It's a best and fairest comp. Scratch Maloney because he's the most penalised player in the game. Norman mainly played half this year - scratch him. Keary played well in patches but i never saw him put in a full 80 minute effort - scratched. Green plays for Manly - scratched.

That leaves Munster and Widdop. Munster has the misfortune of being a good player in a team with great players - he will rarely stand out like Widdop does. So while I think there are better 5/8's around, I totally understand why Widdop would get the award. He's had a good season and deserves it.

Exactly Johnno, thanks for saving me a bunch of typing...

Unfortunately, Johnno's post is full of fluff that just doesn't make sense.
1. Norman played 5/8 most of the year with Moses at halfback.
2. Easts and Keary's patchy form were runners up to Melbourne.
3. "Green plays for Manly - scratched" is that even a serious comment?
4. Munster was a Melbourne standout and you know it. He'll play the GF at 5/8.
So by Johnno's process of elimination, Widdop gets the gong?

So don't hold back - type away.
I'm curious to see what you have to say.

Sounds like we agree over Maloney at least.

1. Norman played half for at least 10 rounds with Gutherson at five-eight until Moses arrived.
2. Not debating Easts patchy form. My comment was that I never saw Keary play a solid 80 minutes. He would do a few good things but never took control of a game or stood out particularly. My opinion.
3. No it's not a serious comment. The serious comment is I didn't watch Manly play much so can't really comment on Green's form.
4. Agree Munster is a stand out. But when they allocate the three/two/one points during a Storm game, there is always a good chance that Smith/Slater/Cronk are going to get the points and Munster will miss out.

I stand by my comments. I don't think Widdop is the best 5/8 running around, but he's had a good season, and I can understand why he won. I think it's deserved.

Sorry I accidentally posted the above, since I'm writing this I'll say congrats to Widdop, well deserved. But, for mine the acid test for Widdop is consistency, to be the player who stands up in the big games, in the big moments, if him and Hunt do this we could be the real deal ets then I'll gladly sing his praises and call him one of the great d 5/8's

Shame he couldn't get us home at the business end of the season but with a decent half next year, hopefully things are different. Great effort Gaz!
Mary,Dugan, Packer all costs us games at the halfway mard of the season. Lafai dropped form and McCrone ws still there and Mann was not. Dufty would have made a difference. A couple of young props should have been used on rotation early in the season to relieve Packer and Ah Mau - I don't think we could have done well without Vaughan. McInnes seemed to be operating under instruction from about halfway through to the end of the season - he stopped running and kicking.

The successful 'power game' plan worked will for about 8 games and then forwards were burnt or busted. Mary reverted to the 2016 plan 'his plan' and say not more.

OK - comments make more sense now.
I don't give a lot of weight to these awards but the title of "best" should mean something.
A couple of minor points:
(a) I did see most of Manly's games all be it on TV. Green was outstanding as he was at Melbourne last year.
(b) I get that Munster is in a star studded team that makes it hard for him to rack up Daly M points however Team of the Year is chosen by an "Expert Panel" of ex players and does not have any points system.
So in the fair dinkum department, Munster was a stand out week in week out and should've got the nod at 5/8, In my opinion of course
For the club's sake I hope Widdop can gel with Hunt next year.
Relieve him of the captaincy, let Hunt lead the team around the park and we just might see the best of GW and better results on the board.
BTW - totally agree about Maloney - fierce competitor but a penalty magnet.

Dally M Awards at The Star .Picture :NRL Photos / Gregg Porteous

St George Illawarra skipper Gareth Widdop took home the 2017 Dally M Five-eighth of the Year for the first time on Wednesday night.

Widdop – who beat out the likes of Rooster Luke Keary and Eel Corey Norman – was on hand at the Star Casino in Pyrmont to receive his award alongside the other positional award winners.

The English international also managed to finish third overall (24 points) on the Dally M Leaderboard – which was eventually won by Storm skipper Cameron Smith.

Widdop was the only player to pose a real threat to Smith's eventually second Dally M Medal win after he jumped to the lead after 20 rounds.

Though in the end Widdop's knee injury suffered against the Roosters on Anzac Day came back to haunt him – after the 28-year-old was forced to miss three games and England's Test against Samoa earlier in 2017.

Dragons forwards Paul Vaughan, Tyson Frizell and Tariq Sims were nominated and unfortunate not to win Dally M Prop, Second-rower and Try of the Year respectively.

Young Dragons star Tristan Sailor was also beaten out for Holden Cup Player of the Year.

The full list of winners was as followed:

Captain of the Year: Cameron Smith (Melbourne Storm)
Peter Moore Award for Rookie of the Year: Nick Cotric (Canberra Raiders)
Holden Cup Player of the Year: Jake Clifford (North Queensland Cowboys)
Top Points Scorer: Nathan Cleary (Penrith Panthers)
Top Try Scorer: Suliasi Vunivalu (Melbourne Storm)
Tackle of the Year: Nathan Brown (Parramatta Eels)
Try of the Year: Kyle Feldt (North Queensland Cowboys)
Coach of the Year: Craig Bellamy (Melbourne Storm)
Peter Frilingos Headline Moment: Mitchell Pearce (Sydney Roosters)
Provan Summons People's Choice Medal: Clinton Gutherson (Parramatta Eels)
Female Player of the Year: Simaima Taufa (Jillaroos)
Fullback of the Year: Billy Slater (Melbourne Storm)
Winger of the Year: Jordan Rapana (Canberra Raiders)
Centre of the Year: Dylan Walker (Manly Sea Eagles)
Five-eighth of the Year: Gareth Widdop (St George Illawarra Dragons)
Halfback of the Year: Michael Morgan (North Queensland Cowboys)
Lock of the Year: Paul Gallen (Cronulla Sharks)
Second-rower of the Year: Matt Gillett (Brisbane Broncos)
Prop of the Year: Aaron Woods (Wests Tigers)
Hooker of the Year: Cameron Smith (Melbourne Storm)
Interchange Player of the Year: Reagan Campbell-Gillard (Penrith Panthers)
Dally M Player of the Year: Cameron Smith (Melbourne Storm)

Are you sure that's how they pick the team of the year? I thought they took the Dally M points you were awarded for each game against the position you were playing, and tallied them for the whole season. Otherwise it does not make sense that Woods got Prop, Gallen got lock, Rapana got winger and Widdop got 5/8. In the fair dinkum department, none of them are the best in their respective positions.

I stand corrected. Panel was last year.
Widdop came 3rd in the Dally M so with Morgan chosen at halfback, he gets the 5/8 gong.
Apologies all round.

So Widdop was the only St. George player to be selected in Team of the Year as best 5/8 in the whole comp.
So players like Munster, Keary, Norman, Green and Maloney are all rated below Widdop?
Yet none of our forwards got a look in.
Doesn't make any sense to me...

One.

Perhaps, just perhaps, the judges and the rest of the world don't cast as harsh an eye over our players as this forum does.

Widdop is a good player, he had a good season, he'll be in the England team and hopefully with a good halfback and his big pommy mate by his side next year he'll be even better.
