I see what you are saying but Soward took a back seat and took a very different role early in the match. Maybe a ploy having him at DH to get his hands on the ball more and build confidence.

He has been through a game now and knows what is required.

They really need Dugan to play a Boyd like role for that right edge to work though and this is why Hayne should have been the fullback to be quite honest

I'd stick with the same side, although keep my fingers crossed that King does the right thing and retires from Rep football before Game 2.

Really unfortunate for Aiden Tolman injuring his knee, I really thought he was next in line for a start

With respect to the right edge I think that Soward has had his game to settle into the pace and intensity of Origin and that his combinations may flow better in game 2

The reason the left was so much better was the ball skills of Bird put Scott on the bench for Creagh. Bring in Lewis or Stewart to play the same role. Bring Hayne in for Morris or Dugan. That 2nd try was just terrible. Weyman in for King. That's about it.

Bearing in mind there won't be wholesale changes, I would hope the following 17 runs out:

1. Dugan
2. Uate
3. Gasnier
4. Jennings
5. Morris (I'd like to see Hayne but Stuart won't go back on his "picking players in their position" stance)
6. Soward
7. Pearce
8. Learoyd-Lahrs
9. Ennis
10. Snowden
11. Scott
12. Bird
13. Gallen

14. Gidley
15. Galloway
16. Creagh
17. Mannah

Young wasn't up to it, Gidley is a superior utility and Young isn't good enough as a back-rower to oust Creagh so pretty fair that he gets the chop.

King is woefully out of his depth - TLL should earn a recall.

Merrin isn't ready, was solid enough in defence but you could have been forgiven for forgetting he was out there.

I don't believe Scott offers anything to the side other than his defence - we had NOTHING on that right edge at all last night, but come game 2 I'd be hoping Gaz is ready to spurt sauce otherwise he'll get the chop - but I'll keep Scott there for one more shot.

3 changes in total, including just one (two if you include Ennis starting) to the starting side.

I quite like that team. Solid, I think Gaz had the kid on his mind more then anything. Whilst Boyd was all over him Gaz looked distracted at times was off his game.

I think sticky will keep the team as is with only change "hopefully" being King and Ennis/Young for Gidley obviously.

Gal can't be captain though....he's too "mediocre" Need someone who will assert the role and let Gallen not lead by example and snap some bones so to speak.

Ricky can turn this around for us and turn NSW into a machine of a team. Believe it or not.....

I think Gallen is anything but mediocre. He makes fantastic metres every game, he is agressive and he likes to give his players a good laughl; pass forward ingoals while the whole QLD team is running at him. I think he is a great choice for captain.

Gasnier

Soward
Pearce
TLL
Ennis
Snowden
Scott
Bird
Gallen

Farah
Mannah - and give him decent game time FFS
Merrin
Lewis

TLL and Lewis were incumbents only left out due to fitness concerns so I figure that makes it only two changes. Hayne for Morris which should have been the way the first friggen place and Farah for Young who is nowhere near being an origin hooker. His ability to play backrow is pointless when all 4 other backrowers can easily play the 80

For me most of the changes that should be made aren't focused on taking out the players who aren't up to it, but about bringing in the blokes that should have or would have been there barring injuries. Hanging on like we did or playing average or passable football isn't going to win you games.

Jarryd Hayne is the most obvious one, especially considering his past form in Origin and Morris' vast lack of ability in rep matches.

Luke Lewis is one of the best backrowers going around. Having him play on the other side of the field to Bird will give NSW two damaging runners on the edges. Lewis regularly features in defensive highlight packages as well, which will go along way to helping solve the problem of our soft forwards. If just one more Panthers player showed the heart he did against Wests then they win.

Watmough, despite being a dick, is a brilliant footballer and has runs on the board in Origin. Our forward pack was soft in game 1, both running the ball (outside Bird and Gallen) and in defence (again, everyone outside Bird and Gallen). Watmough is definitely a bloke that can and will change that.

Learoyd-Lahrs plays his rep games like a man possessed. Like Watmough, he's a bloke who will dent the line and hurt QLD as opposed to offering up a cuddle to the QLD forwards.

Those guys are players that were mistakes to leave out (injury withstanding). The next selections are based purely around personal thoughts and arguments could be made either way for selections.

Robbie Farah is the best option. Yes Ennis improved NSW's game when he came on but anyone could have taken the dummy half roll from shithouse to the minimum you'd expect. NSW aren't going to win the game by playing OK and that's all Ennis did. You could mount a case for dropping Ennis based on three involvements: dropping the ball in QLD's 20, kicking early and shit in the count giving QLD possession and position, and providing but a speed bump for Matt Scott before Slater's try. NSW need something from dummy half but Ennis can't provide it.

Jarrod Mullen should be in the halves. While this is only Soward's first Origin and really only his second rep jumper, I had two things on my mind before the game. One being how he went missing in City-Country (his chance to step up and nail an Origin spot) and the other how he (and other young Dragons players) would perform outside the extremely disciplined play of Saints.

He barely got involved in the first half, the stuff about Pearce not giving him ball is rubbish, the halves played left and right. Although behind a rubbish pack, his kicking game looked like any other long kicking game. This was meant to be his saving grace. We were meant to be able to get QLD under pressure because of Soward's kicking game. This didn't happen because he wasn't involved and when he was his kicking was nothing special. His non-involvement was a major factor in our right side being very average.

Soward's chance at securing an Origin jumper went missing a few rounds ago and I believe it was firmly snapped by his partner in Mullen. He dominated not only the Country team but the game as well. That rep game and his form this year should have seen him wearing 6 for the series.

Chris Houston was on the verge of Blues selection before his year off and performed very strongly for Country. He's got ability to play tight or outwide and while certainly bring intensity. Beau Scott racked up a decent tackle count but how many tackles did he dominate or hurt QLD with? Ashley Harrison played the easiest game he'll ever play in Origin because Scott didn't tackle with any venom all night. Most of his tackles saw him take a few steps back before contact. He was certainly not alone in this regard but for someone who can't run the ball very well at all, his lack of intensity in defence was useless and QLD ran at him all night for soft contact and good rucks.

The obvious selection that needs to happen is getting rid of Jason King. While he tried to get on top of QLD in defence, he's just not up to it. With Tolman injured Keith Galloway should work his way into the team and fight it out with Mannah for a starting spot.

NSW had a few major problems. Our forwards were soft in attack and defence; one of our halves wasn't involved and our whole right side suffered; and we had next to no creativity out of dummy half.

Gallen, as strong as he is, should have a stint on the bench during the game. While most backrowers these days can play 80 minutes, in Origin it's never 80 quality minutes. Ben Hannant made 120m in 33 minutes, he's a great example of how going very hard with some bench time can result in greater quality overall. The ability of Lewis and Watmough should see Bird have a break as well.

So, with that in mind:

Dugan; Hayne, Gasnier, Jennings, Uate; Mullen, Pearce; Gallen, Bird, Lewis, Galloway, Farah, Snowden. Learoyd-Lahrs, Houston, Mannah, Watmough.

I think we'd be wise to find room for carney and hayne.

Easily the two most dangerous players we have.

1-Hayne
2-Uate
3-Jennings
4-Idris (average in defence but Gasnier was atrocious)
5-Dugan (played ok, but was shown up badly with his positioning especially. Plenty of fullbacks do fine on the wing, I think he will too.)
6-Soward
7-Pearce
8-Mannah (better starting IMO...he's better laying a platform)
9-Ennis
10-Snowden
11-Scott
12-Bird
13-Gallen

14-Lewis
15-Merrin
16-Creagh
17-TLL

I wouldn't make mass changes, especially in key areas like the halves. We made our bed, there's no point chopping and changing in that area IMO. I think we lacked strike, Hayne and Idris offer that. I hate picking Idris but honestly we need someone there who isn't Gasnier. Pity Gordon is injured! Dugan on the wing would work fine, he's strong under the high ball and has all the attributes of a successful Origin winger...he can score a try, he's big and strong and fast.

Hayne on wing.
Dugan on fullback.

That would be way to go. Hayne can play a roving FB/ Winger with some explosive action of the side while Dugan grabs the bombs and passes of the play. Best way to go....

Being a Knights fan (and most of us would agree) NSW should stay far away from Mullen and House as possible. They aren't ready yet. Trust me. Pearce and Soward did fine. They didn't own the game but they are warming into their roles. This year stick with them. We'll see what happens next year when WB comes in. I think next year it should be Mullen and Soward in the halves, maybe for a very long time. Both have been trained by WB and hopefully we'll see some Lockyer about them.
