Liverpool & West Ham could face play-off for Europa League place

Premier League tie could force Europa League shoot-out

Liverpool may have to face West Ham in an end-of-season play-off to decide who qualifies for next season’s Europa League.

The Premier League have confirmed that an extra game at a neutral venue could take place if both clubs finish the season on the same points, goal difference and goals scored.

The Reds will secure a place in the group stage of the Champions League if they beat Sevilla in next Wednesday’s Europa League final in Basel.

However, if Jurgen Klopp’s side lose the final then they would be relying on their league position to qualify for the Europa League.

Liverpool currently sit eighth in the Premier League, three points and two places adrift of the Hammers.

But there is a scenario that if West Ham lose at Stoke City on Sunday and Liverpool beat West Brom then the two clubs will have identical records.

For example, if Slaven Bilic’s side are beaten 1-0 at the Britannia Stadium they will end up with 62 points, 64 goals scored and 50 conceded. If Liverpool were to win 2-1 at the Hawthorns their stats would be the same.

If that happened and Southampton failed to beat Crystal Palace then Liverpool and West Ham would finish tied for sixth place. A Saints win would still leave the prospect of Liverpool and West Ham locked together in seventh, which could still offer European football.

An extra game would only be played if the Reds lose the Europa League final.

Premier League rules state: “If at the end of the season either the league champions or the clubs to be relegated or the question of qualification for other competitions cannot be determined because two or more clubs are equal on points, goal difference and goals scored, the clubs concerned shall play off one or more deciding league matches on neutral grounds, the format, venue and timing of which shall be determined by the board.”

The team that finishes sixth in the Premier League will qualify for the Europa League. Seventh would also earn a European spot if Manchester United win the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace.

Let them have it if we don't win the final next week.

Rather CL next year or nothing at all.

Reports suggesting we're going in for Mainz goalkeeper Karius. Has spent time in England with City already, so if true should have no trouble settling in. Can't say I know too much about him apart from he's a decent young German keeper.

Anyone else know anything about him?

Only reading good things Jack. And looks like a really good price. 4.7 mil is being reported.

Also looks like we have signed up piotr zielinski for 9 mil

Nice bit of early business is both turn out to be true.

(Never seen either mind you, just from the reports I've read)

Yeah cheers mate, only reading good things myself. He spent sometime playing for City's youth side so he has lived in England before which I think helps him settle into the side straight away. He's only 22-23 as well and is pretty well thought of.

Another site I visit has some well informed people and they seem to think it is a better move than going for Timo Horn or Ter Stegen. As long as Mignolet isn't between the sticks next season i don't care really.

Reports are circulating that Liverpool have reached personal terms with Loris Karius from Mainz, they just need to hammer out the terms of the transfer. If true Mignolet could be facing some real competition next year.

Also, it is official that Jordan Rossiter will be moving to Scotland to play for Rangers. Signed on a 4 year deal.

FYI, for those who have Foxtel, the beIN channels have been added to the sports pack as of Sunday. Hence if you watch beIN Sports 1 (Channel 513) on Thursday 19 May 2016 at 4.45 am (AEST) you can watch the Liverpool v Sevilla 2016 Europa League Final. :)

On the subject of watching games on tv I'm a bit angry that if I want to watch the EPL next year I have to pay minimum $60 per month to swap to Optus.
EPL package is $15 per month but you need their other services to watch it.
Heard SBS will have 1 EPL game live per week and I think others will be replayed.
LFC tv is going to Foxtel but obviously games will be on delay.
