    KFC or kia?

Actually, don't think you understand sponsorship. It isn't just about prostituting your brand to the highest bidder, it's also about positioning your brand. If you go with a down market brand it sends the message that your brand is down market, if you go with a premium brand it sends the...

    New NRL Logo?

I would have preferred they kept the old typeface as the NRL was a strong word mark. The new typeface looks like it is trying too hard to be modern and so will date badly.

Another one for you Raiders fans

As a raiders fan it pains me to say this but this shambles of a club has no place in a professional sporting competition in this day and age. Raiders fans may not have voting rights, but surely Queanbeyan leagues club members do and can vote these people out?

The T.V Rights Thread Part III

I know Saturday night news isn't anywhere near as big as Sunday night, but I would have thought a 4pm Saturday arvo slot would be a lot better for FTA than 3.30. How are they going to hold NRL viewers between the game finishing and the 6pm news? They are all going to switch over to the 5.30...

The T.V Rights Thread Part III

Doc not sure if you've mentioned this in the past, but has the nrl considered dealing PMG/fox sports out of the game by packaging it's own channel and selling the channel direct to Foxtel? NRL has been a massive cash cow for them and it seems NRL could take the cut that PMG have been gouging...

The T.V Rights Thread Part III

That would make very interesting reading. I think what a lot of people don't appreciate is that NRL doesn't just drive subscriptions in NSW and Qld, but across Australia. In the last 5 or 10 years the number of people moving from RL states to Perth and Melbourne in particular has...

The TV rights thread part II

The other advantage of formalising existing breaks in play and using them for advertising is that advertisers will pay a premium for a 15 or 30 second ad during play that they won't pay for a traditional ad in the middle of a 3 minute block. This may already be factored into the additional 350m...

    Minor Cities and the NRL

The ideal vehicle for taking games to regional centres and emerging markets is a proper preseason cup replacing the trial games. This would also be another property to sell to sponsors and TV (tooheys cup, nab cup, panasonic cup, etc). Drop the nrl back to 22 rounds, pair clubs with a...

    Crusaders Leave SuperLeague

Yes true but it's a rhetorical device to make the point. Would the RFL have expanded to Bridgend if Leighton Samuel wasn't looking to stick one up the WRU? No way in the world. You would have to say no, because there a range of other locations that would stack up much better, sugar daddy...

    Crusaders Leave SuperLeague

Of course it was an issue. Yes the management was shithouse but even excellent management would have struggled to get sufficient crowds to go anywhere near breaking even in small non RL cities like bridgend and wrexham.

    Crusaders Leave SuperLeague

You can choose where you expand to, and go to places with a large potential upside. Gateshead, bridgend and wrexham just aren't places that are large enough to sustain top tier clubs, given their lack of support for RL. Places like Melbourne can and London can (sort of) overcome the lack of...

    Crusaders Leave SuperLeague

Agreed. It was blindingly obvious from the beginning that the crusaders were living on borrowed time. There was no compelling business plan, just a sugar daddy that wanted to stick one up the wru. Bridgend or wrexham should hardly have been the sort of places that the game would have...

    Raking

Raking should be allowed, not because it is a good thing in and of itself, but because of the subsequent effects. If raking was allowed, attacking players would need to be more careful with how they play the ball. This would mean less messy play the balls. It would also slightly slow the play...

RL independence day arrives - NRL Independent Commission announced for November 1

I agree, but as Colin Love said in the article above, that clause has to mean a reasonable time after. Clearly news got advice that was the likely interpretation the courts would take as well. As an aside. I'm not a news ltd shareholder but if I was I would attend their AGM and ask them to...

RL independence day arrives - NRL Independent Commission announced for November 1

Not really, it was at the earlier of 20 years or the repayment of the "investment" whichever comes first. Obviously after Roy asked news those questions they got advice that they couldn't walk away from that commitment and therefore went to plan b, the independent commission.

RL independence day arrives - NRL Independent Commission announced for November 1

The ARL signed all the clubs to a 5 year loyalty agreement in 1994. That was ruled invalid as a breach of the trade practices act. That's how super league eventually was allowed to go ahead. Signing the clubs (two of which are owned by news, so wouldn't sign anyway) up to a 25 year loyalty...

    Briers calls for GB return

For the record I don't propose the RU model like the observer suggests. I prefer the rugby league model of the early seventies to 1995 or so. Regular home nations/ European cup games, coming together for both inbound and outbound tours, and separate for world cups.

    Briers calls for GB return

Better off how, by having promising players that would otherwise represent wales turn their backs on the principality and represent England instead? Welsh rugby league is better served by a great Britain team. You can keep telling yourself the current situation was the way to go, but it's...

    Briers calls for GB return

Either way, wales aren't in the four nations. With great Britain in the four nations, people could play for both wales and great Britain. As it is now, they just play for England. So wales are worse off than they would otherwise be. Fairly simple really.

    Briers calls for GB return

Briers is dead right of course. It should have been blindingly obvious this is what would happen. I pointed it out at the time. For all the Richard Lewis man love on here, people would have to admit him not realizing the implications of scrapping the gb team would have is a large black mark...
