You wouldn't blame David for galloping into sunset

Article from: The Courier-Mail

August 01, 2008 12:00am

THERE must be days when David Gallop wakes up and says to himself: "This gig simply ain't worth the hassle."

A moment when he sits on his board between sets on his early morning surf and thinks: "Stuff it, I'm not going in today, let someone else sort it out."

But then by the time he gets home and checks his messages, those thoughts -- if they exist -- are pushed aside and the chief executive resumes the battle.

And what a battle it is. Rugby league seems to find drama like no other game. The never-ending off-field exploits of young men who can't handle their grog is the mere tip of the iceberg.

More pressing is the ongoing stoush with the NSW Government over poker machine taxes which threaten to cripple most of the competition's Sydney-based clubs.

The constant search for increased revenue streams for a game almost entirely reliant on funds from television rights; the looming fight with the AFL as it beefs up its surge into traditional league territories . . . and then, wham bam, along comes Sonny Bill Williams. That was one not even Gallop could have seen coming. The game's highest-paid forward walking out on his teammates and club less than a year into a five-year deal, to play rugby union for a team that is the plaything of a loaded French comic-book king.

Who could blame Gallop if he just put his head in his hands and said: "Enough is enough."

But Gallop doesn't run and hide. After issuing a statement on Saturday night, there he was front and centre on Sunday morning trying to make sense of the developing Sonny Bill situation.

By the end of the day he was on the front foot, promising the Bulldogs whatever support they required, both financial and legal, to bring Williams to heel.

He was strong in his view that although the Williams situation was hardly ideal in the code's 100th year, the game was not about to disappear into a dark hole.

So was he hailed for his leadership, for his strong presence, for his refusal to bunker down -- as many of his counterparts in rival codes are prone to do?

No, Gallop put his head out and got it stomped on. His honesty was lambasted as rhetoric. He was abused by Phil Gould and others, smashed for not being able to wave his wand and save all the game's problems.

Gallop wears glasses but he is no Harry Potter. There are no quick fixes to the numerous challenges facing rugby league.

It is all too easy for John Ribot and Brad Fittler to sit back and surmise how the competition should be structured.

On paper it is very easy to compress 16 teams into 12, relocate clubs to Perth and Adelaide, double the TV revenue, or increase the salary cap and stop the flow of stars to French rugby and English Super League.

Sadly, the reality is far more difficult and it is only made more so by the misguided machinations of those who aren't at the front line but are more than happy to lob grenades from afar.

Realistically in business a CEO needs to be a decisive and charasmatic leader, one that portrays the perception that every thing is ok.

David seems a genuinely nice guy who has the best interest at the game at heart, but he is more of a back room power player at heart not a CEO. Unfortuneatley watching him or listening him doesn't make the average fan or player feel comfortable, its a tough job, even the USA cannot get a CEO that the country listens too.

The question is who could do a better job? By the way Quale and Arko are in their 70's...

The nicest thing you could say about Gallop is he might be a decent lawyer.

As a person he lacks everything else.

It's NOT going to die, however it will be repositioned in the importance of sports. The push is already on. The media keeps refering to it as regional whilst the AFL is national, even though it is a minor game to half the country. News get it cheaper. Why do you think the AFL are racing to get two new clubs in before the next TV deal?

Get Brian Houston from the Hillsong church empire to run the game, he certainly knows how to generate millions! ;D

If someone ran a poll of League supporters to see if they had lost confidence in our CEO, it would be a landslide.

Time for The Sinecure to go.

Oh News LTD Oh News LTD your spin is so obvious...

Poor David, forced to do things like talk up AFL and play down rugby league.

Roy Masters has some stats that may make things look brighter for RL David, but I guess you aren't interested in those.

I feel bad to be associated with a sport that has supporters like some of the people on here - Gallop has the hardest job in sport and does it bloody well and all he gets is criticism - which is ok when its about stuff he has done but you see on here so many personal comments about him - which is weak and dog like

Yeah except you are not running the nrl, and you would not know how hard it is.

The nrl has its hands tied, and even if it didn't there is so many people pulling in so many different ways, its not funny....clubs with no money, players who want out because clubs have no money (low salary cap therefore), a joke world cup, poor crowds everywhere except qld.

Wake up to yourselves. The game is up the creek, and the next few years are not about upsetting the balance. That would be suicide.

Consolidate, then grow. League can't consolidate even. In fact, league would have trouble fighting its way out of a wet tissue.

You will never get what being a ceo is like until you have faced the fire, so please keep your mouth closed until then.

Whats next, you would tell us what its like to be a woman?

You dont know.

The NRL has had 10 years of pay TV deals to get its act together.
Gallops hasn't been there for all of it but he has been there long enough. It was the ARL partnership of the board that pushed the Titans team.

Instead of highlighting why AFL get more TV money , Gallop should have gone on the attack also and instead of lsiting capital city ratings he should have listed the regionals as well.

He seems like a fair guy, but his time has come.

I notice you just joined. I take it you're a News Ltd stooge who was instructed by your bosses to talk up David Gallop and the other News Ltd cronies on the NRL and to defend their behaviour?
