Victa return as Western Suburbs sponsor symbolises Wests Tigers power shift, Roy Masters wants home games change

IN a throwback to the glory days of the late ’70s and early ’80s, Western Suburbs will once again wear black and white jerseys emblazoned with the iconic Victa name in 2018.
It’s just the latest in a long chain of events that has started to redress the power balance struck when the Magpies were forced into an uneasy marriage with Balmain to take the field as the Wests Tigers for the first time in 2000.

Almost immediately, dyed in the wool Western Suburbs fans were disenfranchised, with their club cast as the ugly stepsister in a merger that strongly favoured the Tigers.

Eighteen years later and Balmain’s position of strength within the Wests Tigers has slowly but surely eroded, with financial mismanagement leading to a loss of power at board level.

The next step in the changing dynamic will involve more visible changes, starting at NSW Cup level, where the Wests Tigers feeder side will in 2018 play as the Western Suburbs Magpies and wear a black-and-white strip sponsored by Victa.

Tigers > Magpies.
HOWEVER. The whole "wests" over "Western Suburbs" was a brain dead decision.

They should revive ol' Mark the Magpie while they're at it.

Moreso because we share the ground with those clubs. In 2014 tigers v eels drew 51k to a game at ANZ, really that should be the goal when those 4 teams play each other

That's true, Parra will be limited to 30k (or is it 35?)

Do Victa pay anything for the retro sponsorship, or any other company still around?

If not it was the smartest move on their part way back in the 70s/80s.

Mate, pretty sure Victa are paying wests money to have their branding on the jersey again?

Even as an old Balmain fan I’d be in favor of a split something like this:

6 games Campbelltown
3 ANZ (souths/Dogs/parra)
3 Leichhardt

problem with campbelltown is that folks moving in there already have an NRL team, innit? it's not like how canterbury-bankstown area is predominantly bulldogs supporters, manly-warringah is predominantly sea eagles supporters, etc. the people moving into macarthur already have their clubs and it's more varied. but yes, Tigers/Magpies really need to make an effort to make this area theirs and boost the games allocation that will promote this. It will take time.

Wasn't half the problem the clubs had with the Retro jerseys that they were out selling club jerseys AND giving free advertising to long gone sponsors? Plus they were made with warm cotton and not the plastic they use now. Can't see why fans would flock to them. Plus who doesn't love a Victa Wests jersey, or a Souths Smiths Crisps, or a Balmain Phillips jersey etc? The colours and design were king rad!!!
