Tomahawks give Aussies a fright in USAWednesday, December 1, 2004
Gillette Tri Nations champions Australia recovered from a shaky start to defeat the USA Tomahawks 36-24 in the Liberty Bell Cup game at Franklin Field in Philadelphia on Tuesday evening.
The game, played in four quarters and on an astroturf surface, had been expected by many to be a one-sided affair, but the Tomahawks stunned the World Champions to establish a 12-0 lead in the opening quarter, and by half-time were ahead 24-6 with Brandon Costin leading the way for the Americans.
However, the third quarter saw Australia begin to assert themselves on the game. A second try for Matt Bowen, and further tries from Shaun Berrigan and Matt Cooper brought them level, before Willie Mason crossed for another to put them ahead for the first time and Darren Lockyer's conversion made it 30-24 in favour of the Kangaroos.
Matt Bowen rounded off the scoring with his hat trick try, and Brett Kimmorley added the goal to give a final scoreline of 36-24.
A worthy win for the Australians on the final leg of a tour which has seen them play in New Zealand, Britain, France and the USA, but a positive result too for the Americans who showed that they were not simply there to make up the numbers on a Kangaroo victory parade.
