damn forgot who he fought....i know that something happened like sting cheated or some shit and then JJ dillon stripped him of the title and announced a world title tournament which bret hart won, at the time sting was a heel so obviously his opponent was a face, i was leaning towards lex luger but no, ummm this one is tough and a great question, i cant think of any main eventers that were faces at the time besides DDP, screw it im gonna say Benoit

DDP was heel I think and was with the triad, Luger was also heel and was Stings ally until Mayhem (which is the tournament you mention).

Btw, the opponent Sting versed had already had a match and had come off the victor and had become US champion.
