it's heyday. I mean, assuming you're playing on full graphics. Like GW2 I took pleasure in the simplest of things, I loved just walking around places like Bree, Rivendell and the Misty Mountains. Still got 100s of screenshots from the first few years of it. There were lots of gameplay elements I liked too. Skirmishes were right up my alley if you ever played those, a lot of the group content in Lotro I wish was in Gw2 actually.

When I think about it though there is probably a common theme to the type of mmorpgs I've moved away from personally: the gear treadmill. I think I just got sick of it and moved onto the other types of grinds more suited to me.

Anyone still playing?

With BfA on the horizon, I've resubbed so that I can unlock the four new sub-races, get my damned Legion flying, and basically set myself up for what should be a fun expansion.

I resubbed a few months ago

I'm a little miffed by the other half of the high elves being alliance, strange choice tbh but so is the fallen joining the horde after eons of the blood elves committing genocide on them but it is what it is

I feel like the Horde wins it hands down with the Zandalari. Best looking subrace by a country mile.

Bit disappointed that the Nightfallen don't look nearly as good as the in-game Nightfallen.

I really don't wanna get sucked back into this game, but the classic version looks tempting.

Then again, I bought the last expansion and then hardly played it at all.

My brothers have been hardcore playing on various legacy servers over the last few years, so they are beyond excited for the Classic release.

To be honest, even I'll probably jump on board, even though I don't miss grinding out the last few bars of a level or getting ganked ad nauseum in STV.
