If the board want to make up for the last 2.5 years of lost time and gain the benefits of the financial side of things that Bennett will bring back to the club and watch out redv memberships go through the roof, then Bennett is a must.

Bennett as coaching director will select his own coaching staff and recruit, re-sign and let go players.

The appointment of Bennett would improve the fortunes of our Club, both on the field and off the field.

No contest it is simple, sign Bennett.

I hope he retains Mary as he's earnt his place and will benefit from the experience of working with Bennett. IMO I don't think Bennett would go to any club unless he can make immediate adjustment to the roster. There still is no indication he will return though its now wide open. If he does I wonder what Boyd will do, I don't care either way just curious

With Bennett's reluctance for media hype,it won't surprise me if he pulls one out of left field and returns to Qld for a backroom role at the Bronco's or retires outright.
Or come back to us where he belongs.

NEWCASTLE’S incapacity to honour the final season of Wayne Bennett’s $1 million-a-year contract is set to hand the master coach back to St George Illawarra, which tabled a three-year offer for his second coming last month.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal Dragons CEO Peter Doust reached out to Bennett as recently as a fortnight ago, on the same weekend as Newcastle’s previous match against Parramatta.

The seven-time premiership winner has been in limbo since control of the Knights was handed-over to the NRL in May, around the same time St George Illawarra told former coach Steve Price his services were no longer required.

The Dragons have been pushing hard for Bennett to rejoin the club ever since, having not made the finals following his departure at the end of 2011. The most successful coach in rugby league history delivered the joint venture its maiden premiership the previous season, and enjoyed a free reign over the football department under Doust.

It’s believed the Dragons offer is a three-year deal worth more than $3 million. Doust wanted an answer prior to the Origin series finishing, and Thursday’s announcement that Bennett would not be at Newcastle in 2015 indicates a response is getting closer.

Bennett informed the entire Knights team of his intention to move-on on Thursday morning, but selected senior players sensed he was preparing to leave several weeks ago.

The 64-year-old said he was departing because of embarrassment over Newcastle’s performance under his watch, but there are also commercial reasons for the move.
Running a tight rule over the club’s books, NRL bean counters decided the Knights could not afford to keep Bennett on the same terms he had enjoyed under former owner Nathan Tinkler.

That left Bennett with the choice of whether to accept a sizeable pay cut and stay, or look elsewhere. Given his standing in the game, there was always going to be interest outside the Hunter.

Bennett’s next move has effectively boiled down to a choice between his two former clubs — St George Illawarra and Brisbane.

The Broncos, however, are not likely to offer Bennett a head coaching role as they have Anthony Griffin contracted until the end of 2015. It’s understood Bennett’s potential role at Brisbane would be coaching director. That leaves the Dragons as overwhelming favourites to snare him.

Their rich offer for Bennett is at odds with financial hardship that has struck the joint venture over the past 18 months, during which time it has been forced to rely on a $1.5 million loan from the NRL. The Dragons have also been forced to shift four matches from their spiritual bases in Kogarah and Wollongong, to ANZ Stadium, for financial gain.

A well-placed Dragons source has claimed a private benefactor is funding the Bennett bid. St George Illawarra also made a huge — and narrowly unsuccessful — play for Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy last year.

Caretaker coach Paul McGregor is likely to win the job on a permanent basis should Bennett also knock them back. “At the time of announcing Paul McGregor as caretaker coach ... we also advised that we would be undertaking a detailed process to identify the head coach for next season and beyond,” Doust said. “We don’t believe it appropriate to speculate on our progress.”

QUEENSLAND Origin star Darius Boyd is poised to follow coach Wayne Bennett’s lead and quit the Newcastle Knights at the end of the season.

Bennett stunned the club on Thursday by announcing that after three years at the helm, this season will be his last in Newcastle. But he won’t be the only big-name departure.

While there will be no official confirmation just yet, The Daily Telegraph has learned Boyd has privately made it known he won’t be at the club in 2015 despite having a year to run on his $600,000 a season contract and is ready to activate a get-out clause.

The improvement can't be disputed and we have beaten Melb twice this year albiet more convincingly since Mary took over. I don't know there's any expectation of beating the top 4 sides but at full strength there's nothing to say we can't either now. I think we showed good composure against the Cowboys when we had only 25% possession during that middle 25min period of the game. We're building nicely but if we don't beat Manly I won't be slitting my wrists that we weren't good enough only just for the fact I hate Manly and want to beat them

Mary hasn't earnt anything yet. I'm just going to cut and paste this excellent post by Saint Doc, as it appears to be in a language you understand (ie facts only, no abstract thought).

"He beat the sharks, price beat the sharks
He beat the storm, price beat* the storm
He beat titans and cowboys minus origin players, price beat warriors, tigers

He hasn't faced a tough team yet other than panthers and Souths and we lost

If price hadn't ever had to face the dogs (twice), roosters, broncos etc then he'd still be in a job.

Two of our next 3 games are against last year's grand finalists. Judge him after those games. If we can win 2/3 vs manly, tigers and roosters, then he deserves a shot. If we win zero or one, we are no better off than price's record."

Spot on Doc.

Are u really a Dragons supporter seriously? No I mean it....are you really?

Really it's sickening to respond to this crap but there it is in front of me from a so called Dragons supporter! The same negativity over and over!

Price
Dragons 14 Sharks 12
Mcgregor
Dragons 30 Sharks 0

Price
Melb 28 Dragons 24
Mcgregor
Dragons 24 Melb 12

We beat the Titans and Cowboys minus Origin players and injuries as well!

Panthers are leading the comp and we got beat on conversions without 2 origin players and Frizell was out for the game after 12mins. Penrith had no Origin commitments

Re: Souths, Mary had been given the position on Tues and had to be in camp with the blues on Wed and then come back to the Dragons....are you guys really serious quoting that as a failure???

The rest of it doesn't deserve my time to comment but this does.....

Go look yourself in the mirror Illa and try to find something that warrants your existence or ffs think, grow up, take meds or whatever it takes to stop this crap you promote even though this is not your post your stupidty is all over it

When will you support the team and coach when they are doing well???

If we beat any of the top sides its a bonus, no one ever said we were contenders this year so why is beating them a measure of our success? Thank god these people don't and aren't capable of coaching!

I'd say our forum members are a smart bunch of Dragons supporters; selecting Bennett as their most popular choice in this poll.

Looks like Bennett will get the job and our might Dragons will be non their way to greatness once again.

FFS, when a fan tries to look at things objectively, instead of using blind faith as a medium of reasoning, it doesn't mean he's not a true fan.

Stop sucking Mary's dick. Nobody is saying he is a shit coach; what we are saying is he hasn't done *enough* yet to warrant a new long term contract. The Eels used your logic in 2009 with Daniel Mortimer after he came in and made a big difference to the side. Everyone started hailing him and Hayne as the messiahs. He hasn't reached those heights ever since. It's one thing to get the boys up for 6 games, it's another thing to be able do it over a long term like the truly great coaches do.

I'm sorry, but when you choose to rush in and hand a long term contract to an absolute rookie with 6 games experience, you are displaying a severe lack of foresight, a severe amount of rashness.

Bennett hasn't even spoken to the club and people are talking about greatness and the like how funny.

The team is going in a better direction is it the right one I don't know for sure but this whole Bennett will bring back greatness is such a stretch its ridiculous.

The team now is so different from the one he inherited 4 years ago its alot younger with alot less experience and alot of fine tuning to do if he does decide to sign on again.

The players have responded to Mary at least thats a plus they seem to have a better understanding of what they are trying to do and don't look as lost as they previously did under Price.

Does that warrant Mary getting a new deal not for me to say I'm just thankful the team is trying to right the ship but if it becomes the Bennett will he won't he circus followed by his butt boy Boyd I say not thanks.

coast neither you nor I know what is happening behind the scenes with managers etc.
Bennett has an enviable record of multiple Premierships. Plenty argue he is the best coach of all time.
He has history with us and brought success to us after a long and painful wait.
It's only natural that people will be excited. It would be foolish to pass on the opportunity if it came again.
Mary is young. Would gain plenty learning under Bennett and his time will come if he has what it takes.

Please show me where I have even once said we should give Mary a long term contract! Not once! I was responding to that post that was saying Mary has not achieved any more than Price, anyone who believes that is high. To clarify as you have misquoted me, my position is that if we don't sign Bennett then IMO opinion I would give Mary a 1yr deal instead of signing another coach who has failed at other clubs on a 3yr deal. My reasoning is I don't want to get stuck with another under performing coach for 3yrs and a new coach coming in will want a 3yr term. In the mean time we can make a serious play for one of the top coaches and If Mary happens to be successful then we have that option. Seems logical to me. In terms of patting Mary on the back, I'm in a better position to do that than someone who is opinionated that knocks him as we are 4/5 when we couldn't win a chook raffle. The death riding from a few people in the forum is not of the spirit of a true fan
