Your "League Lockdown" Re-watch

That was a crazy last 5 mins in the Roosters vs Broncos in 1996, Kevin Junees chip and chase try to level the scores then Andrew Gee .

In context...

First MNF game in nearly ten years with it being a genuine "event".

SL Brisbane (Bennett and the star studded Broncos) vs ARL Roosters (Gould with a rebuilding Chooks squad).

Yep...late try. Then that Gee error.

A true RL moment to be remembered.

I have the game somewhere on disc, there were about 35, 000 there from memory, it was a classic game , Peter Jorgenson scored a great try for Easts in the first half , later in the match with Brisbane leading either 10-4 or 10-6 Alfie Langer sliced through close to the line and was bought down in a classic tackle, then the spectacler try from Junee with Andrew Walker shaping to kick then running the ball instead which gave Junee space up the wing to pull off a spectacular try to level the scores, Cleary missed the goal from the side line, but we all know what happened a couple of minutes after that :grin:Interesting stastic from that match was that Easts won the penalty count 9-0.

I'm going to watch Canterbury vs Easts from Belmore Oval back in 1983, Canterbury were leading 20-10 with 9 minutes to go when Mike Eden sidestepped through to score to take the score to 20-16, then with only minutes left on the clock Eden bombed and Marty Gurr took the ball on the full and scored in the corner and as cool as a cucumber Eden converted from the sideline to put Easts in front 22-20, Kevin Hastings kicked a field goal on the siren for Easts to win 23-20.

Roosters vs Souths both thrillers from 2012.

Parra vs saints 2006
Rain soaked 8-1 win to Saints.
Was 1-0, 2-1...

Yes both South vs Roosters were thrillers back in 2012, didn't go the the first game at ANZ as I was driving up the coast early the next morning so went to the Union Hotel to watch It, there was about 5 mins left with South's leading 20-12 and a couple of South's fans walked past me and went nah nah nah and the left the pub thinking the game was over, what a shame they didn't stay till the end.
Exact opposite for the next game at the SFS which I went to, Easts leading 22-12 with 2 minutes to go and Nathan Merrit scores to make it 22-18, thought Easts would still be ok with only seconds left on the clock but from the kick off South's threw the ball around and scored a spectacular try to win 24-22.

That Saints vs Parra match was a great game considering the conditions.

1985 Challenge Cup - Wigan (Kenny) v Hull FC (Sterlo)
1987(?) Origin Game ??? - The King had been bagged from pillar to post for not running and he lit it up. The Blues still won, 21-15 I think, but the game was a cracker.

Watch the 1987 Challenge Cup Final, which was a great contest. It has been overlooked but I actually think it was a better game then the 1985 final.

Why does it have to be one, I can think of hundreds in all 3 categories:

Anyway:

Eels: 2009 Preliminary Final against the Bulldogs
Neutral: 1997 ARL Grand Final
Rep game: Tough game but the 2013 World Cup Semi Final, NZ Vs England.

I agree the 2013 semi was one of the greatest games of the modern era.

Game 2 1990 Kangaroo Tour Australia vs GB at Old Trafford. Best game of league ever IMO, and like when I watched it back then, I’d get up and watch at 2am on my own on the lounge..

Game 100 of state of origin at Lang Park (yes, not Suncorp), including all pre-game tribute stuff (spine tingling). Out and out most brutal and high quality game of origin for mine.

1981 Semi final Manly vs Newtown. Speaks for itself.

EDIT: Overlooked categories to choose from - must pick a dragons game...

Replace game 100 of origin (sadly) with 2012 Anzac Day Dragons win over Roosters on the bell.. the sound the crowd made was unlike any other I’ve experienced.

Agree about 1990 game, still enjoy watching it 30 years on.

Another great test is the 2nd Test of 1985 Australia v NZ with Ribot scoring in the last seconds.

Infact all 3 games of that series were great games.

I was watching the 1966 GF on the NRL site. St George vs Balmain. It's the earliest one they have. They say the rules were changed to stop St George winning every year but didn't the game need them to change. This match, the game's showpiece, got 61,000 and wasn't televised at all, not even on delay. This is what the lucky 61,000 saw.

Kick off. St George knock on. Scrum. St George feed and win scrum. Another knock on. St George knock on, feed and win scrum. Another knock on. Scrum. Balmain penalty. They kick for touch. Scrum. St George win scrum and knock on. Scrum. Balmain penalty. Keith "Golden Boots" Barnes kicks the goal. Balmain lose ball after kick off. St George put about 20 tackles together (unlimited tackles you see, the last match played under that rule and understandably so) and eventually score. It was about 10 minutes in when I fell asleep. It looked more like rugby than rugby league. Every time St George played the ball the Tigers marker would try to kick the ball, but it never did them any good. Never did they try to rake it back and win possession. Hard to see how they ran second (of 10 teams) with such adherence to failing tactics.

You can see why the Dragons won the comp 11 years running. You couldn't get the ball off them.

Lucky they changed the rules. Try the 1967 Final and Grand Final these were exciting games to watch with plenty of ball movement.

Interestingly Eden could kick goals with both feet depending his position on the field.

2018 Finals week 1 - Storm v Souths
Maybe I'm biased but this was one of the greatest games of rugby league I've ever seen

Incredible attacking display from both sides, incredible tries. Might try get a hold of this game and give it a re-watch I think.
