I think that Bennett should be signed on as head coach with mary as assistant. Price failed because he tried to stick to what bennett tried. We know price is not bennett. Mary took over and immediately had success because he is his own man and a leader. He made changes that almost immediately had success which shows balls. I think under bennett mary will become a great coach.

My only worry is as assistant coach will the players respect him as head coach.

I've been burned at the stake for even questioning the signing of Bennett so I'm glad to see some intelligent debate or thought going into it now. His second coming isn't black & white like his 1st one. As I stated I'm concerned about his results with the Knight's as Bennett has identified himself but also the last 14 games with us. I'm also concerned of us borrowing 6.5 mil when after 3yrs successful years with 2 minor premierships I thought we should be in reasonable shape. Not against signing Bennett but it comes with more risk this time around where as the 1st time was a lay down misére

What do you mean where you state "Not against signing Bennett but it comes with more risk this time around where as the 1st time was a lay down mezzare"?

Disagree that you're as good as your last gig. Wayne is the best in the business at getting the best out of players, bar none. His support staff, particularly Hickman, are the best in the business.

I dont think it will be anything like last time he was here, where we had a mature squad who had missed by that much for years. Weve got a young squad saturated in both talent and potential..we've got good juniors who will be ready in a few years, and weve got some younger up-and-coming coaches who have the technical knowledge of the game and leadership skills to become great coaches in time (Young Jnr, Hornbag and Mary). He may bring in a couple of older players for experience and leadership, but unless he hets rid of 80% of the team, we will be fine in the aftermath.

Spot on. I hope that if Benny does come, he doesn't cut guys like Stockwell/DeBelin/Runciman loose. I'd much rather guys like Harrison/Groat/Hunt/Ailomai/Green/Stanley be let go to make way for some grunt in the pack.

There were almost zero potential negatives the 1st time, this time there are more considerations. Recent form of Bennett (over the last 3.5 seasons), are we in a position to afford it, are we in a position to sign Boyd and at what cost & the team has turned around their performances under Mary. I would still sign Bennett but last time it seemed he came with the aura of a certain premiership and this time it doesn't feel quite the same

That's a good link Possm from the SMH. It gives a balanced and likely true version of events.
There is some garbage floating around in the NRL forum from seriously butt hurt supporters from other clubs claiming we shouldn't be allowed to sign him if we are borrowing money...massive dickheads.
The two highly speculative articles this morning from two less than credible 'journalists', are nothing more than a thinly veiled attack on our club and perhaps even a little snipe from the NRL towards us and Bennett.

This might be an issue. Ultimately the opportunity of Bennett as a head coach is too good to pass for the club in its current state. Atleast now they can be mindful of the fact that better planning is needed for Bennett's depature if he returns.

I kinda appreciate where you're coming from, I know of it happening to one very special team..I won't say because I don't want to jinx it..I am still willing to take the punt!
We must remember St Benny has the back line to cause damage.

Thats a sound post.

Its a commercial gamble either way.

We are also ( i think ) , reliving the Price era too much. IE, just cause he failed, doesnt mean Mary will.

Its cuts both ways.

Where the club is at now, i feel Wayne is best placed to steady the ship, re-build confidence in sponsors, players and fans. Mary would be well served to work closely with Wayne, as he to date has shown promise in the area of coaching.

Sometimes, one needs to take a step back in order to take two forward.

Disagree that you're as good as your last gig. Wayne is the best in the business at getting the best out of players, bar none. His support staff, particularly Hickman, are the best in the business.

Love your work Gentlemen!

If they can't pay his contract outright then he shouldn't be signed how true these rumours about money troubles why on earth would you make an investement you can't actually pay for ie the Knights.

To me no question over the years he has done well wherever he has been but now I question his tactics and his age he's 64 and imo the game has nearly passed him by.

If he comes and at the very least passes the knowledge onto Mary or whoever and they still have an influence when Bennett is coaching then I see benefits.

Like others my concern is will he get rid of the wrong players to bring in older ones he brought in experience at the Knights and to some degree it has worked but people like Mason and co well past it.

Do whatever it takes to sign Wayne Bennett: Fien

By MITCH JENNINGS

July 13, 2014, 6:31 p.m.

Wayne Bennett will leave Newcastle at the end of the year.

Premiership player Nathan Fien has urged his former club to throw everything at luring Wayne Bennett back to Wollongong.
St George Illawarra chief executive Peter Doust is expected to ramp up moves to re-sign Bennett this week after the seven-time premiership coach announced he would leave Newcastle at the end of the year.
A likely $1 million per year contract with the club he won the 2010 title is only likely to be torpedoed by a lucrative late offer from Queensland NRL rivals Brisbane or the Gold Coast.
However, the Dragons are under financial pressure, after asking the NRL for assistance and taking games away from their home bases at Wollongong and Kogarah for the cash injections provided by playing at major Sydney stadiums.
Fien was a member of the New Zealand test team that Bennett helped steer to an upset victory over Australia in the 2008 World Cup final and linked with him in Wollongong the following year en route to the 2010 premiership.
He said he was ‘‘excited’’ by the prospect of Bennett returning to the club, labelling it a positive move.
‘‘Wayne’s obviously a fantastic coach. I can’t speak highly enough of him and what he can do for a footy side and for individuals,’’ Fien said.
‘‘He definitely knows how to get the best out of his players and he definitely got that out of me.
‘‘You can’t take anything away from what Mary’s [Paul McGregor] done with the team since he’s taken over. ‘‘He’s done outstanding so it’ll be interesting to see what they do but obviously Wayne would add a lot.’’
Fien laughed off suggestions Bennett is a spent force as a coach follwing an underwhelming three years in Newcastle and said the Knights would be far worse off had Bennett not been at the helm as on and off-field turmoil engulfed the club this year.
‘‘You only have to look back to last year and Newcastle went to within one game of the grand final,’’ Fien said.
‘‘I don’t think any club [without Bennett] would have handled the turmoil that the Knights have faced this year, firstly with Russell Packer and then Alex McKinnon and the Tinkler stuff.
‘‘Those things weigh on player’s minds and also on coaching staff so it was always going to be an uphill battle for the Knights this year.’’
Bennett’s desire not to oust an exsiting coach makes the Dragons, with McGregor in an interim role, a seemingly ideal fit but the short-term success of the rookie coach - who as long-term coach would come with far lower price tag - could be an obstacle to Bennett’s return.
Fien threw his support behind the suggested model that would see McGregor, and his 2010 premiership winning teammates Dean Young and Ben Hornby, remain on the coaching staff with a view to a long-term successor.
Fien was part of a mass exodus of experienced players who retired in the seasons following Bennett’s departure as the Dragons missed the finals for consecutive seasons under his successor Steve Price.
He said Bennett’s succession would need to be better managed if he did decide to return.
‘‘They need to plan ahead because obviously Wayne’s not going to be around forever so that succession plan needs to be put in place about who’s going to take over because there’s question marks over whether that was done at the end of his last tenure,’’ Fien said.

I'd like to say a few things in regards to the current comments on Bennett:
1. Bennett came from the Broncos - a club that had not one a premiership in his last few years as coach.
2. Bennett said himself that Brown the squad in good shape and so the job was not so difficult.
3. Bennett had Price as assistant coach for 3 years and tried to teach him the skills needed to go well.
4. Price DID NOT follow in the footsteps of Bennett's coaching methods, he tried to do his own thing instead.
5. I believe the only way for the Club to get out of it's financial mess is to become successful again. under Bennett we have the best chance.
6. A third party sponsor is financing Bennett's contract so his salary is not an extra cost to the Club.

Had time to really think about a Bennett return. Bennett had said in his interview that he had failed to get the Knights to where he wanted them to be . So he has decided to bail out, saying they need a younger coach that will need more time.Cant understand Bennett has been at the club for 2 to 3 years [not sure] and is probably wanting another 3 years with us, so what I am saying is it not enough time to build a team in a 5 to 6 year period ? I dont think Bennett is what we need now.He comes for 3 years then leaves do we then fall apart again after he goes and in that period we might not win a premiership. Bennett is after a easy run home for himself otherwise he would have stuck it out for another couple of years with the Knights... No I dont want Bennett back..............,

We don't actually know the details though. Is he being sponsored or is the loan recoupable? If recoupable then we still are spending our money. No point in guessing though I'm sure things will become clearer in the next 2 weeks
